Chapter 37 of 50
Chapter 37: Elara's Unwavering Support
894 words
A sharp gasp escaped Elara's lips.
Her blood ran cold, solidifying the horror Elias had just laid bare. Adrian Blackwood. The same man. The man who had stolen Lily, had also destroyed Elias's first family.
His shoulders slumped, a tremor running through his powerful frame. Elias stared at his hands, knotted and white-knuckled in his lap, the raw agony he tried to hide now completely exposed.
Seeing his brokenness, a different kind of pain bloomed in Elara’s chest. Her own fear for Lily, her resentment, faded slightly.
She saw past the formidable CEO. Past the man who had been cold and demanding. What remained was a man utterly gutted by unimaginable loss.
Slowly, Elara reached out. Her fingers hesitated before resting gently on his arm.
His muscles tensed under her touch, a reflexive flinch, but he didn't pull away.
"Elias," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I... I am so incredibly sorry. No one should ever have to endure such a thing."
He scoffed, a dry, humorless sound. "Sorry doesn't bring them back, Elara. Nothing does."
His eyes, red-rimmed and distant, finally lifted to meet hers. They held a depth of despair that chilled her to the bone.
"He took everything," Elias continued, his voice barely audible. "He took my wife. My son. He watched me burn. He enjoyed it."
Understanding dawned on Elara. This wasn't just revenge; it was pure, sadistic malice. Adrian hadn't merely sought to hurt Elias. He had sought to annihilate his very soul.
Rising from her seat, Elara moved to sit beside him on the plush sofa. The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken grief.
She imagined the terror, the desperation of Clara and Leo trapped in that inferno. The helplessness Elias must have felt.
A wave of profound sadness washed over her, not just for Lily, but for the innocent lives brutally extinguished, and for the man beside her who carried that burden.
"How did you… how did you survive?" she asked, her voice barely a breath.
Elias closed his eyes for a long moment, a muscle twitching in his jaw. "I didn't," he said, opening them again, his gaze piercing. "Not really. A part of me died with them."
He paused, taking a ragged breath. "Every day is a reminder. Every single day. I rebuilt my empire, but the foundation was laid on ashes."
His confession hung in the air, a raw, unflinching truth. Elara felt her own pain for Lily intertwine with his old wounds.
It explained so much. His fierce protectiveness. His ruthless drive. His impenetrable walls. All defenses built against a world that had already dealt him the ultimate blow.
Putting her hand on his, Elara squeezed gently. "You've been carrying this alone for too long, haven't you?"
He didn't answer, but his grip on her hand tightened almost imperceptibly.
"It's a terrible burden," she continued softly. "But you don't have to carry it by yourself anymore."
His head snapped up, a flicker of surprise, or perhaps disbelief, in his eyes.
"I know what it feels like to have your world ripped apart," Elara admitted, her voice trembling slightly. "To feel that soul-crushing fear for someone you love. The helplessness."
She met his gaze directly. "Adrian Blackwood has caused unimaginable pain to both of us. He's a monster."
"And he will pay," Elias growled, a dangerous edge returning to his voice. "He will pay for Clara. For Leo. And now, for Lily."
"Yes," Elara affirmed, her own resolve hardening. "He will. But we need to be smart. We need to be strong. For Lily."
His eyes searched hers, as if looking for any hint of wavering, any sign of pity that would offend him.
Finding only steadfast conviction, a flicker of something raw and exposed softened his harsh features.
She could see the years of grief, the unhealed wounds, etched into the lines around his eyes. She saw the boy who had lost everything, trapped beneath the powerful man.
Moving closer, Elara gently placed her hand on his cheek. His skin felt warm against her palm.
He flinched this time, a slight recoil, but then leaned into the touch, his eyes never leaving hers.
"We'll face this together, Elias," she promised, her voice clear and firm. "For Lily."
