Chapter 6 of 10
The Dragon's Hoard

Fenna’s gaze traced the brutal words, the seal of the Zilvermaan Synod a mocking glare against the parchment. Purged by sacred fire. The phrase hung sharp against the warm mist drifting off the mineral pool.
Kasimir’s form, previously relaxed beside her, stiffened. A faint tremor ran through his powerful frame. His pupils shrank to needle points in rings of gold, blank and hollow. The glow of the hearth-stone flickered low against the damp stone basin. Kasimir stood rigid, staring through the fog.
*Smoke… the smell of singed fir… the desperate cries of his kin, their scales crackling, splitting under the relentless inferno… the betrayal in his father’s eyes as the Synod’s sacred flames consumed everything…* The memories slammed into him with the force of a battering ram, ripping him from the present. He saw the proud Heliodor crest, emblazoned on the dark gates of their ancestral stronghold, melting into slag. He heard the triumphant chants of the wolf packs, their howls celebrating the eradication of his people, deemed an affront to the natural order. Heat seemed to scorch his ribs from within, tight and suffocating.
He gasped, a sound torn from deep within his chest, and lurched upright, his golden eyes snapping back to Fenna, but seeing not her, but the ghosts of his past. *Not again.* He couldn’t lose her to those vengeful fires, not after finding her, finding his mate, his home. His pulse pounded with a singular demand: shelter her, bury her away from the sky. He grabbed Fenna by the arm, his grip surprisingly gentle despite the urgency that contorted his features. “Come,” he commanded, his voice rough, urgent. “Now.”
Fenna blinked, startled by the abrupt shift. “Kasimir, what…?” But he didn’t wait for an answer. He hauled her from the water, Snuf yelping as spray caught his snout, and ushered her through a concealed fissure in the wet rock.
They traversed narrow tunnels, the air cooling to a crisp draft, until the path spilled into a high-vaulted hall deep within the peak. Crystal formations glittered like frozen starlight, and the walls hummed with an almost imperceptible energy. In the center, a colossal barrier of black volcanic glass veined with silver stood fixed against the rock. It was featureless, seamless, an impenetrable barrier.
Kasimir pressed his palm against the door. A complex array of runes, previously invisible, flared to life, weaving a shimmering pattern across the surface. With a low, grinding groan that vibrated through the rock floor, a section of the door slid inwards, revealing an opening just wide enough for them to squeeze through.
“Inside,” he urged, pushing her gently forward. “It’s safe here. Nothing can reach you in my hoard.”
Fenna stepped through, Kasimir following immediately. The moment they were inside, the door began to slide shut, the grinding sound echoing deafeningly in the enclosed space. The interior was vast yet entirely barren. No glittering heaps of gold or hoard-silver rested here; only glassy black walls, a single rough-hewn stone bench, and dead air. It was drafty, too, a cold current snaking along the floor from somewhere high above.
“Your hoard?” Fenna asked, her voice flat, looking around at the austere room. “This is… not what I expected. And it’s quite cold.” She rubbed her arms, a tiny puff of cloud-dust escaping Snuf’s fur as he shivered. “And rather dull.”
Kasimir ignored her assessment of his vault’s aesthetics. He moved to the closing door, his hand already tracing a series of locking runes etched into the interior frame. “It’s impenetrable,” he stated, his voice tight with a desperate conviction. “The walls are keyed to my own life-force. Even a full Synod purger cannot breach this vault.” The massive door *thunked* shut, plunging them into near darkness, save for the faint, residual glow of the runes Kasimir had just activated. He stood with his back to her, arms pressed against the door, as if he could physically hold it shut against the ghosts of his past.
Fenna exhaled slowly, watching his taut shoulders. He genuinely believed this cold cell was safety. It was touching in a desperate, deeply inconvenient way. She wanted to roll her eyes, but held back. This wasn’t a time for sarcasm. It was, however, a time for a nap, and this drafty cave was utterly unsuitable.
She stepped to the black glass wall, ignoring the chill through her soles. “I appreciate the thought, Kasimir,” she said, her tone a little too casual for the gravity of the situation. “But I can’t exactly plan our defense from in here.” She ran a finger across the smooth stone, feeling the faint hum of its runic structure. She closed her eyes for a moment, letting her mind lazily drift, mapping the subtle energy flows, the intricate weaving of protection and locking spells Kasimir had unconsciously used. He’d gone for brute force, an unbreakable physical barrier, rather than elegant, layered enchantment.
“You are safe,” Kasimir repeated, turning to face her, his features shadowed and his golden gaze intense. “That is all that matters.”
Fenna tutted. “Oh, Kasimir. You underestimate me.” She leaned against the door, barely a minute after it had sealed. With a casual flick of her wrist, she traced a single, delicate line in the air, a simple undoing rune, no bigger than her thumb. It shimmered with a soft, White Wolf light for only a breath, then vanished. “There,” she said, pushing lightly on the door. It slid open with a soft *whoosh*, revealing the winding tunnel outside. “Much better. It was getting dreadfully stuffy in there.”
Kasimir stared. His mouth parted, then closed. He looked at the now-open door, then at Fenna, then back at the door, his carefully constructed fortress dismantled with an effortless gesture. The panic that had seized him began to recede, replaced by a profound, almost comical, bewilderment. His shoulders slumped, the frantic instinct draining away as he let out a harsh breath. He ran a hand through his hair, a faint flush rising on his cheeks.
“I am not a damsel in distress, Kasimir Heliodor,” Fenna said, stepping back into the tunnel, pulling him with her. The breeze outside the vault was crisp, carrying the clean scent of crushed pine needles from the upper shafts. “I’m the White Wolf of Zonnendal Peak, the one who just automated our entire sanctuary in an hour. And I have a few more tricks up my sleeve.”
She turned to face him fully, her expression softening, her eyes meeting his. The residual fear in his gaze was still there, but now it was mixed with awe, and something deeper, something she felt mirroring in her own chest. She recognized his clumsy urge to guard her, just as clearly as she felt her own drive to shield him and hold this ground.
She dropped to one knee. Not a humble genuflection, but a steady, deliberate motion. In her outstretched paw, a runic ring shimmered into existence, woven from pure light, intricately knotted with symbols of binding and strength. Its white luminescence cast long shadows across the fluted stone columns. Her voice, usually soft, carried with a newfound conviction that left no room for doubt.
“Kasimir Heliodor, you stubborn, magnificent lizard,” Fenna said, meeting his gaze with a faint smirk. “Alpha Bramen means to force a mate-rite, to claim what he thinks is mine. But it’s not. It’s ours. So, let’s give him nothing to claim. Let’s make our own binding. Mate me. Now. Let us stand as true mates, before the mountain, before the spirits, before anyone else can dare to try and tear us apart. What do you say?”
Kasimir froze, the braided ring mirrored in his amber pupils as air caught in his throat. He opened his mouth, words forming on his lips to seal the offer.
Before he could utter a single syllable, a deafening crack, like the world splitting asunder, echoed through the mountain. The air shuddered, showering fine slate dust from the chamber ceiling. The sanctuary’s outer ward, Fenna’s meticulously crafted, cozy forcefield, had shattered. And then, a voice, amplified by crude magic, boomed through the shattered barrier, resonating through the courtyard, shaking the foundations of the peak itself. Bramen’s voice. “Fenna Vossen! Come out, little wolf! Your time is up!”
