Chapter 4 of 10

Whispers of the Void

Damir’s hand tightened on Irena’s wrist, his gaze sweeping the shadowy corners of the tent. He heard only the distant calls of night pickets and the rustle of canvas under the wind. Her fevered skin grew hotter beneath his touch, her eyes fixed on something only she could perceive. “Rostova,” she repeated, a ragged gasp. “She’s not just watching, Damir. She’s… leaning on him.” Kateryna Rostova, the Grand Magister, orchestrating sabotage, testing them, now actively probing the camp. His sister, frail as a winter reed, was often the first to sense the tides of the Miasma, but her spirit-sight had never been this targeted, this specific. He pressed a damp cloth to her forehead, the gesture automatic, his mind already spinning through contingencies. His hound showed cracks before the iron set. Dawn broke, not with the usual hopeful warmth, but with a cold, metallic tang on the air. The Vanguard had moved through the night, marching toward the designated rift zone. The air thickened with a sickly sweet scent as they neared the Crater of Ashwood, a barren depression where the veil between worlds had worn thin. Pavlo, positioned at the forefront, his armor gleaming, stood unnaturally stiff. He kept glancing at Damir, a silent plea in his wide, earnest eyes. Damir, though, offered no comfort. Damir guided him as he would any hound, measured and cold. “Maintain formation, Herald’s Guard!” Damir’s voice cut through the tension, clear and unyielding. “The quarry is a Volnir brood-queen. Expect an initial charge from the northwest ridge. Focus all ranged attacks on its primary spinal channels.” He pointed a gauntleted finger towards the shadowed slopes. “Pavlo, you engage after the first volley. Isolate it near the brimstone vents.” Pavlo nodded, a flicker of trepidation crossing his face. “The steam vents, Handler?” “Its dermal plates turn aside steel,” Damir stated, ignoring the young man's unsteady tone. “Yet the beast's blighted hide sloughs under mineral steam. It will slow its regeneration and expose the secondary channels.” He knew the risk. The fumaroles were volatile, prone to sudden, scalding eruptions. But with Pavlo’s Evolution Pathways locked, brute force was not an option. Ingenuity, and Zofia’s intel, were all he had. A guttural roar ripped through the air, shaking the very ground. A monstrous, multi-limbed creature, its chitinous hide rippling with sickly purple energy, hurtled down the ridge. The brood-queen matched Zofia’s ciphered notes, four pairs of glowing nodes pulsing along its spine. It moved with a terrifying, unnatural speed, closing the distance in heartbeats. “Volley!” Damir barked. Arrows and runic bolts struck the creature's carapace. Most shattered, but iron-tipped shafts biting near the glowing nodes drew an ear-splitting shriek. Pavlo charged, his greatsword, Dawnbreaker, a blur of silver. He moved with practiced grace, a dancer of death, deflecting the creature's scythe-like appendages. The creature was immense, its every strike capable of pulverizing rock, but Pavlo met it, blow for blow, driving it back toward the boiling fissures. Damir tracked the footing. He saw the beast flinch from the noxious fumes, saw its skin begin to blister, precisely as Zofia’s classified data had suggested. Yet the creature surged with corrupt violet discharge, pitching Pavlo back with a concussive blast. Pavlo slammed into a jagged rock, his breath expelled in a ragged gasp. [WARNING: Target 'Pavlo Solovyov' receiving critical internal Miasma exposure. System recommendation: Initiate 'Purging Light' Evolution Pathway. STATUS: LOCKED.] “Pavlo! Sever the tertiary nodes beneath the rib-plates!” Damir shouted, pointing to the belly blistered raw by the vents. “Now!” The Herald, shaking off the impact, rose, his movements stiff. The beast lunged, snapping pincers forward. Pavlo blocked, parried, but the beast was relentless, its rage fueled by the corrosive fumes. One of its massive legs slammed into Pavlo’s side, crushing his armor, sending him sprawling. His sword clattered away. “The thermal pools, Pavlo!” Damir bellowed. Its immense bulk would founder on the brittle travertine. Pavlo rolled beneath the descending rake of a foreleg. He scrambled across the mineral flats, luring the brute after him. Its massive tonnage cracked the salt crust, and a leg dropped into a boiling fissure. Steam hissed, and its purple glow sputtered into gray haze. This was it. The opening. “Drive it home! Strike the central eye!” Pavlo plunged Dawnbreaker into the main ocular slit, driving the crossguard flush. The carcass shuddered violently, discharging black bile before collapsing into the ash. The battle was over. A narrow, brutal victory. Pavlo stood panting, his armor dented, his face streaked with grime and sweat, leaning heavily on his sword. He looked utterly drained, not triumphant. Later, while skirmishers quarried core crystals from the carcass, Damir found Pavlo sitting on an ammunition crate. The boy smelled of scorched tallow and stale copper. Damir approached, his footsteps soft on the ash. He knelt beside the young man. “You performed well, Pavlo. Your control under pressure was exemplary.” It was not praise, but a clinical assessment. Pavlo looked up, his eyes wide and haunted. “I… I heard a voice, Handler.” His voice was barely a whisper. “During the fight. It wasn’t yours. It was… inside me. It told me I didn’t need to struggle. It told me I could have limitless power. It offered to make me invincible.” He shivered, clutching his knees. “It felt… so close. So real. I almost… I almost listened.” The shadow wearing Pavlo’s face had found its tongue. The twilight bled purple and orange across the Crater of Ashwood. Zofia Rostova appeared, a silhouette against the fading light. She held something in her hand, a broken Council datascroll, its intricate runes fractured. She moved with a calculated grace, stopping before Damir, her gaze direct, unwavering. “My mother is not testing you,” she said, her voice low. “She’s trying to awaken something inside him.”
