Eating Fire and Reclaiming the Heritage

A guttural roar ripped through the burgeoning storm, rising from the stone floor of the arena. Panic erupted. Figures in the packed stands, from robed elders to eager disciples, shrieked, scrambling over each other like agitated scorpions. The first discharge descended, a furious whip of violet plasma, striking the gilded canopy of the Spectator’s Perch and vaporizing a section of the ornate railing into glittering dust. Charred splinters rained down, accompanied by the terrified cries of those narrowly missed.
“Fool! You’ve doomed us all!” Sect Leader Rengal’s voice, usually a booming command, was a strained squeak as he frantically erected a jade energy barrier, shielding his own person while his elite retinue scattered like newborn ducklings.
Lin Zichen, still gripping the blade over Tuoba Shan’s neck, stared in bewildered fury, his silk robes flapping in the sudden gale and oiled hair whipping across his cheeks. “What is this madness, Huo Yanting? Have you finally lost your mind?” His face contorted, a mask of aristocratic outrage. “To desecrate the Crucible Arena with… with *that*!”
Tuoba Shan, still kneeling, risked a glance at his friend. Huo Yanting stood unmoving, a bizarre beacon of calm amidst the maelstrom. The amber fissures on his skin pulsed with a rhythm that seemed to challenge the thunder. His eyes, though, were fixed on Lin Zichen with an intensity that promised utter ruin.
Chi Mei’s voice, a silken whisper inside Yanting’s skull, held a note of wicked glee. *“Ah, my dear, the skies are truly displeased. Such potent wrath. It reminds me of a particularly rowdy banquet with the Jade Emperor. Now, before they turn you into a fine dusting of medicinal powder, remember your task. That pampered brat is radiating a truly delectable vitality… the stolen essence of your own lineage, perhaps? A fine appetizer.”*
The sect scion, recovering a sliver of composure as further electrical arcs shattered the empty stands, decided to seize the initiative. This was clearly Yanting’s doing; he would crush him for it. With a defiant yell, he raised both hands. A searing, emerald green flame erupted from his palms, coiling and spitting like a captured dragon. This was the Heavenly Flame, a treasure passed down through his family for generations, said to be capable of incinerating anything. “You think a mere tribulation can save you, gutter trash? I will burn you to ash before the storm even touches you!”
The emerald fire surged forward, a hungry, roaring surge of heat aimed squarely at Yanting. The air around it shimmered, distorting the panicked faces of those still attempting to flee. It was a terrifying display of raw power, hot enough to melt stone.
Huo Yanting watched it approach, his expression utterly blank. Internally, a cold, desperate calculation churned. *Lungs. Green. Mushroom. Roast. Now.* His throat, still raw from the lotus, twitched.
Then, to the horror of every living soul in the arena, Huo Yanting opened his mouth. Wide. Unhinged. He tilted his head slightly, as if sampling a fine wine, and simply… inhaled.
The Heavenly Flame, a force meant to destroy, streamed into his mouth, a brilliant emerald torrent disappearing down his throat. There was no scream, no gagging, no sign of pain. Only the sound of the raging fire diminishing, then gone. A faint, almost imperceptible plume of green smoke curled from his nostrils.
Lin Zichen froze, mouth hanging open. He stared unblinkingly at the unburnt figure. “What… what sorcery is this?” he stammered, the confidence draining from his voice like water from a cracked urn.
*“Excellent, darling! A connoisseur of flames, I see,”* Chi Mei purred, stabilizing the chaotic influx as raw heat flushed through Yanting’s meridians. *“Just a little more, and those delightful little fungi will be perfectly caramelized.”*
Meanwhile, the arena descended further into pandemonium. Another arc, thicker than a tree trunk, split the stone floor of the arena itself, sending jagged shards flying. Tuoba Shan, his face grim, knew he couldn’t stay put. He looked at the terrified faces of the few remaining innocents huddling in corners, at the frantic martial artists caught between the tribulation and Lin Zichen’s fury. A deep-seated instinct, a responsibility long suppressed, flared within him.
He pushed the blade from his neck, startling Lin Zichen. “Huo Yanting, you idiot! At least consider the bystanders!” Tuoba Shan roared, his voice suddenly resonating with an unfamiliar, regal authority. He slammed his palm against the ground. “By the ancient pacts of the Azure Peaks, I, Tuoba Shan of the Sunstone Wilds, command you!”
From the very earth, a spectral beast rose, shimmering into existence. It was a colossal, six-legged shadow panther, its eyes glowing with ancient, fierce intelligence. Its ethereal form rippled, absorbing the impact of a stray lightning bolt that would have vaporized a section of the crowd. The panther, radiating protective aura, snarled, its phantom roar echoing the thunder. It positioned itself between the terrified spectators and the unfolding apocalypse, a silent, majestic shield.
Huo Yanting, his lungs now pleasantly warm and fungal-free, felt the raw heat of the ingested Heavenly Flame mingle with the searing power of the tribulation arcs now lashing wildly around him. His core, a nascent vortex of amber light, spun faster, eagerly devouring the chaotic forces. His focus narrowed onto the scion, who was now trembling with rage and fright. Yanting’s hand, still faintly glowing, extended slowly.
The air around the rival crackled. Faint gilded specks, almost invisible to the naked eye, were ripped from his frame, swirling toward Yanting like iron filings to a magnet. The young master cried out, a high-pitched, childish whimper. He felt a profound emptiness, a sudden, horrifying sensation of something vital being torn from his very core. His knees buckled. His proud posture crumbled. He clawed at his chest, tears streaming down his soot-stained face as if trying to hold onto the essence that was being brutally extracted.
The gilded motes coalesced around Yanting’s outstretched palm, forming a miniature, swirling sphere of pure, radiant essence. He clenched his fist. The radiance flared, then was absorbed directly into his rapidly solidifying Core. A resonant *thrum* vibrated through the arena, a sound of absolute completion. Huo Yanting's skin knit together, the fissures sealing shut as his flesh settled into serene immobility. He had ascended. He had claimed his Core Formation.
The scion lay on the paving stones, a limp, whimpering wreck, his cultivation extinguished and his pride utterly broken.
But the clouds were not yet done. Above the arena, the swirling vortex of dark clouds, though briefly subdued by Yanting’s breakthrough, pulsed with renewed fury. It condensed, drawing all its remaining power into a single, terrifying point. A bolt of pure, annihilating crimson, fat and malevolent, crackled into existence. It was the sect-crushing wrath of the sky, a final, unyielding judgment. With a deafening shriek of tearing air, it hurtled directly toward Huo Yanting’s head.
