Chapter 36: Elias's Haunted Past Revealed
811 words
Silence stretched, thick and suffocating, between them. Lily's crayon drawing lay on the polished conference table, a splash of innocent color against the grim legal documents. 'MY FAMLY' in wobbly letters. Elias stared at it, his jaw tight. Elara watched him, her heart aching for the storm she knew raged behind his guarded eyes.
"He's not just after Lily, is he?" Elara's voice was soft, barely a whisper. She picked up the drawing, tracing the happy stick figures with her thumb. "This is about something else entirely. Something older."
Elias flinched, a subtle tremor running through his rigid frame. He pushed a hand through his already disheveled hair. "Adrian is obsessed," he admitted, his voice raw. "He always has been. Since… since it happened."
"What happened, Elias?" Elara pressed gently. "You've never told me. Not really. I need to know. We need to face this together."
Running a hand over his face, Elias finally met her gaze. His eyes, usually sharp and penetrating, were clouded with an ancient pain. "My first family," he began, the words catching in his throat. "My wife, Clara. And my son, Leo."
Elara's breath hitched. She knew he had been married before, and that he had lost them, but the details had always been a tightly sealed vault. Hearing their names, real names, made it achingly real.
"Clara was… sunshine," he murmured, a ghost of a smile touching his lips. "Always laughing. Always vibrant. Leo inherited her spirit. He was six, a whirlwind of energy. Loved superheroes. Thought I was Batman."
His voice cracked on the last word. A muscle twitched in his jaw. Elara moved closer, her hand instinctively reaching for his, offering silent support.
"We were happy," Elias continued, his gaze distant, lost in a memory. "A perfect life. Everything I’d ever wanted. Then Adrian Blackwood entered the picture."
Elara frowned. "How? Why?"
"He was a disgruntled former employee," Elias explained, his tone hardening. "I’d fired him for corporate espionage. He swore he’d make me pay. Said he’d take everything I held dear."
Shivers ran down Elara's spine. Adrian’s hatred wasn’t just recent. It was a long-simmering vendetta.
"He stalked us," Elias went on, his voice flat, devoid of emotion, as if he were reciting a grim report. "Little things at first. Anonymous threats. Vandalism at our home. We reported it. The police couldn’t find definitive proof it was him. No one took it seriously enough."
Frustration etched lines around Elias’s mouth. "I tried to protect them. Hired extra security. Changed our routines. But he was relentless. Patient. He waited for the perfect moment to strike."
His knuckles whitened as he gripped the edge of the table. "Clara and Leo were at our lake house for the weekend. A quiet getaway. I was supposed to join them Saturday evening after a late meeting. Adrian knew the property inside and out. Knew the security blind spots."
Elara felt a cold dread creeping over her. She could almost picture it. The serene lake, the unsuspecting family.
"He set a fire," Elias stated, his eyes now fixed on some unseen horror. "Not just any fire. He rigged the house to go up in flames. Trapped them inside. The alarms… they were disabled. By him."
His breathing grew shallow, ragged. "I got the call. Drove like a madman. The smoke… I could see it from miles away. A dark plume against the night sky."
Elara’s hand tightened around his. Tears welled in her eyes, silent and stinging.
"Flames licked at the sky," Elias described, his voice a strained whisper. "Orange and red, devouring everything. The heat was immense, even from a distance. Firefighters were already there, but… it was too late. Always too late."
His head dropped into his hands, his broad shoulders shaking with silent grief. "I lost everything. And I swore no one would ever hurt my family again. But he found a way."
