Chapter 5 of 10
The Broken Leash
787 words
“The Grand Magister is not testing you,” Zofia said, her voice low. “She’s trying to awaken something inside him.”
Damir shifted his gaze from Pavlo, still curled against the soot-stained rock, to Zofia. The broken datascroll in her hand was not simply damaged; it was rent down its central axis, the intricate circuitry of its runic memory fractured beyond repair. He noted the precise angle of the break, the clean snap of the crystalline core. This wasn’t battle damage.
“Awaken what, Rostova?” Damir’s voice was a flat, lethal query. Irena’s warnings about the boy's fraying mind echoed back, sharp and unheeded.
Zofia stepped closer, her eyes scanning the desolate Crater of Ashwood, then settling on Damir’s face. “You already know, Handler Volkov. Pavlo’s bloodline is old, far older than the Council admits. It stretches back to the First Calamity, to the tales of the Eclipse Fiend.”
Pavlo flinched at the words, his head snapping up. “Eclipse Fiend? What are you talking about?”
“The one who almost ended Varos,” Zofia continued, ignoring Pavlo. Her focus was solely on Damir, her expression stark. “Kateryna isn’t just seeking to empower him. She wants to shatter his spirit, to make him a hollow vessel for the power within. The sabotage in the supply lines, the compromised spirit-draughts… that was my attempt to warn you. To slow her down. It failed.”
Irena’s visions, the shadow wearing Pavlo’s face, the creature's whispers, the System Lock—Rostova had not merely observed; she had cultivated every trial. And Damir had worked the soil for her.
“This scroll…” Damir gestured to the fractured artifact. “What does it contain?”
Zofia presented it to him, handling it with a reverence that belied its ruined state. “A copy of an ancient decree, hidden in the deepest archives of the Spires. It details forbidden rituals, bloodline attunements, and the prophecy of the primordial shade. Not the champion of dawn you guide, but its ruined core. It speaks of a force capable of tearing the veil to the Miasma, outlining the exact conditions for release: extreme spiritual duress, utter abandonment, and a conduit of immense cultivated power.”
She paused, letting the words sink in. “Every trial Pavlo faced, every hour of terror… Kateryna designed it to fracture him, inviting the ancient horror to claim its husk. She wants to loose it, Damir. Not for defense, but for her own engineered order.”
Rostova’s target was never just the boy; it led straight to Irena. As a spirit-seer, her fragile tether to the unseen planes made her the prime quarry for an unshackled abomination. The vengeance Damir had built, supposed to insulate his sister from harm, had guided the blade toward her throat. He clamped his fists until the leather of his gloves creaked.
“You are her daughter,” Damir stated, his voice devoid of emotion, a dangerous edge beneath the flat tone. “Why are you telling me this?”
“Because her design is madness,” Zofia said, chin lifting. “The world she seeks to forge will consume us all. And because I watched you manage your beasts in the Miasma, Handler. You are ruthless, yet you preserve what you cultivate. Rostova values only power. I will not be her instrument.” Her gaze held his, unwavering. “I have been gathering evidence for cycles. This scroll was to be my final piece, proof of her intent. She caught me. She broke it. She knew I would come to you.”
“She knew,” Damir repeated, the words tasting like ash. “She’s playing us both.”
“Yes. And now, she arrives to collect.” Tension drew lines around Zofia's mouth. “The entity within Pavlo… it’s not just growing in power. It’s learning. It’s adapting. It’s hungry.”
Damir looked at the trembling Pavlo, then at the broken datascroll. He had been so blind, so consumed by his own righteous fury. He had cultivated a weapon that could destroy everything he sought to protect. The Council, the Spires, Rostova—they were no longer the only enemy. The ruin of the world sat shivering in the dirt before him.

Damir read the glowing runes, his jaw set. The vendetta against the Spires shrank beside the sheer scale of the collapse awaiting them.
He pocketed the broken datascroll, the sharp edges digging into his palm. “What’s the plan, Rostova?”
Before Zofia could respond, a scout burst into the Crater of Ashwood, his breath ragged, uniform soiled with ash and sweat. He fell to one knee before Damir, gasping for air.
“Handler Volkov! Urgent dispatch from the Spires! Grand Magister Kateryna Rostova… she is en route to the Vanguard. For a personal inspection of the boy's progress.”
