Chapter 1 of 10
Aggressive Botany and Uninvited Guests

The obsidian-tipped tendril shot from the subterranean gloom, a blur of predatory intent. It whistled past Tiras Vangalos’s ear, close enough to ruffle the few strands of tawny hair escaping his straw sun hat, and slammed into the soil where his foot had been milliseconds before. The ground erupted, a shower of dark, fertile earth. Tiras, mid-squat, had been inspecting a particularly robust sprout of crimsonleaf cabbage, its leaves glinting with a subtle, life-affirming mana. He didn’t even flinch. He just sighed, a sound of mild inconvenience.
“Oh, come on, little fella,” Tiras murmured, turning to face the attacker. “We just got this patch properly tilled. And I was *this* close to figuring out why the ‘Crimsonheart’ variant is only budding on the south side.”
The ‘little fella’ was a Floor 15 Web-Stalker, a creature of nightmare even by Spire standards. It was a skeletal arachnid, all razor-sharp chitin and glowing, multi-faceted eyes, each leg ending in a needle-like spike designed to impale and drain. It clicked and hissed, its pitch-black shell glistening, preparing another lunge. It was roughly the size of a carriage, and currently perched precariously on a row of Tiras’s experimental, mana-infused ‘Razor-Vine’ melons, which, to their credit, were already beginning to sprout barbed defensive tendrils.
“Now, now, let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” Tiras said, his voice gentle, as if addressing a particularly energetic puppy. He reached into the deep pocket of his dirt-stained overalls, pulling out a vibrant, fist-sized pepper. It pulsed with an internal, fiery glow, radiating enough heat to blur the air. “You look hungry. I bet you’d love a nice, spicy snack. Full of capsaicin… and a little something extra for those persistent mana-drains.”
The creature, clearly unaccustomed to being offered culinary treats by its prey, paused, its mandibles clicking in confusion. Tiras, ever the optimist, tossed the pepper with a soft underhand flick. It sailed through the air, a miniature sun, and landed squarely on the creature’s central carapace.
For a beat, nothing happened. Then, with a sound like a thousand torches igniting simultaneously, the pepper detonated. A concussive wave of searing heat and raw, unleashed solar mana ripped through the air, turning the beast into a rapidly expanding cloud of ash and vapor. The Razor-Vine melons, however, seemed to thrive on the sudden burst of energy, their tendrils lashing out with renewed vigor, now coated in fine, sparkling embers.
Just as the last vestiges of superheated air dissipated, a figure burst through the reinforced gate of the Sanctuary Plot. Yenna Roskarl, Guildmaster of the Azure Guard, hair a wild tempest of auburn, her formidable enchanted gauntlets glowing with a protective aura, skidded to a halt. Her battle-axe, ‘Stormbreaker,’ was already drawn, its polished edge glinting dangerously. Her eyes, usually a calm, calculating sapphire, were wide with alarm.
“Tiras! Are you insane?!” she bellowed, scanning the empty space where the beast had been. “I heard the alarms! Another of those vile Floor-Scuttlers was heading your way! I swear, one of these days you’re going to get yourself eviscerated trying to plant a sprout! Where is it?!”
Tiras dusted his hands, oblivious. “Oh, that? Just a little pest. Tried to sample my melons. Had to give it a taste of its own medicine, so to speak.” He gestured vaguely at the lingering haze of ash. “Honestly, Yenna, the mana fluctuation from those things is terrible for the ph-balance of the soil. Might have to re-aerate the east patch.”
Yenna stared, her mouth slightly agape. She saw the smoking crater in the earth, the supercharged Razor-Vines, and the faint, acrid smell of ozone and burnt chitin. She had raced down fifteen floors, bypassing countless dangers, envisioning Tiras impaled on a spike, only to find him calmly discussing soil health over the smoking remnants of what had been a Floor Boss-level threat.
[“Host Tiras Vangalos. Reckless Kindness detected. Attempted to domesticate a xenomorphic apex predator with a snack. Failure, but points for effort. Processing… Reward: One (1) Mana-Bean Seed (Grade: Mythic, Origin: Verdant Crucible).”]
