Chapter 8 of 10
The Damage Cap

The UI borders flashed crimson, stripping every tool icon down to slate-gray boxes. Varnar sucked in ash-choked sulfur, feeling neither the canvas pouch at his hip nor the familiar seed count on his peripheral HUD. A bare numeric integer sat pinned in the top left: 1/1.
[WARNING: ABNORMAL CLASS REVOCATION. SYSTEM REBOOT PENDING.]
Nymira, ever vigilant, was at his side in an instant, her hand a cool, dry weight on his arm. “They took your class,” she stated, her voice devoid of emotion, yet her grip possessive. “No matter. You are still my target. Alive.” She glanced up the fractured switchback, where blighted initiates climbed with jagged, viridian-lit gauntlets toward the summit.
Zosima, who had been staring at the now useless void where Varnar’s class icon used to be, finally snapped her gaze to him. Her scowl deepened into pure disgust. “One hit,” she muttered, tightening her grip on her serrated broadsword. “A stray spark deletes you? Ridiculous.” A hulking brute, coated in oily static and swinging a notched tower bulwark, bounded downward, its nameplate flickering: 'Blighted Enforcer – Elite'.
“Keep moving,” Varnar rasped, pointing toward the caldera’s ridge where green data streams spiked in rhythmic bursts. “Othrys has the tether anchored at the apex. If the path has sheared away, we climb the geometry.”
“Easy to say from the baggage slot,” Zosima snapped. She carved through two flanking cadets with a sweeping backhand strike, cracking the basalt ledge underfoot, while Nymira flicked an ivory stilettos into a third throat.
“Stow him,” Zosima ordered. She hoisted Varnar by his linen collar and dropped him across Nymira’s leather harness. The assassin absorbed the momentum without shifting a boot. Ignis dug tiny talons into Varnar’s collar, wheezing nervous sparks into the wind.
Twisted seniors choked the narrow switchback, their polygon meshes stretching awkwardly along unrendered seams. Zosima drove through them in a flurry of iron chops, while Nymira sidestepped wildly animated lunges with Varnar slung across her back.
“Left flank, heavy vanguard!” Varnar shouted over the wind. “Lure the tackle into the basalt outcrop!” Zosima stepped aside at the last second, letting the charging vanguard crash headlong into the column. “Nymira, behind it—seventeen frames of uncancelable recovery on the whiff!” Nymira dropped behind the target and drove steel between its vertebrae.
Sulfur stung Varnar's throat as a hulking sentry dropped from an upper tier, iron plating welded directly into its hide. Zosima met the leap with an overhead cut. Steel met enchanted iron with a deafening ring, and the heavy broadsword snapped in half, showering the volcanic crag in dull gray fragments. Zosima stumbled backward as the armored bulk raised a spiked pavise for an execution slam.
“Useless scrap,” Zosima hissed, staring at the jagged stub of steel in her grip.
“Drop the weapon!” Varnar shouted, his voice cracking. “Remember the Crimson Thistle sequence! Unarmed recovery frames! Chain the inputs!”
She tossed the broken hilt aside. Weapon swings carried forced wind-up animations; bare palms did not.
When the pavise began its downward arc, Zosima drove her bare knuckles forward. A stuttering flurry of palm strikes rattled the metal, each impact snapping the visual recovery cycle into a fresh forward jab. *Crack-crack-crack-crack.* The animation rig jittered violently, unable to complete a single recoil tick. The sentry locked up in hit-stun, its green health bar dumping whole percentages per millisecond.
[DAMAGE OVERFLOW DETECTED. SERVER INTEGRITY COMPROMISED.]
[DAMAGE CAP SURPASSED. INSTANCE: ZOSIMA. WARNING: EXCEEDING EXPECTED PARAMETERS.]
With a sharp audio tear, the sentry failed to trigger a death ragdoll. The entire wireframe popped out of memory, leaving only a scattered puff of gray despawn smoke on the ledge.
Zosima rolled her shoulders, inspecting her split knuckles with a grim smirk. “Zero cooldown on unequipped strikes. So that is your trick.”
They crested the upper lip of the caldera, shoes crunching against glassy obsidian slag. The heat was suffocating, smelling of fried copper and burned hair.
Magister Othrys stood beside a shuddering monolith of lime-green code—the primary server tether. Facing outward with vacant, glass-smooth pupils was Gallio, gripping the heavy pommel of the Blade of Aegis in a stiff, unblinking idle pose.
“Varnar,” Othrys said, gesturing smoothly with an open palm. “Punctual as ever. Your fellow initiate provides an impenetrable defense. The primary quest entity is quite immortal, after all. His routine simply required a slight redirect.”
Gallio took a rigid step forward, raising the golden blade toward Varnar's chest. With zero inventory, zero skills, and a single point of vitality, Varnar had no physics exploit left to buffer.
