Chapter 3: Pride Part I

1.4k words

Cold wind bit through the cracked obsidian walls of Necrokeep. Ash drifted from the gray sky like soot, settling over the jagged spires of the fortress. Standing at the edge of the parapet, Hestia wrapped her heavy woolen cloak tighter around her shoulders. Her fingers clutched the stone railing, her knuckles turning white under the strain. Down below, the barren valleys stretched out toward the horizon, scarred by centuries of dark magic. Somewhere beyond those jagged mountains lay the abyssal kingdom, a place where light went to die. She could feel the pressure of that place even from here, a heavy, suffocating weight that pressed against her chest. "Heavy lies the crown, little sister," a voice echoed from the archway behind her. Hestia did not flinch. She had heard the soft, dragging footsteps long before the speaker arrived. Turning slowly, she faced her older sister, Alice. Alice stood clad in midnight-blue armor that seemed to absorb the dim light of the courtyard. Dark rings circled her eyes, testament to the sleepless nights spent in the haunted castles of the abyssal lands. A faint smell of sulfur and damp earth clung to her like a second skin, a grim reminder of where she had spent the last five years. "You look terrible," Hestia said, her voice flat, devoid of the warmth they used to share as children. Chortling softly, Alice walked forward, her boots clicking against the flagstones. "Traveling through the dead zones does not leave much room for beauty sleep. But we have more important things to discuss than my appearance." Silence fell between them, heavy and suffocating. Hestia watched her sister's hands. They were shaking, a subtle tremor that Alice tried to hide by resting her palms on the hilt of her twin daggers. It was a telltale sign of fear, a weakness Alice never used to show. "Why are you here, Alice?" Hestia demanded. "Necrokeep is no place for a casual family reunion. The borders are closed, and my guards have orders to shoot strangers on sight." Leaning against a stone pillar, Alice stared out at the barren wasteland. "Our world is fracturing. The resistance is crumbling, and the dark forces are moving faster than we can adapt. We need to unite." "Unite?" Hestia's eyebrows arched in skepticism. "You and me?" "Yes," Alice insisted, stepping closer, her gaze intense. "An alliance between my forces in the abyssal kingdom and yours here. One strong, unbreakable group. Together, we can survive whatever storm is coming." Hestia turned away, looking back over the valley. Her jaw clenched so hard her teeth ached. She knew what lay behind those words, the hidden poison laced in every syllable. "A noble proposal," Hestia murmured, her voice dripping with quiet sarcasm. "But you were never one for grand alliances, Alice. You always preferred to fight alone. You always said others only slowed you down." "Times change," Alice snapped, her voice cracking slightly before she quickly regained control. "We must change with them if we want to live." --- Inside the great hall of Necrokeep, a single iron chandelier hung from the vaulted ceiling, casting long, flickering shapes across the stone floor. Dust motes danced in the pale light of the dying hearth. The two sisters sat opposite each other at a massive oaken table, a map of the fractured realms spread between them. Alice traced a finger along the border of the abyssal lands. "My soldiers are ready. We have the numbers, the weapons, and the tactical advantage of the high ground. If you merge your forces with mine, we can secure the northern pass." Watching her sister closely, Hestia noticed the way Alice avoided her eyes. Every time their gazes met, Alice looked down at the map, her fingers twitching against the parchment. The brave, fierce sister she remembered would have stared her down, demanding compliance. "Who gave you this map, Alice?" Hestia asked softly. Startled, Alice blinked, her breathing hitching for a fraction of a second. "I drew it myself. From the scouts' reports." "Liar," Hestia whispered. Anger flashed across Alice's pale face, her cheeks flushing with sudden, hot color. "I came here to offer you salvation, Hestia! Do not insult me in your own hall." Hestia stood up, her chair scraping loudly against the stone floor. She leaned over the table, placing her palms flat on the wood, staring directly into her sister's eyes. "You think I am blind to what goes on in the abyssal depths?" Hestia's voice dropped to a dangerous whisper. "I know about the master of the haunted castles. I know about the shadow that commands you." Alice froze, the color draining from her face just as quickly as it had risen. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. "You did not plan this alliance," Hestia continued, her tone relentless. "This is his plan. The lord of the abyss. The one who holds your leash. He compromised you, didn't he?" Clenching her fists, Alice stood up to meet her sister's gaze, though her eyes filled with sudden, desperate tears. "You do not understand, Hestia. You do not know what he is capable of. He is not a man. He is a force of nature." "I know he forced you," Hestia said, her voice softening slightly but remaining firm. "I know he threatened your people, and forced you to play the puppet. But playing his game will only destroy us both. If we agree to this alliance, we are handing him Necrokeep on a silver platter." "We have no choice!" Alice cried out, the composure she had maintained since her arrival completely shattering. She slammed her fist onto the table, rattling the map. "He has eyes everywhere. If I do not deliver this alliance, he will burn my castle to ash with everyone inside it!" Grief warred with anger in Hestia's chest as she looked at her sister. The fearless warrior who had once protected her from the dark was now reduced to a trembling pawn. She felt a deep, boiling rage at the monster who had broken her sister's spirit. "There is always a choice," Hestia said, stepping around the table to stand beside Alice. She reached out, placing a hand on her sister's trembling shoulder. "But we cannot build an alliance on a foundation of lies and coercion. We must fight him, not submit to him." Alice looked down, a single tear slipping down her cheek, leaving a clean trail through the grime on her face. "He is listening, Hestia. Even now, he knows we are talking. He planted a tracking rune on my armor before I left." A cold dread settled in Hestia's stomach. She looked around the cavernous hall, suddenly feeling as though the shadows themselves were leaning in to hear their whispers. "Let him listen," Hestia declared, though her heart hammered against her ribs. "We will not be his prey." Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the courtyard outside, followed by the frantic shouting of guards. Screams of terror cut through the icy night air, abruptly silenced by the sound of tearing flesh. Both sisters spun toward the heavy iron doors of the hall. The air grew freezing cold, frost rapidly spreading across the stone walls and creeping under the doorway. "He's here," Alice whispered, her eyes wide with absolute terror. "He didn't even wait for my answer." Hestia drew her iron dagger, the blade catching the faint light from the window. "How did he follow you so quickly?" "The rune," Alice gasped, clutching her chest where a dark, purple glow began to pulse beneath her armor. "It wasn't just a tracking device. It was a portal anchor." Before Hestia could react, the massive wooden doors of the great hall exploded inward, sending shards of iron and splintered oak flying across the room. Through the ruined archway walked a figure cloaked in living darkness, his eyes burning like twin dying stars, his armored hand holding the severed head of Hestia's chief guard. Smiling a cruel, jagged smile, the shadow knight stepped into the room, his gaze locking onto the terrified sisters as he whispered, "Your time is up."
