Chapter 2 of 10

The Minotaur and the Mulch

The *CRACK* escalated into a full, shattering roar as the cavern ceiling above the Sanctuary Plot detonated. Chunks of primeval rock, thick as market stalls, rained down, pulverizing aggressive 'Mana-Thistle' bushes and kicking up geysers of nutrient-rich soil. Through the dust and debris, a colossal, shaggy form descended, landing with a ground-shaking *THUD* that sent tremors through the entire farm. It was Tarbos the Earth-Render, the legendary Floor 15 boss, a horned titan whose sweeping crest alone could impale a dozen Awakened. His eyes, twin pools of molten gold, blazed with territorial fury, fixed not on the battle-ready Yenna, but on the freshly tilled soil near Tiras's prize 'Sun-Sprout' patch. He roared again, a sound that vibrated in the chest cavity, and charged. His hooves, each the size of a carriage wheel, tore divots from the hallowed ground. His broad, obsidian axe, capable of splitting mountains, cleaved the air with a whistling rush. This was it. The end. Yenna’s mind raced, a frantic calculation of damage. Her battle-axe, ‘Crimson’s Kiss’, felt like a feather in her trembling hand. She could not possibly win. But she would make them pay. Her Guild members, her family, her home… she would die defending it. She squared her shoulders, a defiant, solitary figure against the charging mountain of muscle and rage. “Tiras! Get back! NOW!” she shrieked, her voice thin against the impending storm. She braced, ready to meet the charge, ready for the glorious, doomed last stand of Guildmaster Roskarl. But Tiras didn’t move. He simply took another step forward, a placid smile on his face, holding a half-eaten 'Sun-Sprout' like a snack. His movements were too slow, too calm, utterly insane. The beast's charge devoured the distance. The wind of its passage ruffled Tiras’s hair. Its furious roar echoed in the small valley. Yenna closed her eyes, preparing for the splatter, the impact, the sickening crunch of bone. Instead, there was a wet, snuffling sound. Then a deep, rumbling purr, a sound far too gentle for something so colossal. Yenna’s eyes snapped open. Tarbos, the Earth-Render, was not impaling Tiras. He was leaning down, his broad, horned head nudging Tiras’s outstretched hand. Tiras, completely oblivious to the world-ending terror he had just averted, was vigorously scratching the beast under its enormous, shaggy chin. Tarbos’s golden eyes were half-closed in bliss, his tufted tail, thick as a tree trunk, thumping a steady rhythm on the scorched earth. He nudged Tiras again, letting out another plaintive, rumbling purr. He was asking for more. [“Your reckless act of kindness has once again defied logic and earned you a reward. Target: Minotaur. Previous disposition: World-Ender. Current disposition: Happy Farmhand. Reward: ‘Iron-Root Plowshare’ seeds. These crops grow into self-repairing, magically reinforced plows, perfect for taming even the most stubborn soil. Seriously, how do you do it?”] Tiras, looking genuinely pleased, retrieved a small, intricately carved wooden plow from behind a particularly prickly 'Spike-Gourd' bush. He attached it to a thick leather harness he’d apparently been carrying, then, with a light pat to Tarbos’s flank, pointed towards a fallow field. “Good boy, Tarbos! Let’s get this soil ready for the ‘Sun-Sprouts’, shall we?” And Tarbos the Earth-Render, the terrifying, building-sized dungeon boss, *trotted* off, happily dragging the plow, its obsidian axe still clutched in one giant hand, using it to occasionally knock aside a rogue boulder. The sounds of its hooves now sounded less like destruction and more like… diligent work. Yenna stared, jaw hanging so low it felt dislocated. Her battle-axe, forgotten, clattered to the ground. Lord Vexath, who had watched the entire spectacle unfold without moving a muscle, merely took a slow, deliberate sip from the steaming mug of coffee Tiras had finally handed him. A wisp of steam curled from his nostrils. “Adequate,” he rumbled, then lifted an eyebrow at Tarbos. “Efficient, too. This coffee… the beans are fresh, I presume?” “Freshly roasted Mana-Beans, Lord Vexath,” Tiras replied, beaming, completely missing Yenna’s barely contained explosion. “Just this morning.” Yenna’s face was a masterpiece of conflicting emotions: utter humiliation, profound confusion, and a burgeoning, righteous fury. She stalked over to Tiras, her steps heavy. “Tiras Vangalos!” she hissed, snatching up his collar, her face inches from his. “What in the name of the Spire was that?! You just… you just *domesticated* a Floor 15 Boss! A creature that massacred the entire Eleventh Expeditionary Guild last year! What are these ‘Sun-Sprouts’? Why were you carrying a plow? Are you insane?!” Tiras blinked, completely unfazed by her intensity. “Oh, Tarbos? He just needed a little attention. And some good soil, of course. Everything grows better with love, Yenna. And the plow is for the new ‘Iron-Root’ seeds the System gave me. They’ll make excellent tilling tools!” He gestured vaguely at Tarbos, who was now expertly furrowing a line of soil with the precision of a seasoned farmer. Before Yenna could articulate the 7,000 follow-up questions screaming in her mind, a cheerful voice cut through the tension. “Tiras! I’ve got the nutrient-rich ‘Slime-Mould’ compost you asked for!” Orikas Dendron, Tiras’s best friend, ambled into the farm, effortlessly balancing three enormous sacks of pungent, iridescent green fertilizer on his shoulders. He was a mountain of a man, all muscle and good cheer, his movements remarkably light for his size. He grinned, a wide, easy smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes. “Good morning, Guildmaster Yenna! Beautiful day for some cultivation, wouldn’t you say?” He passed Tiras a sack, their hands brushing. As their fingers met, the ‘Spire-Seeker’, a small, intricately enchanted brass bauble clipped to Yenna’s belt, suddenly shrieked. A piercing, metallic wail ripped through the air, followed by a frantic pulsing of crimson light. The device, designed to detect high-level Spire entities, vibrated violently, its needle spinning wildly before slamming hard against the 'BOSS ENTITY DETECTED' inscription, glowing with an angry glare. Yenna, startled, ripped the bauble from her belt. Its angry red glow painted Orikas’s face in an alarming hue. Her eyes, sharp and suspicious, darted from the screaming artifact to Orikas, then back again. Orikas, his cheerful demeanor momentarily faltering, swallowed hard. His gaze flickered nervously towards Tiras, then, in a desperate, last-ditch effort to deflect suspicion, he jabbed a calloused thumb over his shoulder, pointing at the purring boss diligently plowing the distant field. “Ah, probably… probably Tarbos, Guildmaster Yenna! He’s, uh, quite the boss, isn’t he? Very… boss-like.” Yenna’s gaze hardened, her focus shifting to the absurdly docile brute, then back to Orikas. The compass, still screaming, still accusing, vibrated in her hand. But before she could press Orikas further, the sky above the Sanctuary Plot, already fractured by Tarbos’s arrival, began to shimmer. Not with light, but with an eerie, almost painful distortion of reality. A vast, holographic display materialized, visible only to Tiras and Orikas. It hung suspended in the air, a stark, digital countdown timer, glowing with an ominous crimson light. Its stark white text read: “Spire Deletion Imminent: 7 Days”
