Chapter 1 of 10

An Unpayable Debt

The tunnel air, already biting with the chill of the Rime-Vein, fractured with a guttural roar. Ice crystals, thick as dagger points, shrieked as they carved through the frozen rock overhead, showering the company in a hail of shimmering debris. Semyon Korovin, hunched by a jagged ice pillar, felt the familiar vibration in his teeth before he saw the source: an Alpha Frost-fiend, a hulking mass of blued rime and raw sorrow, its clawed forelimbs tearing at the passage entrance. “Form up! Ruslan, bulwark! Zlata, suppress!” Iskra Volova’s command was sharp, cutting through the din. The celebrated hunters moved with practiced coordination. Ruslan, a walking bastion of steel and hardened leather, planted his immense iron barrier, the gilded eagle-lion crest glinting even in the dim light. Zlata, her silver hair whipping, began to chant, frost energy coalescing between her palms. But the Alpha Frost-fiend was too fast, too enraged. It launched itself, a terrifying blur of glacial force, not at Ruslan’s impenetrable defense, but at Iskra. Its horned skull, crusted with ancient ice, struck her mid-chest. There was a sickening crunch, a sound that cut through the battle cries, followed by the wet thud of her body impacting the frozen floor. The spear of ice that had adorned the fiend’s brow now protruded from Iskra’s chest, a grotesque, crystalline adornment. Silence, brief and absolute, fell over the Rime-Vein. Ruslan’s guard dropped a fraction. Zlata’s incantation died on her lips, her eyes fixed on her fallen leader. The Alpha Frost-fiend paused, its multi-faceted eyes glowing with malevolent triumph. “Semyon! Tend to her! *Now!*” Zlata’s voice, usually a whipcrack of cynicism, was ragged, primal. “Her body! Don’t just stand there, you Corpse-Tender! Do your damned duty!” Semyon did not flinch. His gaze, colder than the surrounding ice, had already assessed the scene. Iskra Volova, the radiant leader, lay broken. Her breath had ceased before she touched the ground. A single, crystalline teardrop, dislodged by the impact, rolled from her eye, freezing solid on her pale cheek. Her ambition, her charisma, her very *presence* had extinguished like a candle in a gale. He pushed himself from the ice pillar, his movements deliberate, unhurried. The frantic clash of Ruslan engaging the Frost-fiend, the roar of magic, the frantic cries — all of it was distant, muffled. His focus narrowed to the still form on the floor. He knelt beside her, his fingers, slender and precise, brushing against the hilt of the ice-spear. The frozen spire was frigid against his skin. He closed his eyes for a fraction of a second. Within the desolate landscape of his mind, the [Ledger of Last Rites] shimmered, its emotionless script appearing before him. [PROMPT DETECTED: UNTIMELY DEMISE. SUBJECT: ISKRA VOLOVA. STATUS: DECEASED.] [INITIATING SOJOURNER’S GRACE. COST: MINOR EXISTENCE TALLY CONSUMPTION.] A bitter tang, like frostbite on the soul, bloomed in his chest. A sliver of his dwindling self, a tiny spark of his very being, was consumed. It was a price he paid with every manipulation, every twist of fate he orchestrated from the shadows. [SOJOURNER’S GRACE ACTIVATED. REVERSAL INITIATED.] He opened his eyes. The chaos of the battle raged around him. Zlata was screaming something incoherent, her hands glowing with elemental fury as she launched shards of ice at the fiend. Ruslan bellowed, his braced metal taking the brunt of a devastating charge. Semyon ignored them all. He placed his palm flat against Iskra’s chest, directly over the shard of ice. A harsh burst of pale needle-cold coursed from his hand into her body. It was not a gentle warmth, but a violent, invasive energy, like lightning striking a frozen lake. The spear of ice, still embedded, began to retract, melting into vapor with an audible hiss. Iskra’s eyes, glazed and lifeless moments before, snapped open. Her body convulsed, a gasp tearing from her throat as she arched backward, propelled by the raw, surging power Semyon had channeled. She landed on her feet, unsteady, disoriented. Her hand flew to her chest, where a faint, shimmering scar remained, fading even as she watched. Her breath came in ragged, disbelieving gasps. Her gaze darted from her own body to Semyon, then to the monstrous Frost-fiend currently battering Ruslan. “What… what in Kholod’s name?” she choked out, her voice still weak. Semyon did not answer. He merely plucked a small, irregular stone from the floor, worn smooth by the ceaseless flow of glacial water, and tossed it. It arced through the air, clattering against a specific point on the stone wall, a section of ice that appeared solid but held a barely perceptible fissure, a stress point he had noted on their way in. The sound was barely audible above the din of battle, yet it resonated. Iskra’s eyes, now sharp, followed the trajectory of the stone. Her gaze fixed on the fissure. A flicker of understanding, an intuitive spark that had always been her true strength, ignited. She raised her hand, ignoring the lingering disorientation, and a jet of pure, concentrated frost energy erupted from her palm, not at the Frost-fiend, but at the weakened ice ceiling directly above it. The cavern groaned. A spiderweb of cracks erupted from the fissure, spreading with terrifying speed. The Alpha Frost-fiend, distracted by Ruslan’s relentless assault, looked up, its multifaceted facets flaring in alarm. But it was too late. With a deafening roar, the ceiling collapsed, tons of ice and rock pulverizing the creature, burying it beneath an avalanche of glacial death. The dust settled. Silence returned, broken only by the panting breaths of the vanguard. Ruslan leaned heavily on his steel rim, his shoulders heaving. Zlata, her face streaked with grime and awe, stared at the mound of rubble, then at Iskra, then at Semyon. Iskra stood tall, though a tremor still ran through her. “A near-miss,” she declared, her voice regaining its usual steel. She wiped a hand across her brow, her gaze sweeping over her team, lingering for a moment on Semyon. “But the Gryphons always prevail. Another legendary victory!” Ruslan’s gaze, however, was not on the fallen beast or his charismatic leader. It was fixed on Semyon, cold and heavy. “That,” he rumbled, his voice low enough that only Semyon could hear, “was not a near-miss.” Semyon merely met his stare, his own expression unreadable. He felt the familiar, insidious thrum in his mind, the Ledger announcing its latest update. [EXISTENCE TALLY: 98.7% REMAINING]
