Chapter 2: The Price of Suture Threads

Cold steel pressed against my throat, the edge so sharp it threatened to draw blood with my next breath. Breathing hard, Damian Wayne glared at me through a haze of fever and green-tinged sweat. His fingers, though trembling from the poison coursing through his veins, held the scalpel with lethal precision. "Stay back," he rasped, his voice dropping to a dangerous, gravelly whisper. "One move, and I will sever your carotid." Trembling violently, his body betrayed his threat. Greenish veins pulsed angrily along his collarbone, a clear sign that the Grave-Rot toxin was rapidly reaching his central nervous system. "You are dying, Robin," I said, keeping my voice level as I slowly raised my hands. "You crashed through my skylight, bleeding and poisoned. If you slice my throat, you die in this chair in less than five minutes." Aureliano whimpered from the corner of the room, backing up against the rusted metal counter. His dark brown skin had turned a dusty shade of grey, and his amber eyes were wide with terror. Blond curls bounced as he shook his head, his hands clutching a tray of surgical instruments like a shield. His blond lashes fluttered rapidly as he stared at the legendary vigilante threatening his employer. "Quiet, Aureliano," I commanded softly, keeping my eyes locked on Damian's intense, emerald gaze. "He isn't going to kill anyone. He doesn't have the strength." Damian's knuckles turned white around the scalpel. He tried to lung forward, but his knees buckled, his breath escaping in a sharp, ragged gasp. Adrenaline surged through my veins. Seizing the split-second distraction, I snatched a pre-loaded syringe of localized paralytic from my apron pocket. With a sudden, practiced movement, I jammed the needle into the side of his neck and depressed the plunger before he could react. Sharp and agonizing, his gasp echoed through the cramped clinic. He tried to slash at me, but his muscles suddenly refused to obey his commands, the paralytic freezing his nervous system from the neck down. "What did... you do..." he choked out, his eyes blazing with absolute fury as his fingers finally loosened, letting the scalpel clatter onto the concrete floor. "A localized neuro-blocker," I explained, breathing a sigh of relief as I kicked the scalpel under a cabinet. "It will keep you still for twenty minutes. Just enough time for me to save your stubborn life." Grabbing the custom IV bag from the refrigerator, I hooked it to the metal stand beside his chair. The pale blue liquid inside was my own synthesized creation, packed with the unique antibodies harvested from my own blood. Swiftly, I prepped his arm with an alcohol wipe, inserted the needle, and secured the line with medical tape. The cool serum began to drip down the tube, entering his bloodstream. Green-tinted veins on his arm began to pulse violently as the antibodies met the aggressive Grave-Rot toxin. Damian let out a low growl of pain, his jaw clenching so hard I feared his teeth would crack. "This is..." Damian gasped, his eyes widening in sudden, terrifying comprehension as the serum began to work. "This formulation... it is a localized Lazarus derivative... synthesized with military-grade inhibitors." Sweat dripped from his brow as he glared at me with renewed suspicion. "Where did a back-alley medic obtain a highly classified League of Shadows antidote?" "Lie down," I snapped, adjusting the drip rate to mask my mounting panic. "You are hallucinating. It's just a high-grade broad-spectrum anti-toxin." Helplessly pinned by the paralytic, his head remained locked in place, but his gaze sliced through me like a razor. "Do not lie to me, girl. I know the exact chemical signature of my grandfather's poisons, and I know what cures them. Who are you?" Aureliano stepped closer, his amber eyes darting between us. He wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans, his young face etched with deep anxiety. "I know you," Damian murmured suddenly, his gaze shifting to Aureliano. "The Gilded Cage. You are the dancer. The golden boy from the VIP lounge." Shock froze Aureliano in his tracks. His dark skin went even paler, his breath hitching as he stared at the paralyzed Boy Wonder. "You... you were there?" Aureliano whispered, his voice cracking. "The wealthy patron in the dark coat... that was you?" "Shut your mouth, Aureliano," I warned, my heart hammering against my ribs. "He is delirious. He doesn't know what he's talking about." Panic, cold and sharp, flared in my chest. I couldn't let Damian connect the dots, and I couldn't let him leave this clinic knowing who we were. "He's not delirious, Lyra," Aureliano said, tears welling in his amber eyes. "He was investigating the underground ring. He saw me. He saw Leo, Catalina, and little Valeria." "He was tracking the League's financial assets," Damian rasped, his voice gaining strength as the antibodies fought off the poison. "The brothel is a front for their human trafficking and biological distribution. Your siblings are collateral, boy." Amber eyes burning with desperation, Aureliano looked at me. "If he knows where they are, he can save them. Lyra, please. You have to help him." "My siblings are still trapped there," Aureliano pleaded, turning back to Damian. "They forced Leo and Catalina into the back rooms last week. Valeria is only fourteen. They're going to sell her next." "Focus," I ordered Aureliano, trying to suppress the rising tide of my own tragic memories. "We survive the night first. Then we worry about the rest." Pouring a vial of saline over Damian's shoulder wound, I began flushing out the dead tissue. The smell of copper and burnt iron filled the room as the chemical reaction dissolved the toxic buildup. Damian's gaze returned to me, relentless and probing. "You avoided my question. No black-market dealer has access to this level of cellular regeneration. Who synthesized this serum?" "I bought it from a smuggler at Dock Forty," I lied smoothly, threading a curved needle with suture line. "He said it was surplus from an old military lab. I didn't ask questions, and neither should you." "A lie," Damian growled, his jaw tightening as I pierced his skin with the needle. "You are hiding something, doctor. And I will uncover it." His grip on his emotions was terrifyingly absolute. Even paralyzed and in intense pain, he was analyzing me, cataloging my micro-expressions, looking for a weakness. Fear of abandonment, cold and heavy, gripped my throat. If he figured out who I was—the daughter of the traitors who stole the League's research—he would leave me to face them alone, or worse, hand me over to his grandfather to secure his own legacy. If I let him walk out of here, I would have to run again. I would have to abandon this clinic, abandon Aureliano, and disappear into the sewers like a rat. "Believe what you want, Robin," I whispered, pulling the first suture tight. "But right now, I am the only thing keeping your heart beating." Suddenly, a heavy vibration rattled the surgical trays on the metal counter. The fluorescent light bulb overhead flickered once, then died, leaving us in the dim amber glow of the emergency backup generator. Rhythmic and precise, the sound came again, vibrating through the concrete floor beneath our feet. Three distinct, metallic strikes echoed from the alleyway entrance, followed by the scraping sound of steel against steel. A heavy, rhythmic thudding on the reinforced steel door of her clinic signals the arrival of three masked League of Shadows assassins tracking the Boy Wonder's blood trail.
