Chapter 2: Untrusted Ally

Heavy iron boots scraped against the flagstones of the obsidian war room. Black wax dripped from melted candles, pooling like dried blood on the massive stone table. Lord Malakor, known to the realm as the Dark Knight, did not look up from the leather-bound maps spread before him. Sweat beaded on the forehead of Alex, a lower-ranking knight who stood trembling near the heavy oak door. "Report," Malakor commanded, his voice a low vibration that rattled the metal studs in Alex's leather jerkin. Alex swallowed hard, his throat dry as ash. "Vanguard forces are assembled, my Lord," Alex whispered, stepping forward with his head bowed low. Maps of the barren lands lay spread between them, their edges curled and singed from previous councils. "We need a foothold," Malakor muttered, his massive gauntleted hand tracing a jagged line across the northern wastes. "Tell me, Alex. Where should we establish our primary camp?" Silence stretched between them, thick and suffocating. Alex shifted his weight, his chainmail clinking in the quiet room. "Barren lands offer little cover," the lower knight began, his voice wavering. "Any position on those open plains leaves our flanks entirely exposed to enemy scout patrols." Malakor slowly raised his head, his dark helm reflecting the flickering orange firelight. Two glowing slits of crimson light pierced the darkness of his visor, locking onto the younger man. "I did not ask for a lecture on basic tactics, knight," Malakor rumbled. "Give me a location. Your head is on the block if your hesitation costs us time." Fear gripped Alex's chest, but he forced himself to take a deep, trembling breath. "Control of the Waterpolo Basin is our ultimate objective, is it not?" Alex asked, pointing to the blue vein marked on the dry map. "If we secure the southern plains, we control the flow of the entire region's lifeblood." Malakor grunted, his armored fingers tapping rhythmically against the stone table. "Water is the only currency that matters in these dead plains," the Dark Knight agreed. "Without the Waterpolo reservoir, our armies will wither and die before we even reach the capital." "Exactly, my Lord," Alex said, his confidence growing slightly. "But the enemy knows this, and they have fortified every wellspring along the main path." "Which is why we must strike from an unexpected angle," Malakor growled, his lean body tensing beneath his heavy plate armor. "State your proposal, knight, before my patience runs completely dry." Trembling, Alex reached out a gloved hand toward the map. "What if we should revise our original strategy, my Lord?" he suggested, his fingers hovering over a dark, isolated spot on the parchment. "Instead of the open plains, we should establish our main encampment at Necrokeep." Malakor did not blink, his crimson gaze following the finger. "Necrokeep," the Dark Knight repeated, the word sounding like a death knell in the quiet room. "That cursed fortress has been abandoned for a century." "It lies just beyond the border of the barren plains, nestled within the jagged cliffs," Alex urged. "Its high stone walls are still standing, providing natural defensive barriers against any sudden siege." He stopped speaking as a sudden pressure filled the chamber. Air became thick, heavy, and impossibly hard to breathe. Slowly, Malakor rose from his stone throne. Height was one thing, but the sheer physical presence of the warlord made the massive room feel like a claustrophobic tomb. A wave of intense heat radiated from the dark armor. Metal expanded with sharp, popping sounds as the temperature in the room began to spike. Sweat began to pour down Alex's face in thick rivers, stinging his eyes and dripping from his chin. Breathing became an agony of boiling steam. Stone walls of the chamber cracked, tiny fissures spider-webbing across the ancient granite as the heat intensified. It felt as though they stood in the very heart of a volcano, the air shimmering with invisible waves of distortion. "You dare suggest we trap ourselves in a dead-end valley?" Malakor asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous, vibrating purr. Step by step, the giant in black armor closed the distance between them. Boots thudded like war drums against the scorching stone floor. Alex tried to back away, but his legs felt like lead, his boots practically melting against the stone floorboards. Horror paralyzed his limbs as the temperature soared toward a blistering, suffocating thousand degrees. "An abandoned ruin with only one entrance and no escape routes if we are cornered," Malakor growled, now standing inches away. Waves of raw, destructive energy rolled off the Dark Knight's plate armor. "Do you think me a fool, Alex?" "No, my Lord!" Alex gasped, his skin turning a bright, painful red from the oppressive heat. "I only thought... I believed the defensive advantage of the stone walls would outweigh the risks!" "Liar," Malakor hissed. Before Alex could formulate another lie, a massive iron gauntlet shot forward. Steel fingers clamped around the collar of Alex's thick leather gambeson, lifting him clean off his feet. Oxygen was cut off instantly as the tight leather pressed against his windpipe. Alex thrashed, kicking his legs in the empty air, his hands clawing uselessly at the unbreakable metal grip. "You are hiding something from me," Malakor hissed, his helm close enough for Alex to feel the blistering heat radiating from the metal visor. Smoke literally began to rise from the fabric of Alex's collar where the gauntlet held him. "Tell me the truth, or I will roast you alive inside your own armor." Panic flared in the younger knight's eyes as his skin began to blister from the sheer proximity to the Dark Knight. Choking, Alex tried to point toward his chest, his fingers twitching spasmodically. During the struggle, a corner of yellowed parchment slipped from an inner pocket of his jerkin. It caught the light of the dying candles, its ancient seal partially melted by the extreme heat. Malakor's