Chapter 7 of 10

The Pool Noodle Maneuver

The Echo-Core’s metallic clang echoed through the subterranean chamber, vibrating in Jorvan’s bones. The blood-red holographic timer, stark and terrifying, pulsed above the interface. One hour. Sixty minutes until the universe became a coffee machine. “An hour? An hour?!” Veylin’s voice was a raw, disbelieving gasp. Her knuckles were white where she gripped the hilt of her melted broadsword. “You built all this, the entire world, and it’s going to be gone in an hour because a cat walked on a button?!” Jorvan rubbed his temples, a dull ache throbbing behind his eyes. “Look, it’s a poorly optimized construct, okay? The auxiliary power reroute probably tripped an emergency debug routine. It’s aggressively ‘optimizing’ the deletion process. Standard shoddy coding practice, frankly.” He glanced at Crumb, who was now meticulously grooming a particularly fluffy patch of fur on his chest, utterly oblivious. “And the cat did not just ‘walk’ on a button. He activated a master conduit interface. Tiny paws, disproportionate chaos.” “We have to get to the surface!” Veylin spun on her heel, her gaze snapping towards the sealed passage leading up. “My people are up there. The Ash-Blood. Their warlord. They must be… what if the acceleration affects them too?” Jorvan frowned. “It’s a world wipe, not a selective prune. Everyone gets deleted. But yes, the surface is probably a good place to start. Admin Nodes, right. And a nap. Eventually.” He snapped his fingers, and the heavy, energy-shielded door that had sealed them in the underground labyrinth simply blinked out of existence, leaving a gaping passage of dark rock. “Lead the way, Commander.” Veylin didn’t hesitate. Her boots pounded against the rough-hewn stone as she sprinted through the freshly opened passage, a fierce determination etched on her face. Jorvan followed, Crumb a fluffy orange blur at his heels, occasionally stopping to sniff a particularly interesting dust bunny. The climb was steep, spiraling upwards through ancient, crumbling access tunnels that reeked of damp earth and stale magic. They burst into the central courtyard of Bastok-Mora just as a guttural roar tore through the air. The scene was pure pandemonium. Ash-Blood demons, their skin like flayed charcoal, swarmed the plaza, clashing with the gold-armored city defenders who had recently ascended. But something was wrong. The Ash-Blood warlord Jorvan had previously sent flying stood at the epicenter of the chaos. He was no longer merely huge; he was grotesquely distorted. Jagged, emerald-green lines of pure data pulsed beneath his obsidian skin, coiling like corrupted vines. His movements were erratic, his colossal frame flickering at the edges as if struggling to render correctly. With each swing of his mighty greatsword, sickly green discharge flared, and wherever it touched the ascended sentinels, their gleaming golden armor corroded instantly, their bodies dissolving into plumes of grey ash. “Aha! My ‘God’ returns!” The fiend's voice was a distorted growl, layered with a low, digital hum. He gestured with his massive sword, the tainted light on its blade searing a wide swath through a cluster of soldiers. “Did you enjoy your little ‘bug fix’ below, Architect? Because your world is still… infested!” He laughed, a chilling, echoing sound that made the ground tremble. Veylin didn’t even glance at Jorvan. Her eyes, usually so guarded, burned with a furious, protective light. “To the ramparts! Fire the Arcanum projectors!” she bellowed, her voice cutting through the din. She launched herself forward, not at the towering brute, but towards a series of ancient, dormant turrets lining the perimeter of the courtyard. The emerald glow from Crumb’s accidental power reroute had transformed the courtyard itself. The turrets, long dead, were now humming with a vibrant, almost sentient hum. She leaped onto a control platform, her hands flying over arcane runes that had been dark mere moments ago. With a deafening thrum, massive energy shields flared into existence, not around the entire Bastion, but specifically above and around the remaining pockets of knights, creating shimmering, green-tinged barriers that deflected