Chapter 27: A Fragile Truce

907 words

A small hand, warm and trusting, gripped Adrian's index finger. Leo's innocent question echoed in the air, piercing through Adrian's fury, through the thick, suffocating layers of betrayal. His breath hitched. Adrian stared down at the boy, whose eyes, wide and curious, mirrored his own. Those eyes. The shape of his nose. The slight curve of his lips. Impossible. Yet undeniably familiar. Adrian’s anger, a roaring inferno moments ago, flickered, doused by an overwhelming wave of something he couldn't name. It was a potent mix of paternal instinct, gut-wrenching grief for lost time, and a profound, aching love he hadn't known existed. Elara watched him, her tear-streaked face a mask of raw vulnerability. She saw the shift in his gaze, the way his jaw, previously clenched, now worked, battling an invisible force. He pulled his finger away, gently, almost imperceptibly. Adrian couldn't hold on, not yet, not with so much churning inside him. Rising slowly, Adrian turned from Leo, his eyes locking onto Elara's. His fury hadn't vanished; it merely receded, replaced by a cold, cutting precision. "We need to talk. Away from him," Adrian stated, his voice a low growl. Elara nodded, her shoulders slumping in weary resignation. She knew this conversation was inevitable, and far from over. Leo, sensing the change in atmosphere, looked from Adrian to Elara, his small brow furrowed in confusion. "Mommy?" he mumbled. "Go play with your cars, sweetie," Elara managed, forcing a weak smile. "Mommy and… Mr. Thorne have to talk for a moment." Adrian flinched at 'Mr. Thorne'. The casual dismissal of their connection, even in front of the child, stung him deeply. He led Elara to a secluded corner of the sprawling living room, far enough that their voices wouldn't carry to Leo, but close enough that Adrian could still feel the child's presence. "Five years, Elara," Adrian began, his voice tight, strained. "Five years you kept him from me. How could you?" Elara wrung her hands. "I told you, Adrian. I wanted to protect him. Your family, your business… it's not a safe world for a child." "And lying was safer? Erasing me from his life was protection?" Adrian's words were sharp, each one a barb. "It was the only way I knew!" she countered, tears welling again. "I saw how your family operates. The threats, the danger. I couldn't risk Leo being caught in the crossfire." His jaw tightened. He knew his family's reputation, their ruthless dealings. He couldn't entirely dismiss her fears, even as they infuriated him. Adrian scrubbed a hand over his face. He felt hollowed out, utterly drained. The anger was still there, a simmering coal, but beneath it, a profound sense of loss gnawed at him. "Look," Adrian said, forcing himself to calm down. "This… this cannot get out. Not now. Not ever, if we can help it." Elara blinked, surprised by his sudden shift in focus. "What do you mean?" "My family, the media, my rivals," Adrian explained, pacing a short distance. "If news of a secret five-year-old son surfaces now, it will be a feeding frenzy. It would destroy everything. My position, my company, and it would put Leo in unimaginable danger." Elara knew he was right. She understood the cutthroat world he inhabited. Her own reasons for hiding Leo stemmed from that very fear. "What do you propose?" she asked, her voice quiet. Adrian stopped, turning to face her. His eyes were cold, calculating, but beneath the ice, a flicker of something desperate burned. "A truce. Temporary. We maintain appearances. For now, to the outside world, Leo is… your son. No mention of me." Her heart sank, even though she knew it was the logical choice. The idea of denying Leo a father, even temporarily, was a fresh wound. "And Leo?" she questioned, her voice barely a whisper. Adrian's gaze softened, just a fraction. "I'll need to be around. I'll need to get to know him. We'll find a way to explain my presence." She hesitated, weighing the risks. The danger to Leo if Adrian's connection was exposed versus the pain of keeping Adrian from his son. It was a terrible choice, but Adrian's reasoning held weight. "Alright," Elara finally conceded, her voice barely audible. "A truce. But Adrian, you have to promise me you'll keep him safe. No matter what." "I swear it," Adrian vowed, his voice firm, resolute. A promise he intended to keep, even if it cost him everything. He knew this was just the first step. The first painful compromise. The first difficult lie. Yet, even amidst the fragile agreement, a cold, hard truth remained. A truth Adrian couldn't ignore, couldn't push away. He needed proof. Undeniable, irrefutable proof. Adrian stepped closer, his voice dropping to a low, demanding whisper. "There's one more thing. I need a DNA test. As soon as possible." Elara reeled back as if struck. The words, delivered with such clinical detachment, twisted the knife deeper in her heart. After everything, the shared moments, the undeniable resemblance, he still needed to verify it. Her eyes flashed with hurt and indignation. "You don't believe me? After seeing him?" Adrian's face remained impassive. "This isn't about belief, Elara. This is about certainty. For both of us. For him." His gaze was unyielding, cold, logical. It stung, far more than his initial anger, because it stripped away any semblance of trust or shared history, reducing their son to a mere biological equation. "It's the only way forward," Adrian insisted, his voice leaving no room for argument. "We do this, then we figure out the rest."
