Chapter 42: Breaking Through
863 words
Ricocheting rounds screamed off the reinforced walls, a deadly chorus. Automated turrets, previously dormant, now whirred to life, spitting a torrent of lead. Exits slammed shut with a heavy, metallic clang, sealing their team inside a rapidly shrinking cage.
"Fall back! Get to cover!" Kaelen's voice cut through the chaos, a calm command amidst the storm. He shoved Elara behind a thick server rack, a shower of sparks erupting as bullets chewed into its casing.
"They've locked down the subnet," Elara shouted over the gunfire, her fingers already flying across her datapad. "I need a hardline, now!"
Sergeant Rhys and his operatives returned fire, suppressing the turrets with pinpoint accuracy. Their advanced armor absorbed the hits, but the sheer volume of incoming rounds was relentless.
Kaelen scanned their immediate surroundings. A labyrinth of interconnected server bays, now a kill zone. "Rhys, cover Elara! Give her time!" he ordered, then snatched a discarded power cable from the floor.
Twisting, ducking, he moved with predatory grace. His eyes fixed on a utility panel flickering erratically near a deactivated maintenance drone. He needed to create an opening, any opening.
Elara worked frantically, her brow furrowed in intense concentration. Wires trailed from her datapad, connecting to a console that sparked dangerously. "They've isolated the central network. It's a closed loop, an internal defense system!"
"Can you breach it?" Kaelen yelled, wrestling with the utility panel's stubborn lock. A surge of adrenaline coursed through him.
"Maybe! If I can reroute power from *anything* on this subnet, I can create a backdoor!" Her voice was strained, but her resolve was absolute.
Snapping the panel open, Kaelen jammed the power cable into a raw port. A jolt surged up his arm. He gritted his teeth, forcing a connection, diverting power from a non-essential cooling unit.
"Got it!" Elara's triumph echoed. "Power surge initiated! Targeting turret control..."
Suddenly, two turrets at the far end sputtered, their firing slowing to a crawl before grinding to a halt. A crucial diversion, but only temporary.
"Move! Northeast corridor!" Kaelen pointed, his tactical mind already processing their next escape route. "They'll have backup systems. This won't last."
Rhys's team laid down suppressive fire, covering their dash. They sprinted through the now-darkened server bay, the air thick with ozone and spent gunpowder.
Pushing forward, they found themselves in a long, metallic corridor. A faint laser grid shimmered ahead, nearly invisible against the polished floor.
"Pressure plates," Elara warned, pointing to almost imperceptible indentations. "And sonic emitters hidden in the ceiling. Don't touch anything."
Kaelen's gaze narrowed. "Elara, can you disable them from here?"
"I can try to spoof the system, create a safe path. It'll be slow," she replied, already tapping away.
Rhys's team spread out, providing perimeter security. Their eyes constantly scanned for new threats, their weapons ready. They were deep within the enemy's lair, and every shadow felt like a trap.
Carefully, Elara guided them. "Step right, Kaelen. Skip the third tile. Now, a wide step over the fifth."
Moving like dancers in a deadly ballet, they navigated the gauntlet. Each step was precise, calculated. The silent hum of the sonic emitters threatened to overload their senses, a subtle pressure building in their ears.
A sudden hiss. A jet of superheated steam erupted from a wall vent just inches from Kaelen's face. He recoiled instantly, his instincts screaming danger.
"New trap! Proximity activated!" Elara gasped, rerouting again. Her face was pale but determined. "They're throwing everything at us."
"They know we're here," Kaelen stated, his voice grim. "This isn't a random defense anymore. It's targeted."
They pushed through another automated door, forcing their way into a wide, open plaza-like area. Control consoles lined the walls, monitors displaying the facility's intricate schematics.
This had to be it. The central control room. Their objective was within reach.
Then, a new wave of alarms blared, a harsher, more insistent tone. Heavy bootfalls echoed through the chamber, rhythmic and powerful.
From the far end of the plaza, a squad of figures emerged. These weren't the standard guards. Their armor was sleeker, obsidian black, with glowing blue lines tracing intricate patterns. Their movements were impossibly fast, their forms powerfully augmented.
Leading them was a woman. Her posture was rigid, her eyes cold as polished steel. A scar, thin and white, slashed across her left cheek, a stark contrast to her otherwise flawless skin. She carried no visible weapon, yet her presence radiated deadly intent.
Her gaze locked onto Kaelen, then Elara. A cruel smile touched her lips. "So, the CEO and the Hacker. The Mentor has been expecting you."
Kaelen's hand tightened on the grip of his sidearm. A powerful, technologically advanced security force. And their leader, clearly operating under the direct command of the Mentor, had just revealed herself.
