Chapter 26 of 50

Aftershocks of Truth

947 words

A sudden, visceral punch to the gut. Adrian felt it. Every muscle in his body tightened, his breath catching in his throat. The world tilted on its axis, the familiar hum of the room fading into a distant roar. His eyes, wide and unblinking, fixated on the boy. Leo. His name, a whisper in Adrian’s mind, echoed with an unfamiliar weight. Standing there, small and innocent, with Adrian’s dark hair and the curve of Elara’s lips. The dimple, so distinct, Adrian had seen it countless times in his own reflection. It was undeniable. A truth so blinding it burned. Adrian’s gaze snapped to Elara, searing through her with an intensity that made her flinch. His jaw locked, a muscle twitching violently beneath his skin. Betrayal, sharp and bitter, coated his tongue. Warmth from the fireplace did little to thaw the arctic chill that now filled the room. Elara’s face, pale as ash, reflected his fury. Her eyes, wide and shimmering, darted between Adrian and Leo. She knew. She understood the silent accusation hanging heavy in the air. Her hand flew to her mouth, stifling a small gasp. Pushing past the initial shock, raw anger surged through Adrian’s veins. It was a tidal wave, crashing down on years of unspoken pain and unresolved grief. “You,” he ground out, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. Each syllable was laced with venom. “You lied to me.” Elara recoiled, her shoulders hunching. A single tear traced a path down her cheek, but Adrian saw only guilt. “Adrian, please,” she choked, her voice barely a whisper. “It’s not… it’s complicated.” Complicated? The word ignited another spark of rage. His hands clenched into fists, knuckles white. He fought the urge to smash something, anything, to release the burning inferno within him. “Complicated?” he roared, his voice cracking with the force of his emotion. “You kept my son from me for five years and you call it complicated?!” His words echoed in the sudden silence, sharp and unforgiving. Leo, who had been quietly playing with a toy car, looked up, his big, curious eyes blinking. Elara’s head snapped towards Leo, a desperate plea in her gaze. She took a hesitant step towards Adrian, her hands clasped together, trembling. “I didn’t want to lie, Adrian. You have to believe me,” she pleaded, her voice thick with tears. “I never meant to hurt you. I just… I wanted to protect him.” Protect him? The audacity of her words was staggering. Adrian let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh, devoid of any humor. “Protect him?” he scoffed, advancing on her. His shadow loomed over her, intimidating and dark. “By keeping him from his father? From his family? From everything he deserves?” She shook her head, tears now streaming freely down her face. “Your world, Adrian. It’s… it’s not simple. It’s dangerous. I saw what it did to your mother, to your family. I couldn’t let that happen to Leo.” Her sister, Sarah, had silently moved closer to Leo, shielding him subtly. Her eyes, filled with a mix of concern and fear, flickered between the warring pair. Adrian ignored her. His focus was solely on Elara, the woman who had stolen five years of his life with his child. Five years he could never get back. “So, you decided to make that decision for me? For him?” Adrian’s voice dropped, becoming dangerously soft, a stark contrast to his earlier outburst. “You played God with our lives.” “No! Never!” Elara cried, shaking her head vehemently. “After… after everything, after your father made it clear I wasn’t welcome, after the accident, I just… I didn’t know what else to do. I was scared, Adrian. So scared.” She wiped her tears with the back of her hand, her resolve hardening slightly. “I saw what the media did. What your business rivals were capable of. I imagined them using him against you, against us. I thought it was safer if he grew up away from all that. Just… a normal life.” Normal? Adrian’s mind reeled. A normal life without a father? Without a heritage? His family name, his legacy, ripped away from his son by a woman who claimed to love him. “You took away his right to know who he is,” Adrian accused, his voice rising again. “You took away *my* right to be a father. Do you understand the magnitude of what you’ve done?” She sobbed openly, her hands covering her face. “I understand I made a terrible choice, Adrian. But I made it for him. For Leo. I swear it. Every day I wanted to tell you. But I couldn’t. I saw how you were struggling after… after everything. I didn’t want to burden you more.” Burden him? The thought was absurd. Leo was a miracle, not a burden. He was the missing piece, the light that could have guided Adrian through the darkest years. He wanted to shout, to rail against her, to demand answers to questions that had no easy solution. The pain in his chest was excruciating, a physical ache that tightened with every beat of his heart. Seeing the intense, frightening emotions radiating from the adults, Leo slowly pushed away from Sarah’s side. His little brows furrowed in confusion. He felt the shift, the palpable tension. His small, determined footsteps carried him across the rug. He stopped a few feet from Adrian, his head tilted. Adrian’s gaze, still blazing with fury, softened imperceptibly as it landed on his son. Leo looked up at the tall, formidable man. His eyes, so similar to Adrian’s own, searched his face. A spark of recognition, innocent and pure, flickered within them. “Are you my daddy?” Leo asked, his voice clear and bright in the suffocating silence. His innocent question hung in the air, a devastating blow that shattered Adrian’s composure, plunging him into an abyss of deeper, more complex turmoil.