crimson gaze flicked downward, instantly spotting the hidden document. With his free hand, the warlord ripped the letter from the pocket, tearing the leather fabric in the process. He threw Alex to the floor like a sack of unwanted grain. Alex collapsed, coughing violently and clutching his bruised throat as he gasped for the burning, dry air. Unfolding the dry parchment with his heavy fingers, Malakor stared at the elegant, spidery handwriting. Sparks of dark magic flickered across his gauntlets, threatening to incinerate the paper before he could even read it. Warlord Malakor forced his aura to subside slightly, the stifling heat in the room dropping to a dull, heavy warmth. Eyes scanning the lines of text, his grip tightened, crumpling the edges of the ancient letter. "What is the meaning of this?" Malakor demanded, his voice dangerously calm. Written on the parchment was a secret decree, bearing the royal wax seal of the enemy king. It detailed a planned ambush at Necrokeep—and it was addressed directly to Alex. --- Ash fell from the ceiling as the intense heat subsided, leaving a suffocating silence in the room. Malakor read the words again, his crimson visor flaring with a cold, murderous light. "To our ally inside the black keep," Malakor read aloud, his voice dripping with venom. "Our young rebel forces await your signal at Necrokeep." "We have prepared the trap. Once the Dark Knight enters the valley, we will activate the ancient Waterpolo engine and drown his forces in the gorge." Alex froze, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. His secret was out, exposed in the harsh light of the war room. Those brave kids, the ones fighting to save their ruined world, had trusted him to lead Malakor into their trap. Now, because of a stupid slip of paper, everything was ruined. "Explain this, traitor," Malakor commanded, turning slowly to face the trembling knight. No words came from Alex's mouth, only a weak, pathetic wheeze. "You thought you could conspire with children?" Malakor mocked, stepping closer, his heavy armor clanking with absolute malice. "A pack of orphans and runaways who think they can stop my grand design?" "They are stronger than you think," Alex spat, suddenly finding a desperate spark of courage. "They know what you plan to do with the Waterpolo engine. Your madness ends with them!" Malakor threw his head back and laughed, a harsh, metallic sound that echoed off the stone walls. "Let them try," the Dark Knight whispered, his voice dropping to a chilling whisper. "They are nothing but sheep marching to the slaughter." "And you, Alex, will be the one to lead them there." Alex looked up in horror, his eyes widening as he realized the sheer cruelty of the warlord's plan. "What... what do you mean?" Alex stammered. Malakor leaned down, his burning visor inches from Alex's face. "You will tell your little friends that I have fallen for the trap." "If you refuse, I will personally flay every skin from your bones and feed you to the hounds." "But if you cooperate, perhaps I will let a few of them live as slaves." Tears of anger and frustration blurred Alex's vision. He had wanted to save the world, to help the kids end this medieval nightmare of endless war. Instead, he had just handed the Dark Knight the perfect opportunity to wipe out the resistance in one single, devastating blow. "I won't do it," Alex whispered, his voice trembling but defiant. "You cannot force me." Malakor smiled beneath his dark helm, a sinister expression Alex could not see but could easily feel. "Oh, I think you will," the Dark Knight murmured. "Because if you do not, I will start burning the villages surrounding the Waterpolo Basin one by one, starting with your own family's home." Heavy silence settled over the room once more, cold and suffocating. Alex stared at the floor, his spirit completely crushed. He knew the Dark Knight was a man of his word when it came to violence and destruction. Choosing to comply meant sending his young friends at Necrokeep to their graves. There was no right choice, only a path of blood and ruin. "Write the letter," Malakor commanded, tossing a fresh piece of parchment and a quill onto the table. "Tell them we march tomorrow at dawn." Slowly, with trembling fingers, Alex reached for the quill. He began to write, each stroke of the pen feeling like a nail driven into his own coffin. Outside the window, dark clouds began to gather over the barren lands, mirroring the darkness in his heart. Malakor watched him write, his arms crossed over his massive chest, a dark shadow of doom looming over the entire world. As the final words were penned, a sudden, loud crash echoed from the hallway outside. Both men froze, turning their eyes toward the heavy oak door. Shouts of alarm rang out, followed by the unmistakable sound of clashing steel. Someone was attacking the keep. Could it be the kids, launching a desperate rescue mission before the trap could even be set? Malakor's hand instantly went to the hilt of his massive broadsword. "Stay here," the Dark Knight growled, his voice laced with venom. "If you move, you die." Before he could even take a step toward the door, it exploded inward, splintering into a thousand pieces. Standing in the dust of the shattered doorway was a figure Alex never expected to see here. It was Leo, the young leader of the resistance, holding a glowing blue water-relic that hummed with immense power. "Put the sword down, Malakor," Leo shouted, his voice cracking with youth but fierce with determination. "We are taking Alex, and we are destroying this place." Malakor laughed, drawing his dark, glowing blade with a slow, deliberate motion. "You are too late, boy," the Dark Knight whispered. "Your little friend has already betrayed you." Leo's eyes widened in shock as his gaze flicked from Malakor to the crumpled letter on the table. "Alex... is this true?" Leo gasped, his confidence wavering. Guilt choked the young knight, leaving him speechless as his friend's trusting gaze turned to utter disbelief.
