System Overflow

The 1st floor of the Galdan Spire screamed. It wasn't the shriek of metal, but the tearing of air itself, a cacophony of atmospheric friction as the colossal monolith plunged through the clouds. Dust, splintered stone, and shredded chunks of what had once been a floating forest rained down around Tenam. He stumbled, barely keeping his feet, Zempa’s light frame cradled in his arms. Her skin felt cool, like polished river stone, and her dark hair, unbound and free, drifted around them as if caught in an updraft. Her eyes remained closed, but her lips moved, a soft, almost imperceptible whisper.
“...*Reintegration sequence… incomplete… Core fractured… mana influx… critical…*”
Tenam's chest tightened into a knot. This wasn’t Zempa. This was a hollow echo, a ghost in a machine, her essence still bound to the crumbling structure. He pressed her closer, a fierce, protective growl rumbling in his chest. “Zempa! Look at me! It’s Tenam!”
Her eyes flickered open then, pupils dilating, not with recognition, but with an eerie, distant glow. She looked *through* him, at some unseen construct of logic and power.

The brass horn blared again, a broken, desperate wail that echoed the Spire’s death throes. Guru Yonten, his knuckles bloodied against the flagstones, struggled to his feet, his robes flapping wildly in the windblast that tore through the collapsing architecture. Runes in his irises pulsed, frantic and bright.
“The Mandala… it’s starving,” Yonten rasped, pointing a trembling finger at the central dais. It was a massive, crystalline plinth, now spiderwebbed with cracks, emitting a faint, flickering amber light. “The Spire needs mana. Raw, undiluted essence. It’s trying to re-establish the core connection, but Zempa… she’s too weak to sustain it, and the Spire is too damaged.”
Tenam looked from the glowing dais to Zempa, then back to the abyss that had swallowed the 90th floor. He ground his teeth together. “Starving? Then we feed it.”
His hands moved like blurs, plunging into the depths of his spatial bags. A cascade of absurd, magically infused produce erupted onto the shattered floor. Exploding sun-fruits, the size of a grown man’s head, rolled across the ground, their skins pulsing with latent energy. Luminescent, emerald-hued Gourdblooms bounced alongside them, humming with concentrated life force. Tenam hurled them at the dais, not gently, but with the frustrated violence of a man trying to fix a broken plow with his bare hands.
“Eat, you miserable pile of rocks!” he bellowed, his voice raw with fury and despair. “Take it all! Just fix her!”
He threw handfuls of his prized, mythic-tier ‘Sky-Root Radishes’ – each one glowing like a miniature sun – into the crystalline pillar's flickering maw. The stone plinth absorbed them with a sickening crackle, the amber light flaring brighter, then dimming again. It wasn’t enough. The falling acceleration grew, pressing them against the collapsing structure.

The plinth sputtered, displaying lines of nonsensical code: `CABBAGE_COMPRESSION_ERROR`, `TOMATO_SPICY_OVERLOAD`, `GOURDBLOOM_LIFEFORCE_SPIKE`. Tenam watched, horrified, as his most potent crops were consumed, only to be rejected by an interface that couldn’t process such raw, agricultural power. The Spire continued its plummet, ripping through another cloud layer, the distant plains of Orakhan rushing closer.
“It’s not enough!” Yonten cried, his voice barely audible over the roar of the wind. He stared at Zempa, a profound sorrow settling on his face. “She… she is the new Heart. But I… I was the old.”
Tenam spun, his grip on Zempa tightening. “What are you talking about, old man?!”
“The Spire needed a guardian. A living core to bind its power. When the monoliths first fell, before Zempa… before *her* sacrifice… there was another. I was a remnant. A living memory of the ancient architects, left to guide the next Heart, to ensure the cycle continued.” Yonten’s eyes, normally so serene, now burned with an unearthly glow, arcane glyphs swirling within their depths. “I guarded the Spire’s true origin. Not just from the outside, but from its own destructive purpose.”
He stepped towards the dais, his boots ringing sharp against the cracked flags. “Zempa broke the mold. She fought the Mandala, even from within. She changed the Spire’s core directive from ‘destroy’ to ‘stabilize’. But now… the core is fractured. The Spire is reverting to its original purpose: total annihilation on impact.”

“I can rewrite the landing sequence,” Yonten said, his voice quiet, filled with a melancholic certainty. He looked at Tenam, then at the unconscious Zempa, a faint, sad smile touching his lips. “But this remnant… it is the last link to the old core. It holds the original stabilization protocols. It will cost me everything.”
Tenam’s mind reeled. The old man, the enigmatic guru, was a living part of the Spire itself? A sliver of the very power that held Orakhan in thrall? His hot temper flared, a desperate denial against the impossible choice.
“No! There has to be another way!” Tenam roared, clutching Zempa tighter. “You’re not sacrificing yourself, old man! I won’t let you!”
“There isn’t time, Tenam,” Yonten replied, his smile widening slightly, a serene acceptance washing over his features. “Tell Zempa… I am sorry I could not see her garden grow.”
With that, Guru Yonten closed his eyes and stepped into the fractured plinth. A blinding flash of pure, golden light erupted, consuming him. The crystal thrummed, not with a dying sputter, but with a surge of raw, ancient power. Tenam shielded Zempa’s face against his chest, the light searing his vision. The roar of the descending Spire intensified, becoming a monstrous, all-consuming shriek. The 1st floor bucked violently, then shuddered with an earth-shattering impact. A blinding white light engulfed the room, throwing Tenam into darkness.
