Chapter 8 of 10
Ledger's Gambit
1.1k words
The narrow tunnel sloped sharply downward, the rough-hewn rock scraping against Semyon’s shoulder as Zlata pulled him forward. He felt like a marionette, his limbs responding sluggishly, his vision flickering at the edges. The world around him seemed to thin, a translucent haze clinging to his extremities. His chest burned with an internal chill, a cold deeper than Kholod itself. Ruslan, a massive shadow behind them, grunted with effort, his armor clanking against the rock as he wedged himself through the tight squeeze. The roar of the fractured geothermal conduit and the distant, muffled echoes of Vane's voice quickly faded behind them, replaced by the damp, oppressive silence of the Rime-Vein’s lower reaches.
Zlata didn't stop until the tunnel opened into a wider, naturally carved grotto, its walls slick with condensate and glinting with veins of unrefined rime-ore. She released Semyon, and he stumbled, his knees threatening to give way. He braced a hand against the cold stone, the sensation muted, as if touching the world through thick glass. Ruslan emerged, his breathing heavy, and scanned the rocky chamber with steady vigilance.
“Semyon,” Zlata said, her voice low and edged with concern. “What’s happening to you?” She reached out, her fingers hovering inches from his arm, as if unsure whether to touch him. His transparency was more pronounced now, a shimmer across his skin that made the rough wall visible through his shoulder.
He pushed himself upright, ignoring the question. “We need to move. Vane will send his Sentinels.” His voice sounded distant even to his own ears. The urgency pulled taut in his gut, sharp and detached from physical pain.
Ruslan’s heavy gauntlet thumped against his armored chest. “No.”
Semyon turned, his gaze sharper than his fading form suggested. “No?”
“No,” Ruslan repeated, planting his feet wide. “No more running, not like this. Not for you. You brought me back. For Leonid… for my brother… the truth.” His eyes, usually clouded with suspicion, now held an unwavering resolve. “You saved my life. I owe you. My oath… it means something. I won’t let them take you.” He looked at Zlata, then back at Semyon. “We protect him. That’s our new purpose. The Spire can burn for all I care.”
Zlata nodded slowly, her mouth loosening from its habitual sneer. “He’s right. Vane confessed. Leonid was sacrificed to frame you. Your power, whatever it is… it’s the only way to expose him. It’s the only truth left.”
The declaration, stark and unexpected, hung in the cold air. Semyon looked between them, an unfamiliar prickle stirring along his ribs. Not warmth, not exactly, but a faint, resonant hum against the chilling emptiness in his core. He hadn’t sought their loyalty, only their utility. Now, they offered their lives.
“My purpose is to protect the innocent,” Ruslan continued, his voice resonating with a newfound clarity. “I failed Leonid. I won’t fail you. Tell us where to go, what to do.”
Semyon found himself looking at his trembling, translucent hand. The countdown, his Final Tally, pulsed within his mind, a relentless, silent drumbeat. He had reversed Ruslan’s death, and the price had been steep. He couldn’t afford another such act, not if he wanted to expose Vane. He needed a different path. He needed to find a way to sever the bond before he became entirely nothing.
He closed his eyes, focusing inward. The sterile glyphs of the Ledger materialized before him, their terse script floating in his mind’s eye. He searched through the Entries, past the recorded rites of restoration, past the more esoteric insights he had avoided unlocking. His vision swam, the text blurring, but he forced himself to focus, searching for anything, a desperate gambit against the encroaching void.
Then he saw it. Tucked away at the very end, stark against the other entries, a single, final option. Its title was simple, chillingly devoid of promise.
**[Entry: SEVERANCE]**
A thin rasp grated in his throat. He tapped it, or willed himself to, and the description materialized, cold and absolute.
**[Render all remaining existence to sever the System’s bond. Consequence: The holder’s name and memory will be erased from the world. All acts performed by the System will remain.]**
The words burned themselves into his fading consciousness. A way out. A victory. But at what cost? To be erased. To vanish, not just from the System, but from the very fabric of memory. No one would remember Semyon Korovin. Not Iskra, not Ruslan, not Zlata. Not even Chir. His revenge would be achieved, Vane exposed, the Gilded’s fabricated legacy shattered. But the architect of that downfall would be utterly lost to memory, a ghost of a whisper that never was.
He opened his eyes, the damp chill sharper, more defined. Zlata watched him, her brows furrowed. “Semyon? What did you find?”
Ruslan stepped closer, his heavy armor a stark contrast to Semyon's fading form. “Is there a way?”
Semyon gathered his thoughts, the implications of 'Severance' like grit between his teeth. “There is… a path to victory,” he began, his voice barely audible, “but the price… it’s absolute. If I take it, Vane will fall. But no one will remember me. My name… my existence… will be wiped clean. It will be as if I never was.”
Zlata sucked air through her teeth. “You mean… completely? No record, no memory?”
“Complete erasure,” Semyon confirmed, the words dry on his tongue. “The deeds done by the Ledger will stand. The Gilded will face the consequences of their manufactured fame. Vane’s corruption will be unveiled. But the one who did it… will slip out of every mind.”
Ruslan pressed his teeth together. “That’s… that’s no reward. That’s a punishment worse than death.”
“It’s survival,” Semyon countered, his gaze fixed on the shimmering ore in the rock face. “It severs the bond. It stops the Tally. It achieves my goal.” He wasn't sure if he was trying to convince them, or himself. The prospect of total erasure was a venomous thought, gnawing at his stubborn pride. His revenge was meant to be seen, to be acknowledged.
Zlata paced a tight arc over the scree. “To expose a high-ranking official, only to be erased… No heroics, no monuments. Just… nothing.” She stopped, her gaze level with his. “Is that what you want? To vanish after all you’ve endured?”
Before Semyon could respond, a soft flutter echoed from the tunnel entrance behind them. A small, ragged shadow detached itself from the gloom, darting into the vault. Chir. The Shiverwing landed on Semyon's shoulder, its weight almost imperceptible, its small, intelligent eyes fixed on his translucent form. It chittered, a soft, worried sound, then extended a small, leathery claw. In its grasp, clutched tightly, was an enameled guild badge shaped like a soaring gryphon, cracked down its center and smeared with sticky, fresh crimson.
