Chapter 24: Confronting the Silence

907 words

Pacing the opulent study, Elara's mind raced. The file clutched in her hand felt impossibly heavy. Offshore accounts. Untraceable funds. A substantial donation, made years ago, long before Elias had ever stepped into their lives. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat of suspicion. She had tried to dismiss it, to rationalize the strange data. But the administrator's firm confirmation lingered, a cold knot in her stomach. Someone else had cared for Lily, in secret, with deep pockets. Someone, perhaps, who knew *everything*. Eventually, she heard the front door open, then close. Elias was home. Drawing a shaky breath, Elara forced herself to stillness, the papers rustling softly in her grip. Approaching the study entrance, Elias paused. His eyes, usually warm when they met hers, held a flicker of something unreadable. He must have sensed her tension. “Elara? Is everything alright?” His voice was calm, too calm, considering the storm brewing inside her. She didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she walked to the large mahogany desk, placing the file deliberately in its center. The sound of the paper hitting the polished wood echoed in the sudden silence. Elias walked in, his gaze dropping to the file. A subtle shift in his posture. His shoulders tightened. His jaw clenched, almost imperceptibly. “I went to the hospital today,” she began, her voice steady despite the tremor running through her. She watched his face, searching for any tell. His expression remained carefully neutral. He nodded, moving further into the room. “Yes, you mentioned you had some follow-up questions for Lily’s care team. Is everything okay with her next appointment?” “Not about Lily’s next appointment,” Elara clarified, her eyes narrowing. “About her past. About a donation.” Elias stopped dead, halfway to the armchair. His eyes, now sharp and alert, met hers. The air in the room thickened. He didn't speak. “A very large, anonymous donation,” she continued, pushing forward. “Made years ago. Before you ever approached me about Lily. Before you became… involved.” A muscle ticked in his jaw. “What are you talking about, Elara?” His voice was low, devoid of its usual warmth. It was the CEO voice, cold and unyielding. “Don’t play dumb with me, Elias.” Her own voice rose, a flicker of anger igniting. “I saw the records. Untraceable. Offshore. It covered almost all of Lily’s initial, critical care. Someone was taking care of her long before you entered our lives.” He finally moved, walking to the window, his back to her. His hands, usually so relaxed, were now balled into fists at his sides. The silence stretched, heavy and suffocating. “And it makes me wonder, Elias,” she pressed, stepping closer. “It makes me wonder about a lot of things. Like why you were so quick to take over all her expenses. Why you insisted on moving us into this penthouse. Why you’ve become so incredibly protective, so possessive, almost.” He turned, his face a mask of controlled fury. “I’m protective because I care about her! About both of you! What kind of man wouldn’t be? After everything you’ve been through.” “It’s more than that,” Elara countered, shaking her head. “It’s too much. It’s like… you knew. You knew something. You were prepared.” Her gaze dropped to the file, then back to his intense blue eyes. “And then there’s the donation. It’s too big to be a coincidence. Too perfectly timed. What aren’t you telling me?” His lips pressed into a thin, hard line. He looked away, then back, his gaze sweeping over her face as if searching for something. Or perhaps, bracing himself. “There’s nothing to tell, Elara. It was an anonymous donation. Hospitals receive them all the time. Perhaps a kind stranger, moved by Lily’s story.” His tone was dismissive, but his eyes betrayed him. They held a flicker of desperation, a haunted quality. “A kind stranger?” She scoffed, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. “Offshore? Untraceable? Please, Elias. This isn’t a small charity drive. This is calculated. And it happened before anyone but a select few even knew Lily’s story.” Elara’s mind replayed every moment. His sudden appearance. His immediate, profound connection with Lily. His unwavering determination to keep them safe, to provide everything. It all clicked into place, a horrifying, perfect puzzle. A puzzle with a missing piece that only Elias held. “You’ve been so guarded,” she accused, her voice trembling now. “Every time I ask about your past, about your family. You shut down. You change the subject.” He opened his mouth, then closed it. His gaze dropped to the floor, then lifted slowly to meet hers. The anger had faded, replaced by a profound, desolate sadness that sent a chill down her spine. “It connects, doesn’t it?” she whispered, the realization hitting her with the force of a physical blow. “The donation. Your protectiveness. Your secrecy. It’s all part of the same thing.” Her voice cracked, the raw emotion finally breaking through. Her vision blurred with unshed tears. Elias stood still, unmoving, his face a carefully constructed facade. His jaw tightened, a hard line etched into his face, his silence louder than any confession. “Tell me, Elias. What aren’t you telling me about Lily?”
