Chapter 3 of 10
The Scent of Regret

The patch of blinding white fur pulsed faintly, a beacon beneath Fenna's paw. It wasn't just white; it was the color of fresh snowfall kissed by the first rays of dawn, vibrant and alive against the fading grey of her old coat. She flexed her toes, feeling a strange new vigour hum through her veins, a resonant echo of the Hearthstone's steady thrum. It felt… right. Like a missing piece slotting into place, or a long-forgotten melody stirring to life.
“You are tethered,” Kasimir repeated, his voice a low growl of disbelief, cutting through the wonder. He looked from the glowing hearth to her chest, then back to the hearth, as if trying to find a logical flaw in the stone’s ancient decree. His sharp eyes narrowed, fixing on the white patch. “A true keeper? You’re a banished grey wolf, barely capable of staying awake.”
Fenna merely yawned, a delicate stretch of her jaws. “Maybe,” she purred, feeling the warmth of the magic seep deeper, “I was always meant to be more interesting than I let on.” She settled onto her haunches, nudging Snuf, who was already sniffing a loose cobblestone. “Now, about this ‘tethered’ situation. Does it come with room service? Or maybe a self-cleaning function for my new cozy sanctuary?”
Kasimir stared, his irritation warring with a flicker of something unreadable in his gaze. “Self-cleaning? You’ve bound your essence to a derelict peak, not a gilded manor!” He threw his hands up, a huff of exasperation escaping him. “And it means if this peak falls, so do you. If the magic here wanes, so does your life force. You’re its guardian now, whether you like it or not.”
“Perfect,” Fenna murmured, already picturing a lifetime of undisturbed naps, knowing the mountain itself would protect her from the outside world. “Less effort on my part.”
Far below, in the heart of the low valley, a chill wind swept through the pack’s main den. Alpha Bramen Wald scowled, kicking at a sputtering hearth. The fire, usually a vigorous blaze, had dwindled to a pathetic flicker, refusing to catch despite the best efforts of the youngest pups. His morning draught of mulled sun-spice, meant to be warm and invigorating, was lukewarm and flat. The automatic mending runes, which had swiftly repaired torn cloaks and broken hunting spears for generations, now left jagged tears unrepaired.
“This is unacceptable!” Bramen roared, his voice echoing off the grimy walls. “The pack’s conveniences are failing! First the ward-lanterns dim, now the hearths refuse to burn. It’s a curse, I tell you! A blight upon our bloodline!”
One of his senior omegas nervously wrung her paws. “Alpha, could it be… because Fenna is gone? She had a… knack for maintaining the smaller workings. She always knew just how to whisper to the stones.”
Bramen sneered. “Nonsense! That dullard only knew how to trip over her own paws. Her banishment was a purification, a necessary cleansing decreed by the Zilvermaan Synod! Any perceived competence was merely the pack’s magic struggling to compensate for her sluggish soul.” He paced, his arrogance inflating with every stride. “No, this is a test. A test of my leadership. The pack needs a powerful hand to restore order.” A glint entered his eyes. “A powerful hand, and a submissive spirit to perform the menial tasks.”
He stopped abruptly, a cruel smile twisting his lips. “She may be banished, but her blood is still bound to our name. The prophecy of the Blighted One merely removes her from a place of honour, not from service. She is still bound to my will, and her unique… talents… are still mine to command. She will be brought back. Not as a mate, of course, but as a thrall. A tool to restore what she unknowingly disrupted.”
With a snap of his fingers, Bramen summoned a dozen of his most loyal, if dim-witted, wolves. “Prepare to ascend Zonnendal Peak. I will retrieve what is mine.”
As the group began their arduous climb, Fenna, still basking in the Hearthstone’s glow, felt a faint tremor beneath her paws. It was a rhythmic thudding, growing steadily stronger, accompanied by the distinct scent of agitated pine and a faint, acrid tang of something metallic. Kasimir’s head snapped up, his ears swiveling. His golden eyes, usually half-lidded in weary resignation, now burned with sharp alertness. He was no longer a grumpy recluse, but a coiled predator.
“Get down!” Kasimir hissed, lunging forward. He seized Fenna by the scruff of her neck, ignoring her indignant squawk, and hauled her roughly towards a narrow crevice in the ancient stone wall. Snuf, startled by the sudden movement, tumbled after them, letting out a confused puff of cloud-dust.
Just as Kasimir shoved Fenna into the cramped, shadowed alcove, a shower of loose shale and gravel rattled past, followed by the dull rumble of heavier rocks. The air filled with the scent of freshly disturbed earth and the heavy musk of panicked wolves. Fenna landed awkwardly, pressed flush against Kasimir’s broad, muscular chest. Her face was buried in the warm fur of his neck, the unfamiliar scent of pine needles, smoke, and something primal, intensely *him*, filling her senses.
The impact struck Fenna not with pain, but with white-hot recognition. A searing warmth erupted deep within her, centered right where the white fur on her chest met the solid wall of Kasimir's chest. It bloomed outward, a rush of understanding, of belonging, so profound it stole her breath. Her instincts, long dormant under layers of feigned dullness, flared to life, recognising a truth so ancient it predated memory. *Mate.* The single, undeniable word echoed in her mind, a chime of destiny.
Kasimir stiffened against her, a low groan rumbling in his throat. His lungs caught, and his own body went rigid for a long moment. Fenna felt the subtle shift in his aura, a sudden surge of raw power, wild and untamed, before it was reined in with a visible effort. His scent, previously a complex blend, now intensified, intertwining with her own awakening essence. She felt a connection form, a delicate, yet unbreakable thread weaving between their very souls, pulling taut.
Just outside their hidden alcove, Snuf, oblivious to the sudden, explosive shift in the atmosphere, continued his truffle hunt. His nose twitched, following an irresistible subterranean aroma. With an excited squeak, he dug furiously, unearthing a gnarled root, and something else – a palm-sized, smooth river stone, etched with faint, swirling symbols. It radiated a cold, stale energy, holding a memory of whispered words and clinking coin.
*“…the Synod’s favour for… the blight upon the valley… ensure the ritual…”* The faint, ghostly echo of Bramen’s voice, younger and laced with triumphant malice, pulsed from the stone, playing out a hidden memory for Snuf alone. He blinked, tilted his head, then, deciding it wasn’t edible, nudged it dismissively with his nose.
Footfalls crunched closer, and a familiar, arrogant voice carried on the wind, sharp and clear despite the rustling foliage. “Search every crevice! I smell Fenna’s faint scent, but… it’s layered with the musk of another. A lesser Alpha, surely. A foolish brute trying to claim what’s mine.” The words were a low growl of possessive rage, punctuated by a chilling directive. “If you find him with her, kill him on sight.”
