Chapter 6: Through the Vent
801 words
Screeching metal ripped through the air. The cell door shuddered, then swung inward with a groan, revealing not a guard, but a figure cloaked in dark fabric. A stylized mask obscured their face, leaving only glints of eyes visible in the dim hallway.
Rose reacted first. Her hand shot out, grabbing Tom's arm. "Move!"
Adrenaline surged through Tom's veins, cold and sharp. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drum against the sudden, terrifying silence that had fallen after the door's protest. Was this it? Was this really happening?
"Over here!" the masked figure hissed, voice muffled. They gestured frantically towards a dark opening high on the wall, a maintenance vent with its grate already pried open. The metal frame glinted, a promise of escape.
Footsteps thudded, growing louder. Several guards rounded the corner, their stun batons humming with readiness. Their shouts echoed, harsh and guttural.
"Prisoners! Stop!"
The masked rescuer didn't hesitate. They lunged forward, a blur of motion. A guard met them, baton arcing. The rescuer ducked, swift as a phantom, and a sharp crack echoed as a wrist twisted, followed by a grunt of pain. The guard dropped, collapsing in a heap.
Another guard closed in, weapon raised. The rescuer moved with brutal efficiency, a series of quick, powerful strikes. They were a whirlwind of controlled violence, each movement precise, aimed to incapacitate, not kill. They held the line, a solitary barrier against the encroaching threat.
Rose’s eyes were wide, alight with a fierce, desperate hope. She tugged harder on Tom. "The vent, Tom! Now!"
His feet felt glued to the floor. This was too fast, too sudden. Months of dull, monotonous captivity had dulled his reflexes, his will to act. He was accustomed to being told what to do, where to go, how to exist. This chaotic freedom was a shock to his system.
Rose didn't wait. A sharp, powerful shove sent Tom stumbling forward, directly towards the open vent. His hands scraped against the cold, metallic wall, catching his balance just before he face-planted. He spun, his eyes meeting hers.
"Go!" she yelled, her voice strained. Her eyes darted between him and the escalating fight. Flames flickered at her fingertips, a dangerous, beautiful halo.
Panic coiled in Tom's gut. He saw the genuine terror in her expression, masked by her usual defiance. He saw the raw determination. This wasn't a drill. This wasn't another mind game by the Directorate. This was real.
He had to move. The thought hit him like a physical blow. The memory of his family during the blackout, their helpless fear, the inability to protect them, flashed through his mind. That gnawing powerlessness, that deep-seated wound, threatened to paralyze him again.
Not this time. Not again. A surge of raw, unfamiliar resolve coursed through him, cutting through the fear. He wouldn't stand by, a passive observer in his own escape.
Reaching up, Tom grabbed the edge of the vent opening. The metal was cool beneath his fingers, rough from where the grate had been torn off. He hauled himself up, a grunt escaping his lips. His muscles, atrophied from months of limited movement, screamed in protest.
Pushing his head and shoulders into the dark tunnel, he felt the confined space press in around him. Dust motes danced in the faint light filtering from the corridor. The air was stale, metallic, and smelled faintly of something chemical. It was a suffocating, claustrophobic hole, but it was their only way out.
"Come on, Tom!" Rose's voice was a desperate whisper now, laced with urgency. He heard the sizzle of her power, the crackle of burning air.
Gritting his teeth, Tom twisted, trying to get his hips through the narrow opening. His uniform snagged. He kicked, pushing off the wall, forcing his body into the darkness. Every inch was a struggle. His heart hammered against the metal ductwork.
The sounds of battle intensified behind him. Shouts, grunts, the sickening thud of bodies hitting the floor. The rescuer was still holding them off, but the guards were relentless, more appearing from deeper within the facility. He heard the unmistakable roar of Rose’s pyrokinetic abilities.
"Get in!" the masked figure barked, their voice strained, clearly taking a hit. The fight was getting closer, more desperate.
Tom squeezed, pushing with all his might. His vision narrowed to the dark, cramped shaft. He could feel the cold metal against his back, his chest. He was in, halfway through, his legs dangling into the chaotic fight below.
He pulled, clawing at the interior of the vent, desperate to disappear into its depths. He heard Rose’s furious cry as she unleashed a torrent of fire, illuminating the desperate battle behind him. His hands slipped, but he found purchase, and with one final, agonizing heave, he vanished into the black.
