Chapter 2: The First Divine Blasphemy

Cold stone bit into Kael's shattered spine, but the fire in his blood burned hotter. Rain washed over his face, mixing with the dark, thick fluid leaking from his chest. Jagged edges of the ancient obsidian altar dug deep into his shoulder blades, anchoring his broken frame to the ruined temple floor. Every shallow breath tasted of copper and wet earth. Those useless appendages below his waist were nothing but dead weight now, ruined by his father's guards before they threw him over the cliff. Death should have taken him hours ago, yet his stubborn heart refused to stop beating. Looking up at the broken stone canopy, Kael stared into the dark forest above. Water dripped from ancient gargoyles, splashing onto his pale, mud-smeared skin. Emperor Valerius had wanted him gone, erased from the annals of the Kingdom of Night. His own father had ordered the executioners to break him, to strip him of his royal birthright, and to toss his body into the deep abyss like common trash. Ruined, crippled, and discarded. Such was the fate of a prince who dared to question the absolute authority of the High Council. Suddenly, the ancient stone beneath his back began to hum. Crimson light seeped from the deep cracks in the obsidian, illuminating the ancient, moss-covered runes carved into the altar. It pulsed, matching the slow, dying rhythm of his failing heart. Blood pooled around his body, but instead of staining the stone, it was being drawn into the altar's deep grooves. "So small. So broken." A voice echoed not in the clearing, but directly inside the hollow chambers of his mind. It was vast, ancient, and dripping with a heavy, suffocating weight that made his lungs seize. Kael clamped his jaw shut, his teeth grinding until they threatened to crack. "Who is there?" he choked out, his voice a pathetic, wet rattle. Flickering shadows around the ruined temple stretched upward, defying the natural light of the moon. They coalesced into a massive, formless shape above him, sporting eyes of burning gold that stared down with cold amusement. "I am the beginning," the voice purred, vibrating through his teeth. "I am the soil that drank the first drop of life. I am the one your foolish modern kin tried to bury in the dark." She was the Goddess of Blood and Prosperity. Kael recognized her from the forbidden texts he had secretly read in the royal archives before his exile. She was the primordial entity the high vampires had abandoned centuries ago in favor of their sterile, structured system of six-mark emperors. "You are dying, little prince," she whispered, a phantom finger of pure, freezing energy tracing the edge of his shattered collarbone. "Your imperial blood is spilling into my mouth, yet you grip your fading life with such ugly, beautiful desperation. Why?" Images of his father, Emperor Valerius, flashed behind Kael's eyelids. He saw the emperor's golden eyes filled with absolute disgust. He remembered the heavy iron boots crushing his kneecaps. He felt the humiliation of being stripped of his titles in front of the entire court, treated like a rabid dog. "Vengeance," Kael hissed, a bloody froth bubbling on his lips. His fingers clawed weakly at the wet stone, chipping his nails to the quick. "I will not die in the dirt," he snarled, his voice rising through the pain. "Not while they sit on their high thrones, laughing at my ruin." A low, dark laugh vibrated through his bones. "A delicious answer," the Goddess murmured, her golden eyes flaring with ancient hunger. "The high-vampire council has grown fat and arrogant. They hoard the sacred marks. They limit their potential to six, fearing the true heights of my divinity. I want them ruined. I want my power returned." She leaned closer, the golden light filling his entire vision until the forest disappeared. "I offer you a pact, Kael of the Night," she declared. "I will mend your broken frame. I will give you back your legs, your strength, and a power that will make the empire tremble. In return, you will be my harvester. You will rip the sacred marks from the backs of your kin and feed them to me." Kael's mind raced despite the agonizing fog of blood loss. His analytical nature, the paranoia that had kept him alive in a court of vipers, screamed at him. This was a trap. A divine leash. He would be trading his father's tyranny for an ancient goddess's hunger. But what choice did he have? Die here as worm food, or become a monster capable of tearing his betrayers apart. "Do it," Kael growled, his eyes burning with a sudden, venomous resolve. "Give me the power. I will tear their marks out with my bare hands." "Then receive my blessing, my wrathful child," she hissed. Instantly, the liquid blood pooling on the altar reversed its flow. It did not run off the stone. Instead, it defied gravity, bubbling upward and rushing back into his open wounds like a torrent of molten iron. Kael's eyes went wide. An agonizing scream tore from his throat, echoing through the desolate forest. Liquid fire flooded his veins, burning away the cold numbness of death. It was not a healing touch. It was a violent, invasive reconstruction. Inside his back, his shattered spine began to pop and snap. Dead nerves were forcibly ripped open, rewired with threads of pulsing, golden-red energy. The pain was absolute, white-hot, and suffocating. He felt every single microscopic tear in his muscle tissue being stitched together with searing thread. His legs, which had been cold and lifeless for hours, suddenly twitched. Spasms of agonizing electricity shot down his thighs. He could feel again, but the sensation was so intense he wished for the numbness to return. He clawed at his chest, his fingernails tearing his own flesh as he tried to escape the unbearable heat. "Hold still," the Goddess commanded, her voice no longer soft, but a crushing weight that pinned his shoulders to the stone. "To rebuild a vessel, the old clay must be shattered," she added, her laughter echoing in his mind. Kael gasped for air, his vision turning completely white. Amidst the physical torture, a deeper, colder horror settled in his chest. He felt a phantom thread wrapping around his very core. It was a thick, heavy cord of divine authority, anchoring itself to his soul. His mind was no longer entirely his own. He could feel her presence dwelling in the dark corners of his consciousness, a sleeping predator waiting to pull his strings. He had survived. He had his mobility back. But he had sold the very essence of his being to a starved, vengeful deity. Liquid fire in his veins began to settle, leaving behind a cold, dense power that hummed with terrifying potential. His heart, which had almost stopped, beat with a slow, heavy thud that sounded like a war drum in his ears. He could feel the air moving over his skin. He could hear the rustle of leaves miles away. He could smell the iron in his own blood, and the scent of the executioners who had left him here. "Rise," she whispered. His broken body rises, hovering in mid-air as a burning, phantom mark begins to carve itself into the center of his shoulder blades with a violent hiss.
