Chapter 6 of 10
The Restricted Archives

Vaylek’s vision narrowed, the world compressing to that single, dark shard. He remembered Narlo’s absurd claims of ‘saving’ him from Vondric, the perfectly timed ‘stink bomb’ that obscured their escape, the convenient tripping of Salythe’s warding totem. Every clumsy misstep, every comedic blunder, now replayed in his mind as a terrifyingly precise calculation.
"The Old Scriptorium," Vaylek said, his voice a dry rasp. He thrust the blood-stained towel back at Narlo, who fumbled it with a squeak. “The restricted section. Now.”
Narlo’s eyes, wide and perpetually watery, darted around. “The… the Old Scriptorium? But Vaylek, that’s… that’s for seniors! And they say it’s full of… of *things* that bite! And not just the librarians!” He wrung the towel, a nervous habit.
“Precisely,” Vaylek replied, a cold edge in his tone. He needed to see how Narlo navigated a truly dangerous environment. He needed proof, one way or another.
Narlo groaned, a wheezing sound like a deflating bellows. “But why? We don’t have any research assignments! We’ll get flayed alive, or worse, assigned extra sanitation duty!”
Vaylek simply turned and strode towards the main hall, his pace relentless. Narlo scrambled to follow, muttering frantic prayers under his breath. The journey through the ancient Shroudspire's forgotten corridors was a descent into a deeper gloom. The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of aged parchment and something else, something metallic and faintly acrid – the residue of forgotten enchantments. The ceiling overhead, once ornate, now sagged, revealing rusted support beams and dark, dripping stains.
They reached a heavy, iron-banded door, covered in intricate, warning runes that pulsed with a faint, malevolent light. Narlo gasped, plastering his back against the opposite wall. “They say if you touch that, your fingers turn to ash!”
Vaylek ignored him. He ran a hand over the cold metal, his senses sifting through the layers of protective magic. He cataloged tread triggers, tripwires woven from arcane energy, and a particularly nasty anti-intrusion ward that would compress the air out of a trespasser’s lungs. A standard first-line defense for a secure zone, easily bypassed by anyone with true awareness.
He stepped ahead, his boot hovering inches above a disguised rune etched into the floor. He shifted his weight, rotating his foot slightly, and planted it just to the left of the faint gleam. A barely audible *click* echoed from beneath his sole, harmlessly disarming a sunken plate. Narlo, still pressed against the wall, peered around a pillar. “Wh-what was that?”
“Nothing,” Vaylek said, pushing the heavy door open. It grated on ancient hinges, revealing an interior swallowed by shadows. The repository stretched before them, a labyrinth of towering shelves crammed with scrolls, grimoires, and dusty tomes. The silence within was profound, broken only by the drip of unseen moisture.
Narlo, emboldened slightly by Vaylek’s casual entry, shuffled inside. His foot immediately snagged on a loose floorboard. He yelped, pitching headlong with a flailing windmill of limbs. A barely visible silver thread, a tripwire for a sonic alarm, hung just inches above his head. He completed his fall, somehow landing *between* the thread and a stone trigger that would have triggered a paralyzing gas. His head knocked against a lower shelf, dislodging a thick, leather-bound book. The book tumbled, striking a hidden lever on the wall, which in turn deactivated a row of concealed arrow traps that had been aimed directly at Vaylek’s back.
Narlo groaned, rubbing his head. “Ow! See, Vaylek? This place hates me!”
Vaylek watched, a cold certainty solidifying within him. That wasn't luck. That was a master-class manipulation of spatial probabilities, disguised as clumsiness. Every “accident” was a precise diversion, every trip a calculated evasion. Narlo wasn't just connected to the cult; he *was* its architect, or at least a key player, capable of bending reality to his will.
They moved deeper, Vaylek observing, Narlo ‘stumbling’. A swinging pendulum blade, coated in a glistening neurotoxin, activated from a motion sensor. Narlo ‘tripped’ into a stack of tottering scrolls, sending them crashing into the blade’s path, knocking it harmlessly aside. A floor tile, designed to collapse into a spiked pit, buckled under Narlo’s weight. He shrieked, windmilled, and somehow managed to spin and plant his foot on an adjacent tile, one that Vaylek knew was completely stable. He landed, sprawling, but safe.
“I’m going to die in here, Vaylek! I just know it!” Narlo wailed, picking himself up, covered in dust.
Before Vaylek could respond, a dark form detached itself from the deeper shadows. Vondric. His eyes were bloodshot, his face a mask of furious humiliation. He gripped a heavy, spiked mace, the kind used for training against armored constructs. “Anomaly,” he snarled, his voice a low growl. “You think you can just… walk away from me? From what you did? I’ll teach you about true power, weakling.”
Narlo shrieked and immediately dove behind a massive shelf, leaving Vaylek exposed. Vondric lunged, mace swinging in a wide, crushing arc. The air whistled around the weapon, thick with the intent to maim.
Vaylek didn’t move. He let the mace come, watching the brutal spin of it. At the last possible instant, when the spikes were inches from his face, he sidestepped. The mace tore through the empty air where he had stood. As Vondric stumbled ahead, unbalanced by the missed strike, Vaylek’s hand shot out. He didn’t grab the mace, he gripped Vondric’s wrist, his fingers clamping down with an impossible strength. Vondric cried out, his weapon clattering to the stone floor as his hand went numb.
Vaylek twisted. Vondric’s arm wrenched behind him, a sickening pop echoing in the silent archives. The senior’s face contorted in agony, his knees buckling. Vaylek threw him down, hard, sending him sprawling face-first onto the dusty floor. A cough of pain escaped Vondric’s lips as Vaylek’s boot came down between his shoulder blades. The sheer weight forced Vondric’s head against the cold stone, grinding his nose into the grime.
“You wanted to teach me about power?” Vaylek’s voice was a low, dangerous whisper that cut through Vondric’s whimpers. “This is power, boy. The power to break you without even trying.” He bore down harder, a primal dominance radiating from him. Vondric struggled, pathetic and weak, completely pinned. “Remember this feeling, Vondric. This is where you belong.”
After a long moment, Vaylek lifted his foot, leaving Vondric a broken, humiliated heap. He didn’t spare the senior another glance. His gaze swept the shelves, then settled on the shelf Narlo was hiding behind. The silence stretched, thick with dread. He walked towards the repository exit, the soft *clink* of his boots the only sound. He knew Narlo was watching, calculating.
