Chapter 2 of 10
Symphony of Fear

The secure testing chamber hummed with contained force, a circular arena of polished obsidian walls and shimmering rune-etched floors. Above, behind reinforced aether-glass, Leena Solara watched, her expression a careful blend of disdain and sharp scrutiny. Beside her, a grim-faced proctor clutched a data slate, ready to record Juhan’s inevitable failure. Below, in the center of the arena, Juhan stood with his three F-rankers.
“Alright, listen closely,” Juhan’s voice, though calm, cut through the nervous silence of the recruits. “Kaius, you will take the center. Your gift, 'Ironfall Brute,' makes you a beacon of raw power. For this exercise, you will do nothing. Absolutely nothing. Stand still. Do not move a muscle, do not trigger your gift, do not even flinch.”
Kaius, his knuckles already pale, visibly wrestled with the order. His broad shoulders twitched under his rough uniform. “Instructor, with all due respect, a Gloom Hound is fast. If I just stand—”
“You stand,” Juhan interrupted, his gaze unyielding. “Ott, you will position yourself near the south wall. Begin channeling your 'Aegis Bloom' spell. Not to cast it, but to prepare it. Hold it at the precipice of release. Don’t worry if it feels unstable. That’s precisely what we need.”
Ott, a lanky boy with perpetually wide eyes, wrung his hands. His healing trait, 'Vitality Weave,' was known for its explosive, unpredictable surges when pushed. “But sir, if I hold it too long, it could… well, it could shatter the floor again.”
“Good,” Juhan said, a faint tilt to his head. “Eevi. You will activate your 'Shadow Veils' trait the moment the rift opens. Stay invisible. Do not make a sound, do not move unless I tell you. Your role is observation.”
Eevi, a wisp of a girl who looked ready to bolt, nodded, her presence already fading at the edges. Her shroud granted complete invisibility, a flawless concealment, yet she always drew attention through sheer fright.
Leena scoffed from the observation deck. “He’s sending them in blind. And Kaius, the only one with any offensive capability, is to do nothing? This is sheer incompetence.”
Below, the air thickened. A fissure, black as pitch, tore itself open in the center of the arena, spitting out wisps of frigid, shimmering darkness. The raw, distorted howl of a beast echoed from within. The Rift pulsed.
[ Dimensional Incursion: Echo Rift (Rank F) Opened! ]
A creature slithered out. A Gloom Hound. Its hide was mottled grey, its limbs too long, too thin, ending in wickedly sharp talons. Its head was eyeless, smooth, dominated by an elongated snout that twitched, sensing the world through unseen means. It emitted a low, guttural snarl that seemed to vibrate in the very bones.
Kaius, a pillar of simmering rage, stood frozen as commanded. The Gloom Hound, however, did not acknowledge him. It swept its featureless head, sniffing the air, then turned, unnervingly, directly towards the south wall where Eevi had melted into nothingness.
Juhan’s memories screamed at him. *Gloom Hounds hunt by scent, by heat.* But this one… it was ignoring Kaius, a walking furnace of F-rank power. It was heading straight for Eevi, whose veil was supposed to suppress all physical emanations, including scent and heat. Juhan's past life knowledge, a meticulously cataloged database of fiend behaviors, was suddenly, dangerously, incomplete.
Eevi, despite her absolute concealment, shivered. A barely perceptible tremor, but enough for Juhan to see the faintest ripple in the distorted light around her. The Gloom Hound twitched its head again, its snout pointing directly at the source of that minute disturbance. It didn't see her. It *heard* her.
[ Target Acquired: Eevi ]
Above, Leena gripped her binoculars. “The creature is ignoring Kaius! What is it doing?”
The Gloom Hound lunged, not at empty air, but precisely at the spot where Eevi stood. Her cry stayed locked behind clenched teeth, but Juhan could see her crouch, her hands coming up in a useless defensive gesture. One of the hound’s talons scraped the air inches from where her face would be, a whisper of death.
Juhan didn't hesitate. From a pouch at his waist, he produced a small, unassuming stone, no bigger than his thumb. It was dark, rough, and threaded with faint, almost invisible crystalline veins. With a flick of his wrist, he hurled it. The stone arced, striking the obsidian wall with a sharp *ping* that resonated, not just through the chamber, but deep within the Gloom Hound’s form. A high-pitched, almost inaudible *whine* emanated from the stone, a precise, calculated frequency.
The hound recoiled, a shriek tearing from its throat, its eyeless head snapping towards the sound. It stumbled back from Eevi, momentarily disoriented. The stone, Juhan knew, was keyed to the creature's true sensory organs – its sound receptors, a weakness absent from his previous life’s data.
“Eevi!” Juhan’s voice cracked like a whip. “Don’t fight it! Don’t run randomly! Use your fear! Guide it towards Ott! Make it chase you!”
Leena stiffened against the railing. “He’s using her panic as bait! That’s insane!”
Eevi, adrenaline coursing, understood. Her fear, usually a paralyzing weight, now became a compass. She darted, not wildly, but with a deliberate, trembling path, drawing the snarling Gloom Hound after her. The hound, its internal frequency still disrupted by the stone’s hum, followed the escalating, sharp vibration of her frantic pulse, a beacon in its sound-sensitive world.
“Ott! Now! Release it!” Juhan shouted, his voice sharp and clear above the snarls and the faint whine from the stone.
Ott, sweating, his face contorted with effort, thrust his hands forward. The 'Aegis Bloom' spell, usually a gentle emerald glow, erupted from his palms like a volatile, blinding flash of pure jade light. It slammed into the obsidian floor, not a focused blast, but a spreading, unstable surge of raw healing power.
[ Aegis Bloom: Unstable Overload! ]
The floor shuddered. The uncontrolled influx of restorative power, meant for organic tissue, reacted violently with the inert mineral. Cracks spiderwebbed outwards from the impact point. The Gloom Hound, lured by Eevi’s fear, stumbled into the radiating field of overcharged Vitality Weave. The ground beneath its feet didn’t just crack; it began to crystallize, hardening, solidifying with unnatural speed. The hound's long, gangly legs, caught mid-stride, became encased in jagged, emerald formations. It howled, thrashing, but the hardening process was swift, unforgiving. Its legs, then its lower torso, were locked in a vise of petrified mineral.
It was immobilized. Trapped.
“Kaius!” Juhan’s voice was calm, almost conversational. “Finish it.”
Kaius, who had stood motionless throughout the pursuit, moved. One massive stride. His fist, imbued with the nascent force of his 'Ironfall Brute' Aspect, slammed down. Not into the head, not into the chest, but into the crystalline prison encasing the hound. The emerald formations shattered, and with them, the beast’s legs. A single, guttural moan escaped the Gloom Hound as its upper body slumped, lifeless.
[ Gloom Hound Eliminated! ]
[ Echo Rift Stabilized! ]
The arena fell silent. The F-rankers stared, first at the fallen beast, then at Juhan. Kaius flexed his hand, a strange mix of exhilaration and confusion on his face. Ott stared at the fractured, glowing floor where his spell had mutated reality. Eevi, still barely visible, slowly materialized, staring ahead with dawning comprehension.
Leena lowered her binoculars, her hand trembling faintly. She pressed both palms flat against the cold viewing panel. The proctor beside her simply stared, his data slate forgotten. The silence stretched, thick with implications.
“How did he know,” Leena whispered, her voice barely audible, “about the resonance frequency of Gloom Hounds?”
