Chapter 8 of 10
An Alliance of Fools and Geniuses

The purplish hue in Elder Bai’s private study deepened, the air growing thick and cold as the shadowy horror behind the dark frame seemed to pulse with a predatory hunger. Jin An, a prisoner in his own body, could only watch, trapped behind locked jaws. Ling Meiying, his unwitting target, was walking towards a terrible fate, and he was powerless. The paralyzing seal, invisible yet absolute, rooted him to the spot. Elder Bai, reveling in his triumph, turned his back, his attention consumed by the expanding darkness in the mirror, his words a low, reverent drone directed at the ethereal horror.
Suddenly, a faint *thwip* sounded from the open window, barely audible above the rising hum of the monstrosity. Elder Bai, engrossed, didn’t register it. But Jin An, his senses heightened by panic, saw a flash of crimson silk flutter just outside the frame, then vanish. A moment later, a pebble, no larger than a candied jujube, arced through the air with surprising force, striking Elder Bai’s ear with a soft *thunk*. The Elder flinched, his head whipping around, a scowl marring his face.
“Who dares—” he began, his voice laced with venom. But before he could finish, another pebble, aimed with unsettling precision, struck his forehead. And another. And another. They came in rapid succession, a mocking barrage, each impact trivial yet infuriating. Elder Bai roared, Qi flaring around him as he erected a defensive barrier, his concentration shattered. The purple light in the glass flickered, the beast’s expansion momentarily stalled.
“Show yourself, coward!” Elder Bai bellowed, scanning the shadows. From behind a towering pile of scrolls near the window, a figure emerged, resplendent in crimson and gold, his arm still cocked, a triumphant smirk on his face. It was Ruan Tian.
“Coward?” Ruan Tian scoffed, stepping fully into the dim light. “Is that how you address the future champion of the Luminous Empire, you dusty old crow? I, Young Master Ruan Tian, have graced your humble abode with my presence, and you accuse *me* of cowardice? Preposterous!” He flicked another pebble, which ricocheted off Elder Bai’s barrier with a spark. “And here I thought I’d catch you practicing your calligraphy, not… whatever this murky business is.”
Elder Bai’s face twisted with fury. “Ruan Tian! What in the Three Realms are you doing here?”
Ruan Tian struck an extravagant pose, his chest puffed out. “Observing, naturally! For weeks, you’ve been sneaking around, casting furtive glances at that village bumpkin, Jin An. My intuition, sharp as a Celestial Blade, told me something was amiss! I suspected you were attempting to poach my future rival, possibly even poisoning his tea to weaken him for the bouts. My paranoia, it turns out, was divinely inspired!” He gestured grandly at Jin An, still rigid and unmoving. “Look at him! What nefarious spell have you cast upon my esteemed competitor?”
Elder Bai’s eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint within them. “You little nuisance. This does not concern you. Leave at once, or face the consequences.”
“Consequences?” Ruan Tian laughed, an overblown sound that grated on Jin An’s ears. “Threats? To me? I am Ruan Tian! I fear no one, especially not a doddering old schemer!” With a flourish, he produced a small, ornate blade from his sleeve. “Perhaps a little… *persuasion*… is in order.” He aimed the blade at Elder Bai, not to throw, but to ostentatiously brandish. As he did so, his arm brushed against a small, concealed hook on the wall, dislodging a scroll that tumbled down, revealing the faint outline of a shimmering seal etched into the stone behind it. It was the power source for Jin An’s paralysis.
Before Elder Bai could react to the exposed seal, Ruan Tian, still caught up in his grandstanding, tripped on his own flowing robes. He flailed, his hand instinctively reaching out, not for balance, but to catch his falling knife. His fingers, by sheer dumb luck, brushed across the shimmering seal, inadvertently disrupting its flow. A faint *crack* echoed, and a sharp shock coursed through Jin An’s body. The paralyzing seal shattered.
Jin An gasped, air rushing into his lungs, his muscles screaming with delayed agony. He staggered forward, nearly collapsing, but caught himself, his pupils dilated and wild. He could move!
Elder Bai whirled, his face a mask of rage. “You fool! You meddling idiot!” He lunged towards Jin An, his Qi surging with murderous intent.
“Stop!” Jin An croaked, the word tearing from his unused throat. The sound was ragged, desperate, but it cut through the room. Elder Bai hesitated, surprised by the sudden voice from his formerly mute captive.
