Chapter 9 of 10
Victory in Defeat

Ruan Tian kicked the brass gates of the Grand Zenith Arena clean off their hinges.
The heavy leaves screeched across polished basalt, carving grooves into the stone and rebounding against the grandstands. Ten thousand spectators fell dead silent. Below them, on the sunken stage, Ling Meiying stood with her rapier poised an inch from the collarbone of her opponent, a hulking disciple named Han Geng from the Iron Pillar Sect. Frost clung to the warrior's chestplate. One more thrust and she would cast him from the circle, claiming the grand prize.
Jin An stumbled through the wreckage behind Ruan Tian, his lungs burning, his robes soaked in cold sweat. Every pair of eyes in the amphitheater pivoted toward them. His knees turned to bean curd. His voice vanished behind a wall of sheer panic.
"Falt—halt!" Jin An tried to croak, but it came out as a strangled squeak.
From the high balcony above the judges' dais, Elder Bai rose smoothly to his feet. The old man’s benevolent smile was back in place, radiant and serene, though his knuckles turned white against the balustrade. "Young Master Ruan. Guest Jin. The final bout is sacred. Even the Crimson Sun Pavilion cannot disrupt the climax of our hundred-year rite."
Ling Meiying did not lower her blade. Her skin had turned translucent, veined with sickly indigo lines beneath the cheekbones where the plague gnawed her meridians. She cast a scathing glance over her shoulder. "Jin An? What foolishness is this? He is beaten. The match is mine."
Jin An looked down at the platform. Above the dais, suspended in a cage of silver runes, hung the Sunstone of Renewal. It spun lazily, its golden surface pulsing like an infected heart, sending thin, invisible threads of siphon-qi toward the arena floor. The threads were keyed directly to the ice-venom twisting in her core.
If she won, if she raised her hands to accept it, the trap would spring.
His tongue felt thick as mutton. Every instinct screamed at him to curl into a ball behind Ruan Tian's back. But the sight of those violet streaks along her neck—the exact mark that had killed another soul eight hundred years ago under his useless hands—tore through the paralysis.
"Reverse the Nine-Needle Gate!" Jin An yelled, his voice cracking into an ugly shriek that echoed across the stone bowl. "The jade core has a hollow stem! It’s a parasitic siphon! Three measures of black bile in the well! The stone feeds on the sovereign pulse, Meiying! Your marrow is the wick!"
To the crowd, it was the raving gibberish of a backwater buffoon. Chuckles rippled across the lower tiers.
Ling Meiying froze.
Her rapier tip wavered. Her gaze flicked from Jin An to the glowing artifact above the ring, then down to her own trembling left hand. *The marrow is the wick.* She had read the forbidden diagnostic treatise in the hidden archives. She knew the ancient terms for blood-curse catalysts. The sudden realization hit her like an icy plunge: every bizarre mishap, the ruined cauldrons, the chaotic vacuum in the infirmary—he had not been fumbling. He had been suppressing her necrotic channels the entire time.
She took half a step backward, lowering her weapon.
"Impudent cur!" Elder Bai’s roar shattered the air. The facade cracked, revealing the snarling fanatic underneath. He raised a jade staff, slamming its butt into the dais flagstones. "The rites are sealed! No one leaves the circle!"
A wall of obsidian light shot up around the circumference of the stage, sealing Ling Meiying and Han Geng inside. From the high dais, Elder Bai’s spiritual pressure descended like a falling mountain, forcing the spectators back into their seats. "The contest must have its victor! Han Geng, rise and finish her! The artifact demands its rightful master!"
Han Geng shook off the frost, his gaze turning bloodshot as Bai's command echoed in his mind. He hoisted his iron club, stepping toward the hesitating girl.
Jin An pawed through his sleeves in frantic terror. His fingers brushed against the leftover parchment from his failed diagnostic array—a jagged slip of yellow mulberry paper loaded with volatile cinnabar and an inverted spirit-drawing matrix. He couldn't fight Han Geng. He couldn't shatter the dark wall. And if Ling Meiying surrendered, Bai would simply force the stone upon her by sect decree.
There was only one way to break the seal's targeting matrix.
Someone else had to win.
"Ruan Tian!" Jin An hissed, his pulse thudding behind his temples. "Look impressive! Right now!"
"I am always impressive!" Ruan Tian bellowed, drawing his dual blazing sabers with theatrical flourish. "Behold, elder wretch! The scion of the Crimson Sun shall not suffer your treachery! Face my peerless Solar Phoenix Strike!"
Ruan Tian leaped onto the top rail of the partition, unleashing a brilliant, blinding cloud of crimson sparks and theatrical fireballs that engulfed the upper tier of the shield, drawing every eye and every guard's crossbow toward him.
Under cover of the blaze, Jin An tripped over his own hem, fell forward on his face, and flung the yellow paper slip with a desperate snap of his wrist.
The talisman didn't fly straight. It fluttered like an injured sparrow, bobbing erratically through a microscopic gap in the ward's lower joint. It struck Han Geng squarely on the small of his back, right over his Gate of Vitality.
The effect was instantaneous and horrific.
The inverted diagnostic matrix did not siphon Han Geng's power; it uncapped his energy reservoir like pulling a plug from a pressurized dam. The disciple's eyes bulged until the whites turned scarlet. His muscles tore his sleeves into confetti as his frame ballooned with uncontrolled, violently surging vitality.
"Graaaagh!" Han Geng howled, his club swinging on pure reflex as his body tried to bleed off the catastrophic tidal wave of internal heat.
The blow missed Ling Meiying’s head by a finger's width, but the shockwave of displaced air hit her chest like a battering ram. Weakened by the plague and caught entirely off balance, she was lifted off her feet. She sailed backward through the air, breached the edge of the painted ring, and crashed into the soft sand of the out-of-bounds trough.
A heavy bell tolled from the scoring tower.
"Ring out!" the chief arbiter screamed in disbelief. "Ling Meiying has crossed the boundary! The victor... the champion of the Centennial Starfall match is Han Geng of the Iron Pillar Order!"
Han Geng stood alone in the center of the stage, panting, weeping from the sheer agony of overcharged channels, his club twitching in his mammoth fist.
High above, Elder Bai's face went purple with fury. "No! It was tuned for—"
Before Bai could complete the counter-seal, the silver cage around the prize shattered. The golden orb flared with blinding, malevolent radiance. It did not bestow enlightenment. It did not drop gently into the victor's hands. It plunged like a raptor, slamming directly into Han Geng's chest, sinking into his flesh as dark tendrils wrapped around his ribcage and began drinking his surging life-force down to the bone.