Tiras blinked at the system message, a faint hum echoing in his mind. “A Mana-Bean? Oh, excellent! I’ve been meaning to try brewing some of the ‘Verdant Crucible’ blend. Been craving a good cup.” He carefully plucked the newly manifested, iridescent seed from the air, admiring its deep indigo hue and the subtle pulses of energy it emitted.
“A good cup of what, Tiras?!” Yenna’s voice was strained, a tight wire of exasperation. “A good cup of *death*? You think I don’t worry every single second you’re down here? This isn’t some cozy patch in the Sunstone Dell! This is Floor 15! Every plant here wants to kill you, every creature wants to eat you, and half the air itself is toxic!” She took a deep breath, trying to rein in her fury. “You can’t just offer fire-peppers to giant spiders! What if it had *eaten* it? Then what?”
Tiras looked genuinely puzzled. “Well, then it would’ve had a really bad tummy ache, I imagine. And probably exploded anyway, just from the inside out. Messier, but the principle’s the same.” He headed towards a small, sturdy-looking shed at the edge of his cultivated area, the Mana-Bean already clutched in his palm.
Yenna threw her hands up in exasperation, her carefully cultivated composure shattering. “Tiras! You are the most infuriating, unbelievably… *fragile* human being I have ever met! You’re going to be the death of me!”
“Just brewing some coffee, Yenna,” Tiras called back, already inside the shed. A soft, crackling sound emerged, followed by an intensely rich, earthy aroma. Moments later, he re-emerged, holding a simple ceramic mug, steam curling invitingly from its dark surface. The air around him rippled faintly, the very mana within the Spire seeming to draw closer to the potent brew. “Want a sip? Might calm those frayed nerves of yours. It’s a fresh roast.”
Yenna opened her mouth to deliver another scathing lecture on his recklessness, but the words died in her throat. Her gaze, initially fixed on Tiras, drifted past him, towards the far end of the Sanctuary Plot. Her gaze locked forward, and the protective aura around her gauntlets flared. The air, already thick with the scent of mana-coffee, went cold and rigid.
With a deafening crack, the stone ceiling above the outer perimeter of the farm splintered. Dust and loose rock rained down as a colossal figure, wreathed in void-smoke and raw, untamed power, crash-landed onto the edge of Tiras’s newly tilled ‘Sunsprout’ patch. The impact shook the very foundation of Floor 15, sending tremors through the ground. This was no Floor 15 scavenger. This was something far, far worse.
Lord Vexath, Warlord of Floor 50, a being of pure, solidified malice, stood amidst the ruined sunsprouts. His armor, crafted from the fused scales of forgotten abyssal beasts, was jagged and menacing. His towering form cast a silhouette that stretched across the entire farm, eclipsing the dim light of the Spire’s mana-lodes. He was a harbinger of destruction, a living embodiment of the Spire’s most brutal horrors, and his arrival usually presaged mass slaughter. Yet, his head, crowned with cruel, obsidian horns, didn’t immediately turn to Tiras. Instead, his multifaceted gaze, typically burning with cold, calculated fury, seemed to… waver. His nostril-slits flared once, twice, inhaling deeply.
“Coffee,” Lord Vexath rumbled, a sound like grinding tectonic plates, his voice echoing off the rock. His gaze, now narrowed, fixed on the steaming mug in Tiras’s hand. “Give. Now.” He then, with surprising grace for a warlord of his magnitude, stalked over to the small, rustic porch Tiras had built, brushing aside a few aggressive ‘Mana-Thistle’ bushes with casual contempt, and sat down on the rickety wooden bench. The wood groaned but miraculously held.
Yenna, battle-axe still poised, stared from Tiras to Vexath, then back again, her jaw hanging slack. The Floor 50 Warlord, who had personally massacred entire Awakened contingents, was sitting on Tiras’s porch, demanding a beverage.
Before anyone could process the absurdity, a new sound began. A deep, resonant *thump-thump-thump*, growing louder by the second, accompanied by a chilling *CRACK* as the ceiling overhead began to split apart, a colossal, building-sized darkness falling over the entire farm.
