Chapter 5 of 10
The Poisoned Root

The carved sun-sparrow lay smooth and cool in Zorya’s palm. Bolek’s retreating footsteps faded down the dormitory corridor, leaving her alone with Misha's small gift. Winning the Scramble would mean nothing if Stanimir transformed into an Umbral and tore her apart first. She could not just endure the bond; she had to dismantle the curse at its roots.
Her path led straight to the subterranean repository. The Spire’s central data-vaults kept restricted treatises locked away from common scholarship students, but Stanimir’s obsidian keycard remained in her coat pocket.
By midnight, the penthouse fell still, Stanimir shut behind the thick oak of his study. Zorya slipped out, pressing the card between her fingers. Subterranean levels sprawled beneath the main spire behind wrought-iron gates etched with ward-glyphs. She swept the obsidian edge across the reader. Copper gears ground, and the barrier swung open into aisles of crystalline scrolls and data-slabs smelling of ozone and dried ink.
She stepped to an empty terminal and keyed queries into the scrying-panel: 'Umbral Curses', then narrowed the parameters to 'Symbiotic Manifestations' and 'Transference Rituals'. Redaction bars blotted most results, but past the third index she uncovered fragmented case notes on corruptions that were forged rather than inherited.
Meanwhile, Bolek was not idle. His worry for Zorya gnawed at him. He couldn’t shake the image of her pale face, the forced smile. He spent his evenings poring over the Spire’s official duel records, searching for any anomaly, any clue that might explain Zorya’s sudden, terrifying alliance. He skipped late-night card games, ignored calls from his usual study group. The public records were vast and dry, but he tracked Stanimir Volkov’s tournament logs, filtering by 'Power Fluctuations' and 'Unexplained Anomalies.'
His search led him to a report from a year prior. A ritual duel. Volkov versus Voronin. Nadezhda. The entry detailed a fierce, protracted battle, culminating in a sudden, almost uncharacteristic defeat for Stanimir. The notes mentioned a powerful counter-spell from Nadezhda, one not commonly taught, described vaguely as ‘Umbral Binding.’ Three days after that match, an emergency medical log documented Stanimir Volkov for 'sudden umbral corruption and core instability.' Bolek leaned toward the console screen, muttering a curse under his breath. The corruption had not manifested by chance; Nadezhda had driven it into him like an iron spike.
Deep in the lower vaults, a degraded manuscript title loaded onto Zorya’s console: 'Codex of the Poisoned Root: A Study of Intentional Transference.' The author’s name was scrubbed clean. The text detailed a rare ritual construct labeled a 'Symbiotic Curse,' designed to be forced from one caster into another during formal combat.
Her pulse drummed against her collarbone as she read the translated passage: *“The Symbiotic Curse requires an external ‘catalyst’ object to maintain its hold on the new host. Without the catalyst, the curse’s connection to its originator weakens, eventually dissolving, and the host is freed.”*
Zorya stared at the lines of illuminated text. Stanimir had not inherited this poison; someone had planted it. If Nadezhda had broken him in that duel, she was the originator holding the catalyst—a physical focus feeding the dark current that threatened to turn him into an Umbral. To cure Stanimir and secure her own survival, she would have to rip that token from Nadezhda's hands.
