Cramped. Dark. Tom gasped, muscles burning, his breath rasping in the stale air. He clawed at the cold metal lip of the vent opening, desperate to pull himself further into its suffocating embrace. Dust motes, thick and grey, swirled in the faint, flickering light spilling from the laboratory behind him. His knees scraped raw against the rough, unforgiving surface of the duct.
Behind him, chaos erupted, a sudden, brutal symphony of violence. Metal shrieked as an energy blast ricocheted off a wall. A guttural cry cut through the air, followed by the unmistakable, terrifying crackle of Rose's pyrokinetic energy, unleashed and untamed. He heard the sickening thud of bodies, the sharp grunt of effort. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drum against his fear. *Rose.* He pictured her, facing down an army.
He pushed, a surge of raw adrenaline momentarily overriding his terror, forcing his torso through the narrow opening. His shoulders groaned, protesting the tight squeeze. He twisted, attempting to use his meager telekinesis to nudge a stubbornly stuck boot, but the effort was weak, unfocused, dissolving under the weight of his mounting panic. His fear was a physical chokehold, tightening around his throat.
A blast of intense heat washed over him, searing his back even through his thin, regulation uniform. The air crackled with power, thick with the smell of ozone and burning plastic. He flinched, picturing Rose, a living inferno, her face contorted in a mask of pure, unadulterated defiance. He had to get out, he had to make space for her. He had to clear the way.
He kicked. His foot connected with something hollow; a loose grate clattered somewhere ahead in the ductwork, echoing ominously. His leg found desperate purchase on the inner rim of the vent opening. He pulled again, a strained, desperate grunt escaping his lips. Finally, mercifully, his hips cleared the opening. He tumbled forward a few feet, landing hard on his stomach in the cramped, grimy space, knocking the wind out of him.
Now he could only hear. Shouts from the corridor outside. The sharp, sizzling hiss of burning material. The metallic clang of a weapon hitting the cold, hard floor. Then, Rose's voice, not a shout, but a raw, animalistic scream of pure rage that sent a chill down his spine. He tried to push himself further in, to clear the entrance entirely, but his body was trembling, exhausted, pinned by a crushing wave of helplessness.
---
Rose roared. Heat coiled in her gut, a wild beast demanding release, a raging inferno she barely contained. Guards pressed in, their energy weapons spitting brilliant blue light, illuminating their grim, masked faces. Her anonymous rescuer, a blur of dark fabric and swift, efficient movements, engaged two, his blows precise, brutal, but more guards were already coming, flooding the corridor from side passages, surrounding them.
Their cold, clinical faces enraged her. They saw them as objects, as data points, as experiments to be contained and controlled. They would never see them as people. She wouldn't let them have Tom. Not again. Never again would they take someone from her.
Fire erupted from her palms. Not a controlled burst, not a precise stream, but a torrent, an uncontrolled conflagration. She didn't aim. She just *burned*. The heat swelled, pushing outwards, hungry and alive.
Monitoring devices embedded in the sterile white wall behind the guards exploded in showers of sparks and melting plastic. Wires fizzed, spitting out acrid, green-tinged smoke that smelled like burnt chemicals. One guard's energy shield flickered violently, struggling to hold its form against the assault, then died with a pathetic whine as the sheer thermal energy overloaded its delicate circuits.
Another guard screamed, a high-pitched, terrified sound, his uniform smoking as a wave of superheated air washed over him. He staggered back, clutching at his arm, dropping his weapon with a clatter. His eyes were wide with shock, not pain, but pure disbelief at the raw power unleashed. Rose didn't hesitate. She conjured a fiery whip, a crackling lash of pure plasma, lashing it out with vicious intent.
The whip cracked, a sound like thunder, searing the very air. It wrapped around a guard's energy rifle, instantly melting the barrel into a twisted, useless slag of metal. He cursed, recoiling sharply, scrambling back. His partner stumbled, eyes darting wildly through the smoke, momentarily stunned by the sudden, overwhelming inferno that had consumed their comrade’s weapon.
Rose spun, her body a whirlwind of controlled destruction, though the control felt precarious, slipping. Flames danced around her, forming a shimmering, protective barrier of heat that kept the advancing guards at bay. She saw the masked figure fall back, overwhelmed by the sheer numbers, his defensive maneuvers more desperate now. Tom was still half in, half out of that vent. She had to buy him more time. She had to give him enough space to disappear.
*Get out, Tom! Please, get out!* she mentally screamed, her focus narrowing to the vent opening.
A thick plume of black smoke billowed from the incinerated devices, quickly filling the corridor. The air grew heavy, hot, and suffocating, stinging her eyes and burning her throat. Guards coughed, their vision obscured, their movements slowed, disoriented by the sudden, blinding haze. This was her chance. This was their only chance.
Her fierce protectiveness for Tom burned brighter than any flame she conjured, hotter than the core of the sun. It was a primal, all-consuming fire that obliterated all other thoughts. She would raze this entire facility to the ground if it meant his freedom. Self-preservation vanished, replaced by an absolute, desperate resolve that coursed through her veins, chilling and burning all at once.
She pushed more fire, creating a solid, shimmering wall of heat between her and the stunned guards. The masked rescuer, now deeper in the smoke, gave her a quick, decisive nod, a silent acknowledgment of her desperate gambit, before dissolving further into the darkness, drawing two more confused guards after him, away from the vent.
"Tom! Move! Now!" she yelled, her voice raw, tearing through the din.
---
Rose turned, her eyes scanning the vent opening. She saw Tom's legs finally disappear into the dark maw of the duct. A wave of relief, sharp and potent, washed over her, momentarily weakening her fiery shield. Good. He was in. He was safe. Now it was her turn.
Rose took a deep, ragged breath, the acrid smoke stinging her lungs, making her cough. Her powers flared one last time, a blinding, searing burst of heat that pushed the nearest guards back another few steps, their hands coming up instinctively to shield their faces from the inferno. The heat was immense, momentarily clearing a path.
She lunged, scrambling towards the vent opening, her muscles screaming in protest. Her fingers scrabbled for purchase on the cold metal lip, finding purchase on a loose rivet. She pushed, twisting her body, smaller and more agile than Tom, but still a tight squeeze. The rough metal grated against her skin. She felt the intense heat of the corridor at her back, the frantic shouts of the guards growing louder, more desperate, as they began to recover.
One foot was in. Then her knee, scraping painfully against the rough edge. She gritted her teeth, straining, pulling with everything she had left. Almost there. Just a little more. She could feel the cool, stale air of the vent beckoning, promising escape.
A searing pain, impossibly sharp, shot through her left arm as a stray energy blast from a guard's weapon, a desperate, wild shot through the smoke, caught her. The impact sent a shockwave through her entire body, her grip loosening. She cried out, stumbling, sending her tumbling just inside the shaft opening, landing hard on her side.
