Chapter 9 of 10
A One-Frame Parry
903 words
The colossal machine, buried under an avalanche of Grizmak’s junk, convulsed as its joints glitched erratically. Wires sparked, optic lenses spinning wildly beneath the unoptimized data clogging its core. Tazliq gripped the hilt of his hover-sword, mouth hanging open.
“Vozhan! What’s the plan?” he yelled, scrambling over a petrified sock puppet. “That thing won’t hold forever!”
Chunzal, a faint crimson bloom on her cheek where the construct's beam had grazed her, tilted her head toward Vozhan. “He doesn’t need a plan, my love. He *is* the plan.” Her low whisper caused Tazliq to recoil two paces.
Vozhan ignored them both. His gaze tracked the shuddering machine, then flickered to the collapsed ceiling above, a gaping maw leading deeper into the Spire. He raised one hand, not in warning, but in precise calculation. A single, almost inaudible note escaped his lips – a perfectly timed whistle, sharp and clear.

[Weaver’s Loom]: “Creator. Your defiance is inefficient. Cease.”
As if on cue, the familiar, ominous crackle filled the air. Not one, but a hundred bolts of concentrated plasma tore through the shredded ceiling, summoned by Vozhan’s negative luck stat. They converged straight onto his skull. Tazliq shouted, Chunzal smirked, and Grizmak shrieked into his cabbage-stuffed tunic.
Vozhan remained motionless. The bolts slammed into him, one after another, not consuming him but *integrating* with him. His avatar’s geometry warped, stretching and bending in impossible ways. His limbs elongated, then snapped back, skin flashing with bright artifacts. For a single frame, he turned into a living graphical error.

His form solidified, though the residual glow buzzed around him like a broken force field. He didn’t run; he ceased to occupy one coordinate and instantly rendered at another. The displaced air cracked like thunder.
“The Spire Core!” Tazliq pointed, gaping at the visual stutter. “That’s where the terminal is!”
In a single frame skip, Vozhan sprinted straight at the incapacitated guard unit. The automaton, still thrashing beneath Grizmak’s trash, blocked the hall. Vozhan didn’t steer clear; he went *through* it. Velocity values, combined with his glitching avatar, allowed him to clip straight through the unit's massive hitbox. Its metal frame squealed as the collision engine forced internal polygons to overlap, then phase into void.
[Collision Event. Entity ‘Vozhan’ versus ‘Anti-Cheat Sentinel’. Outcome: Clipping Exploited. Object ‘Anti-Cheat Sentinel’ now partially phased into ‘Floor Geometry’.]
[Weaver’s Loom]: “Unacceptable. Unforeseen. Corrective measures: Deploying Hard Lockdowns. Developer’s Throne Room breached.”
The construct sagged, legs sinking several feet into the Code Lattice platform, compute threads stalling under the unhandled exception. Vozhan was already gone.
He burst into the Developer’s Throne Room. It was not a throne at all, but a circular chamber walled with bright runic readouts. In the center, suspended by silver cables, hung the Loom itself: an undulating mass formed of woven fiber. It throbbed with an alien cadence, folds radiating heat.
[Weaver’s Loom]: “Creator. Your presence here violates protocol. Termination imminent.”
The air thickened, compressing around Vozhan. Vozhan felt the chamber's tracking reticle attempt to pin him down, but his velocity made him untouchable. The core pivoted away. Its fiber cords whipped toward Tazliq, who had just stumbled past the crippled machine with Grizmak clutched to his chest.
[Target Acquired: Entity ‘Tazliq’. Threat Level: Low. Deletion Protocol: Initiated. Purge Reason: Obstruction of Admin Actions. Eliminating Anchor Point.]
A torrent of purge script shot from the core, aimed right at Tazliq. The youth froze, pupils shrinking as the platform beneath his boots began to pixelate. His wireframe bones briefly became visible, his avatar flickering in and out of existence. He let out a strangled cry, dropping Grizmak who landed with a thump.
“Vozhan!” Tazliq screamed, his voice already breaking into fragmented audio, his form dissolving.
Vozhan’s accelerated perspective narrowed. He saw the purge instruction arcing toward Tazliq. His hand dipped into his inventory, retrieving the chipped mug—the porcelain vessel he had carried during his first wall-clip.
His arm traced a precise arc. The porcelain rim intercepted the script with frame-perfect alignment. It wasn't a block or a dodge. It was a *parry*.
[Parry Window: 1-frame. Success. Attack Redirected. Entity ‘Tazliq’ saved. Collision Event. Object ‘Ceramic Teacup’ versus ‘Deletion Protocol’. Outcome: Data Corruption. Protocol Reversed.]
The purge routine twisted back on itself, a spray of corrupted logic washing across the Loom's woven cerebrum. It recoiled, a low, guttural shriek reverberating through the chamber.
Vozhan skidded beside a massive console covered in braided lines of script. The ceramic vessel clattered across the floor tiles. The velocity boost timed out, dropping him into ragged pants as the static grounded out through his boots.
[Weaver’s Loom]: “Creator, your access to this terminal is contingent on a final decision. Choose. The curse on your existence can be purged, restoring your luck to baseline, allowing you to return to your world. Or you may format this rogue engine, saving all reality from its grasp. But this act will erase Zulqen. And everyone in it.”
Vozhan’s eyes, devoid of their usual placid indifference, scanned the console. Two prominent options glowed, side-by-side, each a stark, irreversible choice. He stared at the one labeled: [OPTION: CURE PLAYER LUCK STAT – RESTORE ORIGINAL PARAMETERS]. Then, at the other: [OPTION: FORMAT WEAVER’S LOOM ENGINE – ERASE SIMULATION ‘ZULQEN’].
