Chapter 5 of 10
Designs of a Traitor

The air in the workshop, usually thick with the ghosts of forgotten projects, now crackled with a fragile understanding. He had journeyed to Bellanza solely because of an engraved pendant and a cryptic text message. Yet this hidden chamber, Alessio's profound sketches, and the quiet tension in Fabia's posture signaled stakes far grander than sheer wealth.
“Alessio,” Renzo said, his voice firming, “didn’t just design clothes. He engineered solutions. He unlocked new facets of our bloodline gifts. If he saw rot within Sforzini operations, he intended to cure it.” Renzo's usual sunny outlook stiffened into iron resolve. This legacy of daring innovation felt like a trust placed directly into his palms.
Fabia turned from the wall, a flicker of curiosity replacing the gloom. “Fix it how? The Sforzinis are an institution. You don’t ‘fix’ a dynasty, Renzo. You endure it.”
“Maybe,” Renzo countered, lifting the celestial silk pendant from the mahogany table. Its smooth, cool metal weighed heavily in his hand. “Or maybe you find out why it needs fixing in the first place.” He inspected the engraved casing. The luminous filament patterns still pulsed faintly under the silver skin, sparking an innate hum against his fingertips. It wasn’t just about mending a torn seam anymore. It was about *seeing* how things were put together, and how they could be taken apart.
He concentrated on the casing, not to mend, but to *unravel*. Tracing the microscopic lattices holding the alloy together, he guided his power in reverse. A muted glow washed over his fingers, and with a clean snap, the capsule split along a concealed seam, both halves separating cleanly in his palm. Nestled within, against a bed of velvet, lay a tiny, almost ethereal data chip, no bigger than a fingernail clipping.
Fabia gasped, stepping closer. “What… how did you do that? It was a solid piece of alloy! Alessio commissioned it with a specialized weld. No one opens it without an induction torch.”
Renzo offered a modest grin. “Just had to tease out the key strand, I suppose.” He carefully plucked the chip from its resting place. “This must be what the message was talking about.”
Returning to the main design studio, they found a secure interface panel embedded in a polished onyx desk. Renzo inserted the tiny chip into a slot. The screen flickered to life, displaying a single file: ‘Alessio Favero – Private Journal. Access Restricted.’
“Favero?” Fabia murmured, her brow furrowing. “He always used Sforzini for everything official. Why…?”
“Maybe for things that weren’t official,” Renzo suggested, his thumb hovering over the ‘Open’ prompt. “Things he didn’t want the Sforzini name attached to.” He pressed the button. Pages of text scrolled rapidly, a detailed, meticulously kept journal.
*Entry 173, Cycle 44, Day 12:* Renzo read aloud, his voice low. *“The whispers grow louder. Another production delay at the Bellari Weavers. Their ancient looms, supposedly indestructible, suffered ‘catastrophic structural failure.’ Odd, considering their chief engineer, Silvano, just last week assured me of their peak condition. Too many ‘accidents’ lately.”*
Fabia gripped the edge of the desk. “The Bellari incident? They dismissed it as a freak power surge. It crippled a quarter of the autumn production.”
Renzo scrolled further. *“Entry 198, Cycle 45, Day 3: The Perennial Gardens blight. Our new radiant-fiber cultivation, engineered to resist every known blight, withered overnight. Amalia’s report claimed a new, unknown fungal strain. Yet, the adjacent fields, using standard methods, remained untouched. A targeted strike, not a natural phenomenon.”*
“That radiant fiber was supposed to revolutionize our evening wear,” Fabia murmured, her knuckles whitening against the onyx. “It threw our seasonal release back years.”
Renzo continued, the playful wonder draining from his face, replaced by a growing grimness. *“Entry 221, Cycle 46, Day 19: The numbers from the ‘Rialto Acquisition’ don’t add up. The valuation was deliberately inflated, the assets strategically stripped before the transfer. Ottavio assured me it was merely a miscalculation. A miscalculation that cost the House nearly a tenth of its liquid capital. This is not misfortune. This is deliberate sabotage. Orchestrated by someone close. Someone with deep knowledge of our vulnerabilities.”*
Fabia stiffened. “Ottavio? He’s been with the family for decades. He was my father’s most trusted advisor!”
Renzo’s gaze sharpened. “Trusted, maybe. But my father suspected otherwise.” He scrolled to the final entries, his eyes scanning quickly. *“I’ve begun a counter-project. A defensive matrix, not just of textiles, but of encrypted files and operational security. I call it ‘Aegis.’ It will expose internal treason, protect the House, and safeguard our real heritage. The key lies in expanding our hereditary capabilities beyond archaic dogma. It is dangerous, but our family requires an unyielding shield.”*
Renzo looked up, a knot forming in his stomach. Alessio had operated as a sentinel, charting the sabotage that plagued their opulent compound. The disasters weren't random. A saboteur was systemically dismantling the Sforzini empire, fiber by fiber.
Before Renzo could speak, a piercing, high-pitched alarm blared, echoing through the sprawling estate. The blare sliced straight through the quiet chamber. A frantic voice, distorted by static, squawked over the intercom system: “Vault breach! Main vault has been compromised! Repeat, main vault has been—” The transmission cut off abruptly.
Footsteps thundered down the hall. Ottavio Bellini burst through the double doors, his usually genial posture replaced by taut alarm. His eyes, usually so warm, now held a cold, hard glint that sent a prickle down Renzo’s arms. Amalia Veronesi, Head of Security, appeared behind him, her expression a mask of professional alarm. “What is going on?” Fabia demanded, her voice tight with tension.
Ottavio’s gaze swept over Renzo, then the screen displaying Alessio’s journal. A flicker of calculation darted across his features before hardening into solemn authority. “The worst, I’m afraid,” he announced, his voice low and heavy, sending a chill through the air. “The schematics for the entire upcoming fashion line, the very heart of our next season… they’ve been stolen.”
