Chapter 17 of 17
Chapter 16: The Last Way Out
1.1k words
For the first time since entering Blackthorn Hotel, the remaining friends stepped away from Room 13 without feeling like they were being pulled back toward it. The hallway outside was still dark, still cold, and still filled with the same strange silence that had followed them since the beginning, but something had changed. The hotel no longer felt like a place they were exploring. It felt like a place that was losing control. The walls were still shifting, the shadows still moved in the corners of their eyes, and the whispers still travelled through the empty rooms, but the voices no longer had the same power over them.
They understood the trick now.
The hotel wanted them to chase answers.
It wanted them to follow sounds.
It wanted them to believe that if they searched long enough, they would find their missing friends waiting somewhere inside.
But they finally accepted the truth.
Some mysteries were not meant to be solved.
Some doors were not meant to be opened.
Mia held onto Elena’s diary tightly as they moved through the hallway. It was the last piece of evidence they had, the only thing connecting them to the truth of Blackthorn Hotel. She wanted to keep it. She wanted to take it with them and show the world what had happened there. But a small part of her wondered if carrying the diary away meant carrying a piece of the hotel with them.
Alex noticed her hesitation.
“We need to leave it.”
Mia looked at him.
“What?”
He looked back at the diary.
“Maybe that’s what Elena meant. Maybe the hotel keeps secrets alive because people keep carrying them.”
Nobody argued.
For the first time, they were not thinking about proving what happened.
They were thinking about surviving.
They moved quickly through the hallways, following the old map they had found beneath the hotel. The map showed a hidden passage leading toward the original entrance, a route that had been sealed for years. They hoped that if they could reach it, they might finally escape.
But Blackthorn Hotel was not going to let them leave easily.
As they walked through the lower floors, the building began changing more violently than before. Doors slammed open and closed by themselves. The lights flickered rapidly, creating flashes of darkness and light that made it difficult to tell what was real. The walls seemed to shift around them, stretching the hallway longer every time they looked away.
Emma held onto Lily’s arm as they moved.
“What if we can’t get out?”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone had thought about that possibility.
They had entered as seven.
Now only four remained.
And every person they lost had been taken because they believed they were close to finding the truth.
When they reached the old entrance hall, they stopped.
The large doors that had disappeared earlier were back.
For a moment, nobody moved.
After everything they had experienced, seeing a possible exit felt almost impossible to trust. It looked too easy. Too normal.
Alex stepped closer, but Mia stopped him.
“Wait.”
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed toward the doors.
There was something wrong.
The outside view through the glass was not the forest surrounding the hotel.
It was the hallway.
The same hallway they were standing in.
The doors were showing them another part of the hotel.
An illusion.
The hotel was trying to make them believe they were leaving.
Lily quickly opened Elena’s diary again, searching through the pages one final time. Then she found something written near the edge of the paper, something that looked like it had been added later.
A final instruction.
“The hotel can create paths, but it cannot create what it does not understand.”
Noah would have understood immediately.
But Noah was gone.
Everyone became quiet.
They thought about all the people they had lost.
Daniel’s curiosity.
Ryan’s courage.
Noah’s logic.
Emma’s determination.
Lily’s search for answers.
Every person had something the hotel wanted.
Something it could learn from.
And that was why they had to stop giving it anything.
They stopped looking for hidden doors.
They stopped reacting to voices.
They stopped following the hotel’s games.
Instead, they closed their eyes and focused only on one thing.
The real exit.
Not the one the hotel showed them.
The one they remembered.
Slowly, the false doors began disappearing.
The illusion faded.
The entrance hall returned to the way it truly was.
And behind the cracked wooden frame was a small damaged passage that had been hidden behind the walls.
The real way out.
Everyone rushed toward it, but before they reached the passage, a voice echoed through the entire hotel.
A voice they all recognized.
Daniel.
“Wait…”
Everyone stopped.
For a moment, hope returned.
Maybe Daniel was alive.
Maybe they had been wrong.
Maybe they could still save everyone.
But Mia remembered Elena’s warning.
The voice was never the person.
The voice was what the hotel learned from them.
Alex closed his eyes.
“No.”
The voice changed.
It became Ryan.
Then Noah.
Then Elena.
Then all of them together.
“Don’t leave us.”
The words echoed through the entrance hall.
But the remaining friends kept moving.
Because they finally understood.
The hotel was not asking them to save their friends.
It was asking them to stay.
They reached the hidden passage and climbed through the narrow space beneath the hotel. Behind them, Blackthorn Hotel shook violently, as if the entire building was reacting to their escape. Dust fell from the ceiling, the walls cracked, and the whispers became louder than ever before.
But they did not turn around.
They kept moving forward.
Because sometimes surviving meant accepting that you could not fix everything.
Sometimes leaving meant letting go of the things that wanted to pull you back.
After what felt like hours, they saw something they had not seen in what felt like forever.
Moonlight.
Real moonlight.
They reached the outside.
The forest surrounded them.
The cold night air touched their faces.
And behind them stood Blackthorn Hotel.
Silent.
Still.
Watching.
The four friends stood there, exhausted and unable to believe they had actually escaped. They had entered Blackthorn Hotel looking for a mystery, but they left carrying something much heavier. They carried the memories of the people who never came back. They carried the truth about Room 13. They carried the knowledge that some places were dangerous not because they were abandoned, but because something inside them was still awake.
Before they walked away, Mia looked back at the hotel one last time.
A single light appeared in one of the upper windows.
The window of Room 13.
Then, slowly…
The light disappeared.
