Chapter 6 of 10
The Magistrate's Sacrifice
1.2k words
“Arrest her!” the Grandmaster bellowed, his voice echoing through the stunned silence. “The one who used forbidden heat-magic! Arrest her immediately!”
Mellina blinked, a slow, bewildered flutter of lashes. Her gaze drifted from the Grandmaster’s contorted face to the two automatons, then back to the precious Moon-Orchids, now shimmering with a residual warmth. She frowned, a delicate crease between her brows, as if struggling to comprehend the accusation. Heat-magic? What on earth was that? She had only been trying to warm her chilly hands.
From the corner of her eye, Mellina saw Ovelia stir on the damp flagstones, a low moan escaping her lips. The localized shower still lashed at her, making her dark hair cling to her face. Mellina felt a pang of pity, despite the earlier hostility. Ovelia looked utterly wretched, her face chalk-white, her body trembling.
The Guildmaster stepped further into the glasshouse, his silk robes rustling, sweeping his gaze across the artisans frozen in place. “Who was it?” he demanded, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. “The use of Elemental Weaving is a capital offense, a transgression against the very balance of the humors. Confess now, and perhaps mercy may be found.”
No one spoke. Pungent vinegar humors drifted from cracked vials on the workbenches. Mellina chewed on her lower lip, considering her options. She could play utterly innocent, feign ignorance of any magic whatsoever, a mere apothecary assistant lost in the vastness of the Guild. It would be convincing. Her usual strategy. But the automatons were already advancing, their metallic steps deliberate, their optical sensors glowing with an ominous crimson.
Ovelia pushed herself up, swaying precariously. Her eyes, though clouded with pain, found Mellina. A flicker of triumph, raw and desperate, ignited within them. She raised a shaky arm, her finger quivering. “It… it was Mellina,” she rasped, her voice hoarse from the lingering migraine. “She… she did it! The orchids, she… she made them hot!”

A weak, triumphant smile touched Ovelia’s lips, quickly replaced by a wince as the raincloud above her intensified, a cruel twist of the knife. But she had done it. Finally, she had landed a blow.
The automatons pivoted, their metallic forms turning towards Mellina. The Guildmaster narrowed his gaze, pinning her under an icy stare. Mellina’s mind raced, calculating probabilities, potential escape routes, and alibis. She could blame it on a faulty thermostatic charm, a spontaneous botanical reaction. Something innocuous. Something that fit her established character. It was almost foolproof.
Before she could part her lips, an even, resonant baritone cut across the aisle. “It was I.”
Everyone turned toward Zareo. He stood upright, dark tunic singed by earlier spores, expression calm. His gaze met Mellina’s, a silent message passing between them – a promise, a protective wall erecting itself around her. Mellina’s heart gave a strange lurch. He was doing it. He was sacrificing himself.
“I used the heat-weaving,” Zareo stated, his voice calm, unflinching. “The orchids were dying, Grandmaster. A rare specimen. I made a choice.”
The Guildmaster stared, outrage replaced by genuine shock. “Zareo? Impossible! You, an officer of balance, dabbling in forbidden heat? Your record is pristine.”
“Even a clean record gives way to necessity,” Zareo replied, never looking away. “I take full responsibility. Mellina here was merely startled when the air warmed. A new artisan, easily flustered. She had no involvement.”
Mellina felt a surge of complex emotions – gratitude, confusion, a strange, undeniable warmth spreading through her chest. This wasn’t part of her plan. This was entirely *his* plan. And it was going to cost him everything.
Ovelia gasped, her eyes wide with disbelief and rage. “No! That’s a lie! It was her! The system… it said…!” she shrieked, pointing frantically at Mellina, then at Zareo.

The air around Ovelia crackled. A sharp, violent gust whipped through the glasshouse, rattling the panes. Then, with a deafening *CRACK* of thunder, a torrential downpour erupted directly over Ovelia. It wasn’t just a raincloud anymore; it was a furious, localized thunderstorm, complete with lightning flashes that briefly illuminated the terror on her face. Ovelia screamed, a raw, animal sound, as the icy water plastered her to the ground, lightning striking perilously close to her. She thrashed, clawing at the empty air, shouting incoherent curses at an unseen entity. “No! Not *that*! I didn’t… I didn’t help them! You’re wrong! You’re wrong!”
Mellina watched, utterly bewildered. Ovelia was soaked to the bone, convulsing on the ground, seemingly battling an invisible assailant. The Grandmaster, equally perplexed, simply stared at the bizarre spectacle. He had never witnessed anything like it.
“Silence her!” the Guildmaster snapped, gesturing impatiently at the mechanical sentries, who hesitated before the thrashing woman. He turned back to Zareo, his face hardening. “Magistrate, your confession is noted. Your sacrifice, while commendable in its intent to protect another, cannot be overlooked. The laws of Vespira are absolute.”
He slowly reached out, his hand hovering over the silver crest pinned to Zareo’s tunic – the Magistrate’s badge, intricately carved with the symbol of the Solantri Guild. With a sharp tug, he ripped it free. The sound of rending fabric tore through the quiet after the localized storm ceased, leaving Ovelia weeping in a puddle.
“You are stripped of your rank, effective immediately,” the elder declared, flat and cold. “The Royal Guard will escort you to the Citadel’s holding cells. Your trial will be held at dawn.”
The two automatons, their crimson optics now fixed on Zareo, moved with chilling efficiency. One gripped his arm, the other stepped behind him. Zareo’s eyes found Mellina’s again, a fleeting, almost imperceptible nod. He did not struggle. He merely allowed himself to be turned, his back to her, and led away.
Mellina felt a cold dread settle in her stomach. This was not how her ‘lazy tenure’ was supposed to begin. As Zareo was guided toward the exit, his confiscated belongings—a worn leather satchel and a slim, iron-bound ledger—clattered onto a nearby stone bench. One of the automatons kicked at the satchel, and the old ledger tumbled out, landing open on the cold stone. Mellina’s gaze snagged on the delicate script, a familiar, spidery hand. It was the Guild’s medical ledger, usually locked away in private archives. Why would Zareo have it? Her eyes skimmed the page, drawn to a name circled in a precise, almost surgical hand: *Zareo, C. M.* Below it, a chilling diagnosis, dated almost a year ago: *Terminal Humoral Degeneration. Prognosis: 3-6 months. All known alchemical interventions ineffective.* Her gaze darted to the next entry, a single, bold line penned in a different, more recent hand: *Accidental administration of Xylosian Acid. Symptoms temporarily ameliorated. Unexpected stabilization.*
Mellina felt the floor tilt beneath her. Her accidental spill, the one that had dissolved Zareo’s coat and cured his chronic cough, hadn’t been a mere fluke. It had been the only thing keeping him alive.
