Chapter 1: Glass Shards and Emerald Silk

Surgical steel felt ice-cold against Lyra’s fingers. She adjusted her grip on the needle holder, her knuckles turning white under the thin latex of her gloves. Around her, the basement clinic smelled of rust, damp concrete, and the bitter tang of cheap rubbing alcohol. Every surface was stained with the history of Gotham's desperate souls, patched up in the dead of night far from the prying eyes of the police.
Fluorescent tubes hummed overhead, casting a harsh, flickering green glow over the blood-spattered operating table. The light buzzed like a trapped insect, a constant, irritating reminder of the fragile power grid in Gotham's Narrows. Outside, the rain beat a relentless rhythm against the brick alleyway, but down here, only the drip of a leaky pipe broke the heavy silence.
Beside the operating table, Aureliano adjusted the overhead lamp, his movements precise despite the visible tremor in his hands. He was trying to stay focused, but the exhaustion was etched deep into his handsome features. His shoulders slumped under the weight of a life far too heavy for a sixteen-year-old.
"Keep the clamps steady, Aurel," Lyra muttered, her eyes never leaving the ragged tear in the mobster's thigh. Her voice was flat, devoid of the panic that usually screamed in the back of her mind.
Gently, the sixteen-year-old boy adjusted his grip on the steel forceps. He didn't complain, even though his muscles must have been aching from hours of assisting her in the cramped space.
His dark brown skin shone with a thin sheen of sweat under the hot lights. He had pushed his blond, curly hair back beneath a paper surgical cap, but a few stray locks escaped, catching the light.
Amber eyes, framed by unusually pale, blond lashes, locked onto the wound with intense focus. Aureliano was young, too young for this kind of work, but Gotham didn't care about age.
Lyra slid the curved needle through flesh, tying off another suture with practiced ease. She had spent years perfecting this craft, learning how to mend broken bodies in the dark.
Every stitch had to be perfect. She couldn't afford a single mistake in this basement sanctuary, where the line between life and death was as thin as a surgical blade.
If the low-level street enforcer on her table bled out, his bosses would make sure she met a similar fate. They didn't tolerate failure, especially from an unlicensed street doctor.
Gotham's underworld did not offer second chances. Lyra knew this better than anyone, having spent her entire youth running from the ghosts of her past.
"How are Catalina and Leo holding up?" Lyra asked quietly, her voice barely louder than the hum of the generator. She needed to keep Aureliano talking, to keep his mind off the blood.
Aureliano swallowed hard, his throat bobbing as he stared at the bloody surgical field. His knuckles gripped the clamps so tightly they turned pale.
"Leo is trying to keep Valeria safe, but the managers are getting impatient," he whispered, his voice cracking slightly with raw emotion. "They want more from us every single day."
"Catalina had to perform three sets on the main stage tonight, and they are threatening to move Valeria to the VIP rooms soon." His voice trembled, filled with a helpless, burning fury.
Anger flared hot in Lyra’s chest, but she forced her hands to remain completely still. She knew the nightmare he was describing all too well.
Vivienne's establishment, a gilded cage disguised as a high-end brothel, was a meat grinder for the desperate. It swallowed young lives and spat out broken shells.
Aureliano, at sixteen, worked tirelessly here in her clinic, hoping to save enough of her under-the-table payments to buy his family’s freedom. It was a beautiful, tragic dream.
He had mentioned a strange rumor earlier, something about a new presence in the club's security detail. Someone who didn't fit the usual profile of Vivienne's thugs.
"A new guard came in last night," Aureliano murmured, his eyes darting toward the clinic's reinforced steel door. "He was quiet, cold, and he looked at everyone like they were targets."
Lyra knotted the thread and snipped the excess with a sharp click of her scissors. She wiped a smear of blood from the patient's thigh.
"We will get them out, Aurel," Lyra promised, her voice firm. "I am working on a new chemical synthesis that the major gangs will pay a fortune for, and once that is done, we are leaving."
Before Aureliano could reply, a deafening explosion shattered the silence of the night, blowing the world apart.
Glass rained down in a deadly downpour, slicing through the air like a thousand tiny knives. The concussive blast threw Lyra backward, her head slamming against the concrete wall.
Screams tore from the sedated mobster on the table as a massive weight slammed down from above. The entire room shook, dust rising in a thick, choking cloud.
Dust and plaster choked the air, forcing Lyra to shield her eyes with her forearm as she struggled to breathe. The smell of burning cordite filled the room.
A heavy, armored figure had crashed directly through the reinforced glass skylight, crushing the steel operating table under its immense weight.
Blood splattered across the concrete floor, mixing with the shattered fragments of glass. The mobster lay groaning on the floor, his stitched wound torn open once more.
Instinct made Lyra grab Aureliano, pulling him behind the heavy metal drug cabinet as she reached for her hidden scalpel.
