Chapter 7 of 10

The Arsonist's Devotion

Red laser dots danced across her chest. She didn't flinch. Her brain, calm as ever, cataloged the tactical positions, the probable shot angles, the milliseconds before impact. It was a neat, mathematical problem with an unavoidable solution. Then the world exploded again. Not the door. The entire wall beside it, a thick slab of reinforced concrete, disintegrated inward. A concussive roar deafened Kida, throwing her off balance as a cloud of plaster dust, pulverized rock, and acrid smoke billowed into the room. A shadowy, impossibly fast figure launched itself from the roiling chaos, a black blur against the incandescent glow of the breach. The lead breacher collapsed before his barrel could settle back on Kida. Lazaro Cante, his suit coat tattered, streaked with ash and what looked like singed C4 residue, moved with the terrifying grace of a apex predator. He didn't use a gun. He was the weapon. A hand, hardened like granite, snapped a helmeted head back, crushing the man's windpipe with a sickening crack. He pivoted, a knee slamming into another assailant’s jaw, the force lifting the man clear off his feet before he crumpled. The remaining three opened fire, their carbines spitting orange flame. Lazaro moved faster. He was a whirlwind of precise, brutal motion. He ducked under a spray of bullets, his hand snatching the weapon from the soldier’s grasp with a wrenching twist that dislocated the man’s shoulder. The soldier screamed, a raw sound of agony, before Lazaro slammed the butt of the stolen rifle into his face. Bone crunched. The man fell, lifeless. The fourth shooter, frozen by the sudden, overwhelming violence, tried to retreat, fumbling for a sidearm. Lazaro was on him in an instant, a hand closing around the man’s throat, lifting him effortlessly off the floor. The man clawed at Lazaro’s arm, his boots kicking empty air. Lazaro merely tilted his head, a single, cold question in his obsidian eyes. Then, with a casual flick of his wrist, he snapped the man’s neck. The body dropped. The fifth man, perhaps the most experienced, recovered first. He brought his rifle up, aiming directly for Lazaro’s head. Too slow. Lazaro caught the barrel, twisted it away, and plunged his other hand, a blur of motion, directly into the man’s chest. A choked gurgle, a spray of crimson, and the soldier sagged, his chest caved in. Lazaro withdrew his hand, his expression cold and flat, a single drop of blood clinging to his knuckle. The silence that followed was absolute, broken only by the settling dust and the distant, dying groan of the fortress itself. Five elite tactical officers, dispatched with horrifying efficiency. The air smelled of ozone, cordite, and copper. Kida, still standing, processed the scene. Her survival probability had just rocketed from 0.00% to 100.00% in under six seconds. Lazaro stood amidst the carnage, chest heaving slightly, his face smeared with soot, his eyes, still black as polished obsidian, darting around the room. He didn’t look at the bodies. He didn’t look at the smoking breach in the wall. His gaze locked onto Kida. And in that gaze, Kida saw something that defied all her equations: pure, unadulterated terror. “Kida,” he breathed, his voice raw, laced with an unfamiliar tremor. He took a step, then another, moving through the strewn bodies with an unsettling urgency. “Are you hurt? Did they touch you?” His hands, still bearing the faint sheen of fresh blood, hovered over her, not daring to make contact. He scanned her, his eyes searching every inch of her body for an injury, his concern so intense it felt like a physical force. “I am unharmed,” Kida stated, her voice steady. “The calculations were accurate, even with the unexpected variable of your entry point.” Lazaro let out a ragged exhalation, his shoulders slumping. He looked like a man who had just run a marathon to save a child. “Variable?” he echoed, a ghost of his usual menacing grin trying to form, but failing. “You call that… a variable? I was locked in a vault, Kida. A vault that you, my genius wife, sealed with C4 on the *outside* to trap me. Did you truly think I would stay?” His eyes, still so dark, searched hers, begging for an answer she couldn't provide. “It was a logical containment strategy,” Kida replied, maintaining her pragmatic distance. “To prevent your direct engagement with the initial breach, thereby allowing me to implement defensive measures.” Lazaro chuckled then, a low, humorless sound that rumbled in his chest. He reached out, slowly, his hand gently tracing the line of her jaw, his thumb brushing a stray strand of hair from her face. His touch, despite the blood and ash, was surprisingly tender. “Defensive measures,” he repeated softly. “You intended to face them, alone and unarmed, to ‘implement defensive measures.’ And you thought that would stop me from coming for you?” He shook his head, a faint, almost imperceptible smile playing on his lips. “You really are brilliant, Kida. Wildly, beautifully insane.” He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming, his gaze never leaving hers. “I knew, you know,” he murmured, his voice dropping to a near whisper. “I knew you were the Don. From the moment you walked into my office, with your spreadsheets and your absurd logic, demanding a hostage marriage. You didn’t ask for my protection, you demanded a transaction. You didn’t fear me. You analyzed me. And when you leveraged the old pact, the one even my scholars can barely translate, I knew. I knew you were going to be the most magnificent disaster I’d ever seen.” Kida blinked. “You understood the pact’s implications from the start?” Her carefully constructed world, built on logical deductions and predictable human reactions, was crumbling around her. She had been so certain of her miscalculation, so convinced he was an unwitting pawn in her game. “Every bloody word,” Lazaro confirmed, a possessive warmth entering his eyes. “My ancestors, bless their archaic hearts, had a flair for the dramatic. ‘The blood of the new matriarch shall command the strength of the Cante, and her word shall be their unbreakable law.’ It was unambiguous. And when you signed it, that day, with your blood… that was it. My world, Kida, became yours. And I have never, not once, regretted it. I love being your weapon. I love that you don’t ask, you simply *are*. And I exist to ensure that ‘are’ continues indefinitely.” He leaned in, his lips brushing her ear, his breath warm against her skin. “You want to burn the city down, Kida? Just give me the match.” His words, possessive and ferociously devoted, shattered Kida’s understanding of him. He wasn't a monster she had trapped, a cold equation she needed to solve. He was a force of nature, yes, but one entirely, unreservedly *hers*. Her hyper-pragmatic mind, so adept at dissecting threats and assets, found itself without a single reference point for this kind of raw, unhinged romantic devotion. It wasn't a transaction; it was an immolation. And she, for the first time, felt a strange, unsettling warmth bloom in her chest. The moment, charged with a new, terrifying intimacy, was violently interrupted. The security console, still displaying the fortress layout, suddenly blared to life. A frantic, pixelated face filled the main screen. It was Juri, hair disheveled, breath short and wheezing. “Kida! Kida, can you hear me?!” Juri screamed, his voice cracking with terror. “It’s Enzo! He ambushed us at the apartment! Nola! They took Nola!”
