Chapter 6 of 10
Catwalk of Chaos

A collective gasp rippled through the hall, quickly followed by a cacophony of panicked voices. Renzo watched as Fabia’s face, usually composed, contorted with genuine shock. “Stolen? How is that even possible?” she demanded, her gaze darting between Ottavio and Amalia, then settling on Renzo with a renewed, piercing intensity.
Ottavio held up a placating hand, though his eyes burned with an inner fire. “Amalia, mobilize every available asset. Seal the estate. No one leaves, no one enters.” His voice was a low growl, devoid of its usual mellowness. “I want every surveillance feed reviewed, every staff member questioned.”
Amalia nodded, already barking orders into a discreet earpiece. “The network logs show a system override from a remote access point, just minutes before the breach,” she stated, her voice crisp and efficient. “Highly sophisticated. Almost… professional.”
“Professional?” Cipriano Sforzini, his face contorted in a sneer, strode into the room, followed by two other stern-faced Sforzini cousins. “Or perhaps, convenient. Convenient for the interloper who just arrived.” He pointed a accusatory finger at Renzo. “He’s been here, what, a few days? And suddenly our most vital assets vanish. He’s the only variable, the only outsider!”
“Cipriano, that’s a baseless accusation,” Fabia interjected, though her voice lacked its usual conviction, her eyes still holding that questioning glint as she looked at Renzo. The seed of doubt had been planted.
Renzo felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach. He opened his mouth, but no words came. How could he explain the journal, the traitor? It sounded insane.
“A new face, with an unknown agenda,” one of the cousins, a man with a severe haircut and even severer suit, added, his voice dripping with suspicion. “And a sudden, unexpected inheritance. The timing is… suspicious, to say the least.”
Ottavio stepped forward, his expression grave. “We cannot jump to conclusions, but we must investigate all avenues. Renzo, I understand this is difficult, but we need you to cooperate fully.” His gaze was unwavering, a strange mix of sympathy and something sharper that Renzo couldn't quite place.
Before Renzo could respond, another security officer, a burly man named Valerio, burst in, holding a crumpled piece of paper. “Maestro Bellini! We found this in the new guest’s room! Tucked into the lining of his old satchel!” He thrust the paper forward.
Amalia snatched it, her brow furrowed. She scanned the document, then her lips parted fractionally. “It’s a blueprint… a partial diagram of the vault’s access panel. And this… a forged access code, designed to mimic a high-level Sforzini clearance.” She looked up, her gaze hardening on Renzo. “This is a direct bypass for the biometric scanners. Someone on the inside would know precisely where to look for such a weakness.”
Renzo stared at the paper, then at Amalia. A partial schematic. A forged code. His heart plummeted. This was a setup, an elaborate, cruel frame. “That’s not mine!” he protested, his voice cracking. “I’ve never seen that before in my life!”
“Of course not,” Cipriano scoffed. “Criminals always confess immediately, don’t they?”
Suddenly, the entire room shifted. The Sforzini cousins closed in, their faces grim, their Affinities simmering just beneath the surface. He could feel the faint tremor of metal in the air around Cipriano, the subtle pressure as if the very space was being constricted. Valerio and two other guards moved to flank Renzo, their hands resting on the sidearms holstered at their hips.
“Renzo Favero, you are being detained for questioning regarding the theft of House Sforzini’s proprietary designs,” Amalia stated, her voice devoid of warmth. “Do not resist.”
Renzo looked frantically at Fabia, searching for any flicker of the shared moment from Alessio's workshop. Her expression was conflicted, a battle playing out behind her eyes. He saw her jaw tighten, her gaze dart to Ottavio, then back to him. A decision was made.
“Wait!” Fabia’s voice cut through the tension, sharp and clear. “This is preposterous! A partial blueprint? A *forged* code? If someone was truly stealing, they wouldn’t leave such a clumsy, obvious clue in plain sight in the thief’s own room!” She gestured dismissively at the paper in Amalia’s hand. “It screams planted evidence! This whole thing is a distraction from the real culprit, who is clearly still out there, possibly even in this room!”
The accusation hung heavy in the air, aimed subtly at Ottavio, whose genial mask wavered for a split second. All eyes turned to Fabia, momentarily pulling focus from Renzo. It was just an instant, a tiny window, but Renzo caught it. He saw the almost imperceptible nod Fabia gave him, a slight tilt of her head towards the door, a silent command.
