Chapter 43: A Costly Diversion
986 words
Flashing red lights pulsed, bathing the control room in an ominous glow. Augmented figures, their armor gleaming under the emergency illumination, formed an impenetrable wall before them. Each carried advanced energy weapons, their muzzles aimed with deadly precision. "Well, well, look what the cat dragged in," a voice sneered. Dominating the formation was a tall, lean operative, his face a mask of cold satisfaction. He held a sleek, modified pistol, its barrel impossibly long. "The Mentor sends his regards. He knew you'd arrive."
Kaelen felt a cold dread coil in his gut. They hadn't just reached their objective; they had walked into a meticulously prepared ambush. Rhys's team spread out, weapons raised, but the sheer number of enemy operatives was overwhelming. Each enemy soldier moved with an unnerving, almost robotic fluidity, their enhanced reflexes clear.
"Surrender now, and perhaps your pain will be brief," the operative continued, a cruel smile twisting his lips. He gestured with his pistol. "Otherwise, we'll strip you for parts and let the CEO watch."
Elara's jaw tightened. She gripped the compact energy pistol Kaelen had given her, her knuckles white. Surrender was not an option. Not after everything. Not after Rhys had risked his life to get them this far.
'Hold your fire!' Rhys barked, his voice strained. He saw the trap for what it was—a meat grinder. Engaging them head-on was suicide. They needed a diversion, something catastrophic.
"What's the plan, boss?" Jax, one of Rhys's most experienced men, asked, his eyes scanning for an opening. His pulse pounded in his ears.
Scanning the room, Kaelen's gaze darted from the enemy line to the control panels, then to the massive server racks humped against the far wall. An idea, reckless and desperate, formed in his mind. "We need to overload their comms hub," Kaelen whispered, pointing towards a cluster of high-frequency transmitters embedded near the ceiling. "It'll cause a system wide blackout, maybe even short out some of their tech."
Finn, Rhys's tech specialist, nodded grimly. He was already tapping furiously on his wrist-mounted comms device. "I can reroute the power surge, but I'll need a direct connection to that server stack. And time."
"You won't get any," the operative chuckled, firing a warning shot that sizzled past Elara's ear, impacting the wall behind her with an explosive crack. Sparks rained down.
Kaelen pushed Elara behind a reinforced console. "Rhys, cover Finn!" he commanded, pulling out his own sidearm. "Jax, with me! We create a distraction!"
Opening fire, Kaelen unleashed a volley of precise shots, aiming for the armored joints of the enemy soldiers. Jax followed suit, his heavier assault rifle spitting rounds. The augmented guards, though formidable, faltered for a moment, their shields deflecting the energy bolts.
Under the cover of the firefight, Finn sprinted towards the server racks, his fingers flying across his interface. He was fast, his movements practiced, but the enemy was faster. Two guards broke formation, advancing on him, their energy blades humming to life.
Rhys intercepted them, engaging in a brutal close-quarters battle. His combat knife flashed, parrying a blade, then slicing into an exposed power conduit on one guard's arm. The guard screamed, circuits sparking.
Finn was almost there, sweat beading on his forehead. He needed seconds, just a few precious seconds more. "Almost!" he yelled, his voice strained.
Suddenly, the lead operative shifted his aim, targeting Finn directly. A high-energy blast tore through the air, heading straight for the tech specialist.
"Finn!" Elara screamed, stepping out from cover, ready to fire.
Without hesitation, Finn stopped. He didn't duck, he didn't run. He turned, facing the incoming blast, and with a final, desperate surge of power, jammed a modified data spike directly into the heart of the server stack. He didn't even flinch.
Just as the energy blast struck him full-on, a blinding white flash erupted from the server. A deafening roar tore through the control room, followed by a shower of sparks and shattered metal. The entire room plunged into darkness for a heartbeat, then the emergency lights flickered back to life, weaker than before.
Enemy soldiers stumbled, their targeting systems glitching. Some of their weapons sputtered, useless. The comms hub above them was a mangled ruin, black smoke curling into the air.
"GO! NOW!" Rhys roared, grabbing Elara and Kaelen. "He bought us time!"
Pushing through the temporarily disoriented enemy lines, they scrambled for the only visible exit, a service tunnel access point Finn had marked earlier. Elara's eyes, however, were fixed on the smoldering crater where Finn had stood.
"No..." she whispered, tears already blurring her vision.
Kaelen pulled her along, his grip firm. "We have to go, Elara!"
Reaching the relative safety of the narrow tunnel, Elara wrenched free. She couldn't leave him. She darted back, ignoring Kaelen's frantic calls, ignoring Rhys's shouts for retreat. The operative was recovering, his enhanced vision cutting through the smoke.
Dropping to her knees beside Finn's motionless form, Elara’s hand trembled as she reached out. His armor was charred, a gaping hole in his chest where the blast had hit. His eyes, once bright with determination, were now vacant, staring sightlessly at the ruined ceiling.
Sobs wracked her body. He was gone. Finn, who had joked with Jax just moments ago, who had always been so calm under pressure, was gone. Sacrificed. For them.
Her fingers closed around the data spike still clutched in his hand, a final act of defiance. The metallic tang of scorched earth filled her nostrils. Hot tears streamed down her face, a torrent of grief and rage. This was the cost of their mission. This was the price of challenging the Mentor.
Lifting her head, Elara's eyes, red and swollen, burned with a fierce, cold fire. Her sorrow solidified into a diamond-hard resolve. Finn would not die in vain. She would make them pay. Every single one of them. For Finn. For everything.
