Chapter 7 of 10

The Grandmaster's Greed

1.3k words

Mellina’s mind raced, a frantic hummingbird beating against glass. Terminal Humoral Degeneration. Three to six months. Her accidental spill. *Unexpected stabilization.* This wasn't just about Zareo's pride, or her comfortable, quiet life. This was about his life, now tethered to her bizarre, clumsy interventions. The cold stone floor seemed to vibrate with the sheer injustice of it. Her breath caught, not in feigned shock, but in genuine, piercing realization. Zareo hadn't been testing her; he'd been dying. And she, in her carefully constructed airhead guise, had stumbled into being his unwitting cure. The heavy doors of the Grand Vaults, where the guards had taken him, seemed to mock her with their impenetrable silence. Her 'airhead' mask, once a shield, now felt like a smothering shroud. “No more,” she whispered, the words rasping in her throat. Her eyes, usually wide with feigned innocence, hardened into flint. She would find a permanent solution. She had to. But where to start? The Guild’s private records repository was a labyrinth of forgotten knowledge, locked tighter than a vault, accessible only to High Council members. The only way in, for someone without the proper clearance, was through the ventilation shafts. And for that, she’d need help. Just then, a flash of tawny fur zipped past her ankle, followed by a smaller, cream-colored streak. Brim, her loyal nectar-glider, chittered excitedly, nudging a tiny, delicate glider, his new mate, toward her. Sylphia, Mellina had named her, for her graceful, almost ethereal flight. Sylphia blinked her large, amber eyes, then chirped a question at Brim, who responded with an emphatic squeak, pointing his tiny nose toward the towering records wing. It seemed Brim had already anticipated her need. Her own little infiltration squad. Mellina offered them a rare, genuine smile, a flash of determination in her features that had been kept quiet for years. “Alright, little bandits,” Mellina murmured, scooping them both into her arms, their soft fur a comforting warmth against her cheek. “Operation Cure Zareo is a go.” Under the cloak of the midday meal break, Mellina scaled the outer wall of the records wing with practiced ease, her movements fluid and silent. Years of precarious climbs in search of rare flora had honed her agility. She found a loose grate, prised it open with a well-placed hairpin, and ushered Brim and Sylphia inside. “Find the deepest, dustiest sections,” she instructed them softly, pointing to a schematic she’d sketched on a discarded parchment. “Look for any ledgers, any journals that smell of ancient herbs and desperate measures. Something Zareo would have missed, something too obscure for a quick search.” The gliders vanished into the darkness, their chitters echoing faintly as they navigated the narrow passages. Mellina waited, her heart thrumming a restless rhythm. Minutes stretched into an eternity. Then, a faint *thump* from within the wall, followed by a triumphant chirp. Mellina quickly repositioned the grate and slipped inside, descending into the cool, musty air of the forgotten knowledge stacks. The gliders sat proudly atop a stack of leather-bound folios, a particularly thick, stained volume open to a page with familiar script. Mellina caught her tongue. This wasn't the Guild’s formal hand. It was Zareo’s, younger, less polished, but undeniably his. Her fingers trembled as she turned the pages of the journal, dated nearly a decade prior. It detailed a massive blight, a plague that had swept through Vespira’s orphanages, turning the children into living husks. Zareo, then a fledgling scent-warden, had risked everything, venturing into the forbidden Mire-Bogs to find an antidote, a rare, toxic bloom known as the ‘Weeper’s Wisp.’ The cure had worked, saving countless lives, including, Mellina realized with a sudden, aching twist in her gut, her own. She remembered vague, feverish dreams of a shadowy figure, a tall presence with a kind voice, bringing her a bitter-smelling brew. He had saved her. And in doing so, he had contracted the curse. The Weeper’s Wisp, while a potent cure, had left an insidious, terminal residue within him. The truth hit her with the force of a physical blow. The aloof, stoic Magistrate, the man she’d so carefully avoided, was the stranger who had given her a second chance at life. She flipped further, her eyes scanning for any mention of a counter-agent, a permanent solution. And there it was, tucked away in the very last entry, written in a different, more recent hand: *‘The Guildmaster’s Edict: The only known counter-agent for Weeper’s Wisp residue – the Sun-root sap – is to be placed under permanent sequestration. Its existence is to remain unrecorded in public logs. Use is restricted to members of the High Council, at the Guildmaster’s sole discretion.’* A cold, predatory rage bloomed in Mellina’s chest. The Guildmaster had known all along. He had the cure, and he had stashed it, using Zareo’s terminal condition as leverage, a silent threat to keep him in line. It was a vile, cynical betrayal. “He knew,” Mellina breathed, the words laced with fury. “All this time, he knew.” Before she could process the depths of this depravity, a high-pitched, manic giggle echoed through the silent chamber. Mellina whirled around. Ovelia stood there, her hair disheveled, her eyes blazing with an unsettling intensity. But it wasn't just Ovelia. Around her head, the air seemed to shimmer, fractured into jagged, purple lines, like broken glass. Text boxes, visible only to Ovelia, Mellina realized with a chill, were flickering in and out of existence, distorting the reality around her. [Warning: Luck Point Deficit Critical! Immediate Sabotage Mandated!] [Penalty Imminent: Humiliation Quotient Exceeded. Initiate Stage 3 Retribution.] Ovelia’s gaze, wild and unfocused, landed on Mellina. “You!” she shrieked, her voice grating. “You always ruin things! My points! My luck! You just… you just stand there, with your stupid, placid face, and everything goes your way! It’s not fair! It’s all stolen! Every single point!” She lunged forward, her hand outstretched as if to claw something invisible from Mellina’s aura. Mellina instinctively recoiled, her mind racing, trying to categorize this erratic behavior. A complete mental collapse, perhaps brought on by the stress of the last few days? The flickering distortions around Ovelia’s head were clearly a severe hallucination, a sign of a mind breaking under pressure. “Ovelia, calm down,” Mellina said, her voice gentle, attempting to soothe the distraught woman. “What are you talking about? Nothing’s stolen.” “Liar!” Ovelia screamed, her face contorting into a mask of pure madness. “It’s *my* destiny! You took it! You took every scrap!” She stumbled back, her hand fumbling at a concealed panel on the stone wall. A red light pulsed. Mellina stepped back. That was the emergency lockdown sequence. Before she could move, Ovelia slammed her palm against the panel. A deafening *clang* reverberated through the vast space as heavy blast doors hissed shut, sealing the chamber in an instant. The air grew thick, humid, and a faint, acrid scent began to permeate the air. Ovelia’s laugh echoed, chillingly devoid of humor. “Now, let’s see how lucky you are, Mellina. Try to breathe your way out of this one.” Greenish spores, fine as dust, began to drift from hidden vents in the ceiling, twirling lazily in the sudden, dim light. Oxygen-eating security spores. The Guildmaster’s ultimate deterrent for trespassers, designed to slowly, agonizingly suffocate anyone trapped within. Mellina lunged for the doors, hammering on the unyielding metal, but it was useless. Ovelia merely watched, a deranged smile playing on her lips, as the spores intensified, swirling around Mellina, already beginning to steal the precious air from her lungs. She spun, searching frantically for an escape, her vision blurring as the world began to close in.