This was his chance. Without another thought, Renzo bolted. He shoved past Valerio, who stumbled backward in surprise, and sprinted out of the room, ignoring the shouts that erupted behind him. He heard the thud of heavy boots on the marble as security gave chase, but he didn’t look back.
He ran through the opulent corridors, the words of his late predecessor's journal echoing in his mind: *“Aegis… the true heart of the Sforzini legacy is not just what we make, but where we make it. The Stage itself holds the greatest secrets, the deepest defenses.”* The Stage. The main catwalk. It wasn’t just for fashion; it was a key. But what key?
He burst onto the main catwalk stage, a massive, gleaming expanse of polished obsidian and chrome, already prepped for the evening’s show. Bright spotlights crisscrossed the area, momentarily blinding him. There were a few stagehands making final adjustments, but the press and fashion elite hadn't arrived yet. Not quite.
Then he heard it—a low rumble, a metallic groan from above. He looked up just as Cipriano dropped from the ceiling rafters, a dark, furious silhouette against the harsh lights. His cousin’s eyes glowed with raw hatred, his Affinity roaring to life. Metal shrieked and groaned as Cipriano began to tear the massive overhead lighting trusses, the heavy steel beams, and the intricate scaffolding from their moorings.
“Thief! Imposter!” Cipriano’s voice boomed, amplified by the resonating metal. “You disgrace our name! This is where your pathetic life ends!”
The enormous metal structures, weighing tons, ripped free with deafening screeches, twisting and buckling under Cipriano’s command. They plunged downwards, aimed directly at Renzo, threatening to crush him and anyone else on the stage. The stagehands screamed, scattering in terror, narrowly avoiding the descending debris. Simultaneously, the main entrance doors to the grand hall hissed open, and the first waves of the press and high-profile guests began to filter in, chattering excitedly, their conversation dying in their throats as they saw the unfolding horror.
Renzo didn’t flinch. He didn’t try to run. He just looked up at the torrent of twisted steel descending upon him. The words of Alessio’s journal, his benefactor’s voice, suddenly became crystal clear in his mind: *“The Loom of Fate… it’s not just mending, Renzo. It’s weaving reality itself.”*
A strange calm settled over him. He extended his hands, not in defense, but in a gesture of creation. His Affinity surged, a vibrant, glowing energy that pulsed from his fingertips. He didn't push the metal away; he embraced it. He saw the molecular structure of the plunging steel, the way the atoms intertwined, the subtle energies holding them together. He saw them as threads, coarse and unyielding, but threads nonetheless.
With a silent command, a surge of pure will, Renzo began to ‘stitch’. He unravelled the destructive momentum of the collapsing metal, weaving new connections, new bonds. The massive steel beams, instead of crashing, slowed, paused in mid-air, then began to twist and contort, not in destructive force, but in intricate, deliberate curves. The harsh, cold metal softened, shimmering with an inner light, becoming pliable and fluid in his grasp.
He caught the first colossal truss, then the next, and the next, manipulating them with effortless grace. The tumbling wreckage, moments before a death trap, transformed. It spun and arced, twisting into magnificent, flowing drapes of metallic fabric, catching the stage lights and refracting them into a blinding spectrum of colors. Jagged edges smoothed into elegant folds. Crushing weight became delicate, ethereal waves. The deafening screeches subsided into a soft, melodic hum.
The entire runway, the stage where death was meant to occur, became a canvas. The twisted, broken scaffolding coalesced into a breathtaking, shimmering sculpture of metallic cloth, rising from the stage like a fantastical, ever-changing gown. It was a fusion of industrial strength and gossamer beauty, proving a power beyond comprehension.
Cipriano, still suspended in the rafters, stared down, his eyes wide with a horror that transcended even his hatred. The arriving crowd, initially frozen in terror, now whispered in awe. Cameras flashed, not in panic, but in frantic capture of an impossible, spontaneous art installation. Renzo stood at the heart of it all, bathed in the iridescent glow of his creation, his hands still raised, a silent, powerful maestro conducting a symphony of transformed steel, as Fabia Sforzini burst through the main doors, locking her gaze upon the impossible sight.
