Chapter 9 of 10

The Severing Ritual

A cruel, triumphant tug yanked Banyu forward. Semar’s fingers, bound in stolen soul-filaments, bit like cold iron clamps. The elder hauled him through mist-shrouded gardens, past banyan branches whose bare roots twisted like petrified serpents. Kirana lay crumpled by the stone basin, her ribcage hitching in shallow jerks. Semar dragged him down stone steps without a backward glance. The path descended, the air growing thick with a humid chill, carrying the scent of damp earth and something metallic, like old blood. The descent spiraled, the sounds of the mansion fading until only the rhythmic splash of unseen water remained. Semar’s laughter, a low, guttural rumble, vibrated in Banyu’s bones. “You feel it, don’t you, boy? The heart of this house. The nexus point. Where the veil between worlds thins.” The corridor widened into an underground vault, faintly green with phosphorescent moss. At its center, a subterranean font bubbled, glowing pale cerulean. This was the estate's spiritual confluence, the wellspring feeding House Angin's art. Semar forced Banyu to his knees upon an obsidian slab flanking the pool. The stone hummed, a resonant thrum that vibrated up Banyu’s spine, making his teeth ache. Around the rim, worn glyphs carved deep into basalt sparked faintly. Semar stood over him, cutting a silhouette against the basin's blue pulse. His stolen phantoms, swirling in gray ribbons, unfurled to envelop the stone. A blunt force drove into Banyu's sternum, drilling past bone toward his inner marrow. It wasn't physical, but a profound, invasive force that sought to unravel him. “The extraction begins,” Semar intoned, his voice rattling off the wet walls. “Your Resonance, Banyu, is a raw, untamed current. A river without banks. I will be its new channel. Its ultimate master.” The drag tightened, scalding hot against his marrow. Banyu felt himself stretching, like taffy pulled thin, his consciousness splitting. It was a sensation of profound dislodgment, as if an invisible hook had latched onto his deepest self and was yanking. His vision blurred, the cave walls seeming to ripple. He saw his hands, then felt them separate from *him*. The world dimmed, colors leaching away, leaving only the blinding, painful white of pure essence being torn. Panic, cold and sharp, threatened to consume him. Then an upward force hit him from inside—the line of dead masters. Their preserved echoes, stirred earlier in the gallery of relics, flared awake. He had learned to feel their emotions, to perceive their stories. Now, in his desperate hour, they responded. It wasn’t a surge of power, not a weapon to strike Semar, but a chaotic, indignant surge of presence. A thousand voices, voiceless, screamed in his mind. A thousand lives, formless, coalesced around his fracturing being. They were a shield, a bulwark of defiance. The severing pull, immense as it was, met resistance. The process stalled, stuttered. The siphoning stalled, jammed by the density of generations pressing into the breach. Semar roared, a sound of pure frustration. “Impossible! What is this… interference?!” His tethered phantoms lashed out, rebounding against the barrier raised by the dead masters. The vault shuddered. Banyu shook, the tearing agony blunted by the ancestral ward swelling under his ribs. The elder’s face, usually calm even in villainy, contorted into a mask of rage. He forced more siphoned energy through the conduit, redoubling the pull on Banyu's chest. “Foolish boy! You merely delay the inevitable!” Semar snarled. He lifted a hand, a dark tendril of Gema Jiwa coiling around Banyu’s throat, intending to choke the life from his physical form while his soul was still tethered, making the final separation easier. Before the coil could bite, a figure darted from the entry archway. Kirana Jelita, no longer feigning unconsciousness, launched herself like a spear. Her mouth was a straight line, her gaze locked on the elder's exposed ribs. She moved with the silent, lethal grace of a predator, her body radiating a faint, emerald aura. Her left hand, palm open, struck Semar’s flank with the force of a battering ram. The contact resonated with a sharp, crackling sound, like ice shattering. Semar grunted, a genuine sound of pain and surprise, his concentration momentarily broken. The dark tendril around Banyu’s throat dissolved into mist. “You… you feigned your demise!” Semar bellowed, spinning, his spectral forms whipping around him like angry storm clouds. Kirana didn't respond, already twisting away, drawing a gleaming, razor-sharp short blade from her sleeve. She lunged again in precise thrusts, forcing Semar to twist away and slacken his hold on Banyu. This was the chance Banyu needed, precious seconds snatched from the jaws of oblivion. The ancestral ward inside Banyu hardened, throwing off the siphoning grip. The pain of being ripped eased, replaced by the profound ache of being stretched to the breaking point, but not quite breaking. As Kirana circled, a heavy vibration shuddered through the rock floor. A deep, groaning rumble vibrated through the rock. With a sharp crack, the upper masonry fractured, showering the pool in gravel. Water, dark and churning, burst forth in a furious deluge. A ruptured culvert poured brine through the breach in a roaring sheet. Paijo stood in the gap, soot streaking his cheeks and a pipe wrench gripped in both hands. “You forgot about the plumbing, old man!” he shouted, his voice hoarse but triumphant over the roar of the flood. Salt-heavy runoff crashed into the pool, clouding the cerulean glow in foam. The effect was instantaneous and devastating. Semar's phantom coils frayed, their edges boiling away like grease on hot iron. The air crackled, not with Gema Jiwa, but with static discharge. In the heart of the Pondok Sunyi, where soul-remnants were amplified, the effect was amplified a hundredfold. Semar screamed, a sound of pure agony. The stolen soul-remnants that powered him, now bathed in the disrupting salt water, short-circuited. His body convulsed, his eyes rolling back. Unbound force discharged from his shoulders in erratic flashes, gouging the stone. Kirana, caught in the chaotic backwash, was thrown against a wall, but not before she saw the elder’s momentary vulnerability. Banyu, his soul still half-severed, still stretched precariously between worlds, felt the sudden, violent weakening of Semar’s hold. The pull on his essence lessened dramatically, replaced by a searing pain as the parasitic imprint on his own soul flared, reacting to its master’s agony. Semar, disoriented and enraged, clawed at his chest, as if trying to rip out the burning, failing power within him. His bloodshot eyes darted across the flooded floor as his stolen reserves drained away. He was vulnerable. And Banyu, in that fractured state, saw his chance, a sliver of clarity cutting through the torment. He pushed with everything he had, not against the pain, but into it, gathering the defiance of his ancestors, the fury of his own betrayed heart, and the raw, untamed power of his Resonance. His hand, still trembling, reached out towards the convulsing elder.