“Ruan Tian, listen to me!” Jin An's words tumbled out, forced and clumsy, but imbued with a desperate urgency he hadn’t thought himself capable of. “Elder Bai serves a malevolent fiend. The Sunstone of Renewal, the grand prize of the competition, is not what it seems. It’s a soul-trap, designed to consume the victor’s cultivated core to unleash this… this thing!” He gestured wildly at the dark frame, his social anxiety momentarily overridden by overwhelming terror and the need to save Ling Meiying. “He intends to sacrifice Ling Meiying’s soul, because her plague, the Blood Blight, makes her a perfect conduit for its release! He accelerated her illness, he framed me, he… he tricked us all!”
Ruan Tian, who had finally regained his footing, stood frozen, his dramatic pose forgotten. His jaw hung slack. He blinked once, then twice, turning his bewildered gaze from Jin An to Elder Bai, then to the pulsing dark frame, and back to Jin An. The sheer absurdity of the accusation, the wild, frantic delivery, clashed violently with the sudden stillness in the room and the undeniable, malevolent aura radiating from the glass.
“A… a soul-trap?” Ruan Tian repeated, his voice barely a murmur. “The Centennial Starfall Trials… a *scam*? My glorious path to proving my superiority… a mere ruse to feed some shadowy… *thing*?” His gaze, usually alight with arrogant pride, now held a dawning horror. The world, as he knew it, was crumbling. His rival, the clumsy village idiot, was not a rival, but a… a hero, screaming the truth! The betrayal, the manipulation, the sheer audacity of it all was an insult to his very being.
Elder Bai, regaining his composure, sneered. “Do not listen to this madman, Ruan Tian! He is delirious, poisoned by his own failures. He seeks to sow discord, to prevent Ling Meiying from claiming her destiny!”
“Lies!” Jin An shouted, pushing past his crippling fear. “He wants her soul! He wants to unleash that fiend! Ling Meiying is in danger, right now!”
Ruan Tian’s gaze snapped to Elder Bai. The Elder’s calm denial, contrasted with Jin An’s frantic honesty, suddenly seemed… too calm. The glint in Elder Bai’s eyes was not benevolent wisdom, but cold calculation. And the presence behind the pane… it was undeniably dark, not majestic. His internal monologue, usually a symphony of self-aggrandizement, ground to an absolute halt. This was not a petty rivalry; this was a cosmic deception. His world tilted on its axis. His *arch-rival* was trying to *save* everyone.
Then, a profound, almost primal shift occurred within Ruan Tian. The humiliation, the disbelief, the sheer outrage at being played for a fool, coalesced into a fierce, righteous anger. His face, usually prone to haughty expressions of superiority, now settled into a look of cold, hard fury. No one, absolutely no one, made a fool of Ruan Tian. Especially not some insidious old fraud. And if this… this *Jin An*… was truly fighting a hidden evil, then it was Ruan Tian’s sacred duty to fight alongside him, to reclaim his honor, and, in doing so, to prove his own peerless greatness in a real struggle.
He slowly drew himself up, his eyes now blazing with a renewed, yet profoundly altered, resolve. “Elder Bai,” he said, his voice low and dangerous, stripped of its usual theatrics. “You have made a grave mistake. You have insulted me. You have threatened my… my *rival*. And you have attempted to make a mockery of the Centennial Starfall Tournament, an event sacred to the Luminous Empire.” He pointed his ornamental blade at the Elder, its tip unwavering. “Such treachery cannot stand. I, Young Master Ruan Tian, stand with Jin An! And together, we shall expose your villainy and crush your insidious plot!”
Jin An stared at Ruan Tian, utterly dumbfounded. This was not how he imagined an alliance, or any interaction with the Young Master, would ever unfold. But there was a steely conviction in Ruan Tian’s eyes, a genuine fury that transcended his usual posturing. For the first time, Jin An felt a flicker of something akin to hope, however absurd. An unlikely, utterly pompous ally.
“The final trial,” Jin An urged, his voice still hoarse, “it’s happening now. Ling Meiying is fighting. We have to stop her from winning.”
Ruan Tian stared in disbelief. “Not win? But… but that’s the point of the contests!”
“It’s a trap, Ruan Tian! Her winning activates it!” Jin An grabbed the Young Master’s crimson sleeve, pulling him towards the door. “We need to get to the Grand Zenith Arena. Now!”
Ruan Tian, uncharacteristically muted, nodded with an unyielding scowl. He turned to Elder Bai, who stood, mouth agape, utterly blindsided by the turn of events. “You,” Ruan Tian declared, a final, chilling note in his voice, “will answer for your crimes.” With that, he burst through the door, Jin An stumbling after him, their footsteps echoing down the deserted corridor as the ominous purple light behind them intensified. The Grand Zenith Arena, where the final duel was already underway, suddenly felt like the most dangerous place in the entire Luminous Empire. Ling Meiying, weakened but fierce, faced her opponent, unaware that victory would mean her complete and utter destruction.
