The Taste of Salt and Fear

699 words

The wind was a snarling beast, tearing at Mirela’s threadbare cloak, tasting of brine and something colder, something that clawed at the back of her throat. Each step on the slick, shale path sent a fresh throb through her left thigh, where the Vodyan’s warding blade had scored a deep, burning trench. She could feel the damp warmth of her own blood, sticky and sweet beneath the coarse fabric, mingling with the spray from the churning abyss below. Ahead, a skeletal finger of rock jutted from the tumultuous grey-green sea, crowned by the jagged, ancient walls of Orli Hrad. A single, unnervingly long rope bridge swayed between her and its promised sanctuary, a perilous thread stretched over the roaring maw of the ocean. It seemed an uncrossable expanse, yet she dragged herself forward, her lungs burning, the taste of salt and iron her only companions. Behind her, a chorus of high-pitched, guttural yelps sliced through the storm's shriek. The Vodyan hounds. Bred for scent and relentless pursuit, their baying was the soundtrack to her nightmares, drawing ever closer. She stumbled onto the plank where the bridge began, her vision blurring. The wood was raw, splintered, and the ropes woven from thick, dark strands of something stronger than hemp. Her fingers, numb with cold and exhaustion, fumbled for a grip. She had to cross. She *had* to. One of the hounds, a gaunt, grey monstrosity with eyes like chips of amber, burst from the mist, its snout wrinkled back to reveal needle-sharp fangs. It was faster, closer than she’d thought. It launched itself, a blur of muscle and malice, directly at her throat. Mirela didn’t even have time to scream. A shadow, vast and coiling, erupted from beneath the bridge itself, moving with blinding speed. A tremendous impact shook the very air. The hound, mid-leap, was intercepted by something enormous, something not of this world. A sickening crunch echoed over the waves. The Vodyan beast let out a final, pained yelp, cut short as the massive shape tore it in two, one half flung into the churning depths, the other collapsing on the path in a mess of fur and bone. Silence, save for the storm. Then the creature turned. Mirela shrank, pressing herself against the wet rock face, her breath trapped in her chest. This was no man. It was a nightmare given form: a colossal wolf, but warped and broken beyond nature. Its fur was patchy, matted with mud and what looked like old blood. Bones jutted from its shoulders and spine, sharp and angular beneath the skin. Its muzzle was grotesquely elongated, and its claws, longer than her own hand, dripped with the hound's viscera. It stalked towards her, each heavy footfall sending tremors through the ground. Its head dipped, its dark eyes fixing on her. They were feral, ancient, but beneath the raw hunger, Mirela saw it: a flicker of agony, a profound, soul-deep pain that mirrored her own. It was a predator, yes, but a broken one. “No… please,” she whispered, her voice a reedy rasp against the wind. Her fingers fumbled inside her cloak, pulling out the small, wooden bird. It was crudely carved, a raven, its wings outstretched as if in perpetual flight. Joric had made it for her, just before he’d faced Lord Voron’s guards, buying her precious moments to run. She held it out, her hand trembling. “Sanctuary,” she breathed, the word torn from her lips by the gale, yet clear, desperate. “I seek… sanctuary.” The creature’s immense head tilted, its gaze unwavering. The pain in its eyes seemed to deepen, a silent battle raging within its monstrous form. Its snout twitched, catching the scent of the blood-soaked wood, the salt, and the fear clinging to Mirela. It took another step, then another, until its hot breath, smelling of damp earth and raw meat, ghosted over her face. She closed her eyes, bracing for the inevitable. Then, a voice, calm and authoritative, cut through the storm from the fortress gate. It was a woman’s voice, ringing with an ancient power that commanded even the wind to listen. “Bring the girl inside, Borin. Let us see what the storm has brought us.”
