Chapter 7 of 10
Patch Notes and Pathfinding

The firmament shrieked, a sound of rending code, as Othrys’s guttural laughter faded into the roar of a thousand-year-old volcano. The very air tasted of brimstone and glitching static. Below the blood-soaked sky, the Chalkis Schola, usually a bastion of brutal order, became a frenetic arena of primal panic. Students, previously focused on their daily quotas of Scoria-Beast fangs, scattered like iron filings from a magnet. The crimson light revealed horrors previously confined to endgame zones: towering, chitinous Grawl-Fiends burst from the caldera’s smoking vents, their multi-jointed legs clicking on the obsidian-paved courtyard. Fissures erupted along the academy walls, spewing forth torrents of glowing, acid-spewing Gloom-Sprinters. The air vibrated with the screams of the unprepared. Varnar stared at the [WORLD DELETION SCRIPT: 24 HOURS REMAINING] banner pinning itself across his vision as memories from his QA cubicle surfaced.
He was hunched over a flickering monitor, the acrid scent of cheap coffee and stale pizza clinging to his uniform. The monitor displayed a cascade of hexadecimal errors, a fluorescent waterfall of mangled code. “Project Chimera World Instance 7, Build 0.9.3. Initiating wipe sequence due to unhandled exception in core environment parsing. Trigger event: ‘Botanist class instance attempting to root global collision mesh into non-Euclidean space.’ Estimated runtime: 336 hours. Error Code: 0xDEADBEEF.” His supervisor, a man named Kaelus with eyes perpetually narrowed from lack of sleep, had slammed a hand on his desk. “Varnar! What in the blazes did you do? You just deleted the *entire build*!” Varnar, then a junior QA tester, stammered, “I just planted a daisy in the starter zone, sir! A tiny, decorative daisy! I think it… broke the world.” Kaelus’s face turned purple. “Broke the world? You found a way to trigger the emergency deletion protocol with a *flower*? That’s not a bug, Varnar, that’s a server-killer! Get out! You’re fired!” He had been so proud, then, of finding such a catastrophic flaw. Now, he was living it. The same bug, the same purge protocol, only this time he stood inside the simulation. And Othrys was a hell of a lot more dangerous than Kaelus.
[WARNING: UNPLANNED MONSTER SPAWN EVENT. THREAT LEVEL: CATASTROPHIC.]
“Hold your ground!” Gallio bellowed, his voice straining to be heard over the cacophony. He stood before a particularly monstrous Grawl-Fiend, its carapaced hide shimmering with heat, its maw dripping corrosive ichor. The 'Hero of Justice' swung his oversized, ornate greataxe, ‘Truth’s Edge,’ in a wide, sweeping arc. The blow connected with a dull thud, barely scratching the brute's armored leg. The beast, designed to chew through parties of level 80 players, responded by rearing back and slamming its massive foreleg down. The ground cracked, sending Gallio tumbling, his naive, righteous fury doing little against raw, unscripted power. He managed to scramble away, but another leg was already descending, targeting his prone form with bone-shattering force.
[GALLIO (NPC) CRITICAL HEALTH ALERT!]
Varnar’s vision tunneled. Gallio, for all his idiocy, was still tethered to the main questline. Losing him here would be a catastrophic sequence break, but not the kind he wanted. The Grawl-Fiend’s leg was inches from Gallio’s head. Varnar couldn’t reach him, couldn’t throw a sapling, couldn’t pull off any of his usual shenaningans. He clenched his fists, helpless.
Then, a blur. A whisper of movement faster than a rendered frame. Nymira, a shadow among shadows, had materialized on the Grawl-Fiend’s back. Not just on its back, but *between* its segmented armor plates, a space so impossibly small it could only be a glitch. She moved with impossible precision, a dance of pure code. She plunged her dagger, not into the beast’s flesh, but into a tiny seam where its chitin met its neck, a junction that pulsed with jagged packet leaks. It was the exact spot Varnar had shown her during their first, bizarre encounter – a point where the creature’s pathfinding AI suffered a minor hiccup, leading to a fractional, millisecond-long unrendered hit-box.
“Pathing nullified,” Nymira murmured, her voice a low purr, almost lost in the din. The Grawl-Fiend shuddered. It didn’t bleed, it merely *decompiled*. Its massive form disintegrated into a shower of red error messages and shattered polygons, leaving behind a single, glowing ‘Grawl Core’ drop. Nymira landed silently beside the stunned Gallio, her gaze flicking briefly to the fallen hero before returning to Varnar. “You taught me well, Master Glitch.” She held up the Grawl Core. “One-hit-kill, just as you predicted.”
[ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: ‘EXPLOITING THE EXPLOITER’S EXPLOIT’ – 500 MERIT.]
Static prickled Varnar's skin. Nymira had perfectly weaponized his lesson. The path to Othrys, however, remained impassable. He looked up, past the swirling red sky, to the spire of the Obsidian Citadel, Othrys’s personal sanctum, which overlooked the Schola from the caldera’s highest peak. That’s where the server tether was. But the staircases were rubble, the bridges vaporized by the monster spawns, and the walls were now infested with sentient, gravity-defying Spire-Weavers. There was no direct path, no normal way to ascend.
“We need to get to Othrys,” Varnar stated, his gaze fixed on the pinnacle. Zosima, her gauntlets still dripping with the viscous goo of a Splinter-Brute, nodded grimly. “The old fool is trying to delete us all. But how? The ascent is broken. It’s a sheer climb now, even for a gladiator.”
Varnar looked down at Ignis, the baby dragon, who was currently gnawing happily on a piece of shattered masonry, completely oblivious to the chaos. The dragon let out a small, contented burp, a puff of smoke curling from its nostrils. Varnar stared at the lizard's throat. Ignis’s breath attack… it had a unique, unlisted property. A tiny, almost imperceptible upwards vector force. If he could chain that…
“Ignis,” Varnar said, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across his face. “How much do you like flying?”
He scooped up the baby dragon, ignoring its confused squeak, and ran to the nearest sheer wall of the caldera. He could see the path now, a bizarre, vertical sequence break. He took a deep breath, clutching Ignis tightly.
[WARNING: EXCESSIVE VIOLATIONS DETECTED. ARBORIST CLASS INSTANCE 001 – VARNAR – RECALIBRATED.]
[ARBORIST CLASS STATUS: REVOKED.]
[NEW CLASS: CIVILIAN.]
[STATISTICS ADJUSTED: HEALTH – 1 HP. DAMAGE – 0. MANA – 0. LEVEL – 1.]
Varnar stumbled, nearly dropping Ignis. His UI shimmered, the green health bar shrinking to a sliver of red, his class icon replaced by a generic grey silhouette. The world spun. He was a Level 1 Civilian. With 1 HP.
