Chapter 23: The Anonymous Benefactor
855 words
Aching muscles protested Elara's every movement as she stirred. Sleep had been a brief, restless affair, punctuated by fragmented images of Elias's intense gaze and the glow of computer screens.
His office, still faintly smelling of his subtle cologne and stale coffee, felt like a distant memory. She’d left before dawn, a silent escape after the parasitic algorithm was neutralized, the threat temporarily averted.
Oddly, a strange calm had settled within her as she watched him work. A shared purpose, a quiet understanding, had momentarily eclipsed their usual animosity.
Now, the morning light streaming through her apartment window felt harsh. A headache throbbed behind her eyes, a constant reminder of the long, draining night.
Still, Lily needed her. Her daughter's fragile state was a constant weight, a silent alarm bell that never truly stopped ringing in Elara's mind.
Pushing aside the lingering fatigue, Elara prepared to visit the hospital. Lily was stable, but the recent setback with Project Nightingale gnawed at her.
Arriving at Lily's room, a wave of familiar love and worry washed over her. Lily looked peaceful, her small chest rising and falling with the steady rhythm of the machines.
While Lily rested, Elara decided to tackle some lingering administrative tasks. A stack of old medical statements sat on the small table in Lily’s room, untouched for weeks.
Insurance claims, co-pays, specialist consultations—a dizzying array of numbers that always made her head spin. She wanted to ensure everything was in order, especially with the research complications.
Scanning through a statement from nearly three years ago, a figure leaped out at her. A credit. A substantial one. Too large to be an insurance payout, too precise to be a billing error.
Her brow furrowed. She didn't recognize the entry. It was marked simply as 'Anonymous Donor' with a string of numbers that meant nothing to her.
Her heart began to thump a little faster. This wasn't a standard payment. It was a massive sum, deposited just months after Lily’s birth.
Elara racked her brain. Had she forgotten a major grant? An appeal? No. She remembered the early days clearly. Every penny had been a struggle, every doctor's visit a terrifying gamble.
Who would have given such a colossal amount, so early on, and remained anonymous? Elias had proposed his deal much later, after years of fighting to keep Lily alive.
This predated his involvement entirely. A cold knot formed in her stomach. Someone else, someone with immense resources, had been silently supporting Lily’s initial, most critical care.
Driven by a sudden, intense need for answers, Elara left Lily's room. She navigated the hospital corridors, her steps purposeful, seeking out the financial administration office.
Past the reception desk, a harried-looking woman with kind eyes sat behind a computer, surrounded by stacks of files. Her name tag read 'Ms. Chen, Patient Accounts'.
'Excuse me, Ms. Chen,' Elara began, holding up the old statement. 'I have a question about an entry here. An anonymous donation.'
Ms. Chen peered at the document through her glasses. 'Oh, yes. Lily Beaumont, wasn't it? Such a brave little girl.'
She typed rapidly on her keyboard, accessing records with practiced ease. Elara watched, her palms growing damp, a thousand questions swirling in her mind.
'Here we are,' Ms. Chen murmured, a small smile playing on her lips. 'A true blessing, that one. It covered a significant portion of her initial intensive care and early treatments.'
'But... who made it?' Elara pressed, her voice barely a whisper. 'I don't remember ever receiving such a large sum, or who it came from.'
Ms. Chen looked up, her smile fading slightly as she registered Elara’s intensity. 'It was indeed anonymous, dear. The donor insisted on it. No contact, no details.'
Elara's jaw tightened. An anonymous donor, years ago, just when Lily needed it most? This was too much of a coincidence, too precise to be random generosity.
'Are there any records at all?' Elara insisted, leaning forward. 'No account number, no legal firm, nothing that might hint at the source?'
Ms. Chen shook her head gently. 'No, I'm afraid not. It was a direct, untraceable transfer from an offshore account. Very sophisticated.'
A new layer of suspicion settled over Elara. Offshore? Untraceable? This wasn't just a kind stranger. This was someone deliberately hiding their tracks, someone powerful.
'How much was it?' Elara asked, her voice tight with a mixture of dread and burgeoning curiosity. She already knew it was substantial, but the exact figure might offer a clue.
Ms. Chen scrolled down the screen, her gaze fixed on the monitor. She paused, her eyes widening slightly before she spoke.
'The transfer came years ago, just after Lily's birth. An incredibly generous amount.'