Aureliano scrambled backward, his amber eyes wide with absolute terror as he clutched a surgical tray to his chest like a shield.
Coughing through the thick, grey haze, Lyra peeked around the side of the metal cabinet, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Green, red, and gold fabric was visible through the settling debris. It was a uniform she recognized instantly, one that brought hope to some and terror to others.
Robin lay gasped out on the ruined table, his body twitching violently as blood pooled beneath his dark cape.
Crimson stained the bright yellow of his chest emblem, and his mask was cracked, revealing a pale, sweat-slicked face underneath.
Underneath the torn leather of his uniform, his skin was mottled with a terrifying, greenish-black discoloration.
"Is he... dead?" Aureliano whispered, his voice trembling as he peered over Lyra's shoulder, his blond curls dusted with white plaster.
Lyra stepped closer, her medical instincts momentarily overriding her sheer panic. She approached the fallen hero with slow, cautious steps.
Sweet, heavy scent hit her nostrils immediately, cutting through the sharp smell of copper, ozone, and burning electronics.
Rotting lilies.
Grave-Rot toxin.
Panic seized her chest, freezing the breath in her throat. She knew that smell better than her own name.
Her parents had died because of this exact chemical—a weapon designed by them, stolen by the League of Shadows, and used to execute them when they tried to flee.
If the League was back in Gotham, and if they had targeted Robin with this specific poison, her hiding spot was no longer safe.
Looking down at the boy wonder, she saw his chest rise in shallow, agonizing gasps. His body was shutting down.
His hands clutched at his throat, his fingernails clawing uselessly at his own skin as he fought for oxygen.
"Aurel, lock the heavy iron door and grab the charcoal filters," Lyra ordered, her voice suddenly snapping into sharp, clinical authority.
"Lyra, we have to go, if the people who did this follow him—" Aureliano started, his face pale with dread.
His amber eyes darted from the shattered skylight to the bleeding hero, his mind racing with the implications.
"He is the one," Aureliano suddenly gasped, pointing a shaking finger at the boy on the table.
Lyra paused, her hand hovering over her emergency medical kit. She looked from Aureliano to the dying vigilante.
"What do you mean, Aurel?" she demanded, her voice sharp.
"He's the boy who infiltrated the brothel," Aureliano whispered, his voice filled with awe and terror. "The cold-eyed guard. It was him."
Stunned, Lyra stared back down at the vigilante. Damian Wayne—though she only knew him as the lethal, arrogant Robin—had been investigating the very place holding Aureliano’s family hostage.
Black leather boots shifted weakly on the metal table, kicking a stray surgical clamp onto the floor with a sharp clink.
He was dying right in front of her, his life slipping away in shallow, rattling gasps.
Without immediate intervention, the Grave-Rot toxin would liquefy his nervous system within minutes.
Her blood held the only active synthesized antibodies to this specific strain. It was a secret she had guarded with her life.
To use it meant risking everything, exposing her identity, and revealing that a survivor of the Vance family was still alive.
But letting him die felt like a death sentence for Aureliano's siblings, too. If Robin died, their only hope of exposure died with him.
Grabbing a fresh syringe from the cabinet, Lyra made her decision. She couldn't let another person die from her parents' sins.
Aureliano hesitated, then rushed to secure the entrance, his blond curls bouncing as he moved with frantic speed.
Working with practiced efficiency, Lyra ripped open the front of Robin's tactical vest.
She sliced through the reinforced fabric, exposing his muscular, battle-scarred torso.
Deep lacerations scored his ribs, oozing a dark, sluggish fluid that smelled overwhelmingly of rotten flowers.
Blackened veins branched out from the wounds, creeping rapidly toward his collarbone and his heart.
"He has less than ten minutes," Lyra muttered to herself, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Reaching into her desk drawer, she pulled out a hidden sterile vial containing her own harvested serum.
Her fingers trembled as she drew a sample of her own blood—the precious, golden-tinted serum she had spent years refining.
This was her ultimate secret, her curse, and her only shield against the League of Shadows.
She drew ten milliliters of the clear, amber-tinted fluid into the syringe.
Injecting her own modified blood directly into his femoral artery was the fastest way to neutralize the poison.
Aureliano watched in stunned silence from the doorway, his chest heaving as he kept guard.
Slowly, the blackness in Robin's veins began to recede, the violent tremors wracking his body gradually subsiding.
His ragged breathing slowed, turning into a deep, exhausted rhythm.
Relief washed over Lyra, leaving her knees weak and her mind spinning.
Quietly, she leaned over him, reaching out to check his pulse to ensure the heart rate had stabilized.
As Lyra reaches to pulse-check the boy wonder, his gloved hand snaps up, pinning her wrist to the steel table with bone-crushing force as he mutters, "If you speak of this, I will dissect you myself."