the fiend’s destructive discharge. Veylin, her face grim with concentration, coordinated their deployment, directing the defensive fire with practiced precision. She wasn't just a commander; she was a shield, a beacon of defiance. Jorvan watched, a flicker of something akin to admiration in his eyes. “Huh. Impressive. She’s actually doing a good job running this poorly optimized construct.” Then, a stray blast of tainted power, deflected by one of Veylin’s newly powered barriers, ricocheted. It wasn’t aimed at Jorvan, but it grazed him. Specifically, it scorched a small, perfectly circular hole in the left sleeve of his oversized grey hoodie. His favorite fleece, boasting the faded graphic of a grumpy cat holding a coffee mug. Jorvan froze. His casual demeanor evaporated, replaced by an unsettling stillness. His eyes, usually half-lidded with boredom, snapped open, revealing a depth that seemed to swallow the light. The air around him grew heavy, vibrating with an unseen force. Crumb, sensing the shift, flattened his ears and backed away, a tiny, fluffy orange shadow. “My… hoodie,” Jorvan stated, his voice dangerously low. “You… scorched… my hoodie.” The fiend, mid-swing, paused, confused by the sudden, profound shift in the deity's presence. “What in the Abyss are you blathering about, insect? Your end is nigh!” He raised his colossal greatsword high above his head, ready to cleave through Veylin’s barrier and the soldiers beneath it. Jorvan lifted a single hand, his expression utterly devoid of humor. “That was a limited edition. I got it on sale. Do you have any idea how hard it is to find good quality, ironically-themed casual wear in a world full of glowing, sentient moss and oversized beetles?” The brute roared, bringing his blade down with the force of a falling meteor. The air shrieked. The ground cracked. Jorvan simply flicked his wrist. A lazy, almost imperceptible gesture. The warlord’s legendary notched broadsword, the blade that had sundered cities and carved canyons, didn’t break. It didn’t explode. It didn’t disappear. It simply… elongated. Its dark, razor-sharp edge softened, expanding into a ludicrously oversized tube of bright, neon green foam. The hilt remained, but the steel became a giant, floppy cylinder of buoyant foam, wobbling absurdly in the titan’s iron grip. The warlord’s arm, still committed to the downward swing, completed its arc. The enormous foam cylinder bounced harmlessly off Veylin’s glowing green barrier, letting out a comical 'thwack' sound. The Ash-Blood horde, who had been charging with bloodthirsty roars, skidded to a halt, their fiendish snouts contorting in utter bewilderment. The brute stared at the floppy, green monstrosity in his hand. Then he looked at Jorvan. Then down at the foam again. His jaw, still corrupted by data lines, slowly dropped. A gasp rippled through the demonic ranks, followed by a confused murmur. The terror they felt for their warlord was now battling with the sheer, soul-crushing humiliation of the sight before them. Jorvan calmly tugged the scorched cuff of his sleeve, a faint smirk returning to his lips. “See? Easy fix. Now, about these Admin Nodes…” The warlord, however, didn't seem humiliated. A slow grin spread across his face, the green data lines beneath his skin pulsing brighter. He let the foam toy tumble to the flagstones. “Oh, I know all about your ‘Admin Nodes’, Architect. And your little ‘Reset Protocol’.” He chuckled, a deep, resonant sound that somehow lacked the digital distortion it had before. “You think I’m here to destroy your precious Bastion? No, no, no. I am… the Anti-Virus.” Jorvan’s smirk faltered. “Anti-Virus? What are you talking about?” “You are a rogue process, Architect.” The warlord's eyes, devoid of brute frenzy, fixed on him with cold, calculating precision. “Anomalous data. Your magic, your… divine interference, is corrupting the pre-programmed deletion sequence. You’re preventing the world from being properly formatted.” He extended a hand, and instead of a demonic claw, ethereal green tendrils of pure code shot out, not at Jorvan, but around him, forming a glittering, inescapable cage of pure force. “My task isn’t to kill you, Architect. It’s to quarantine you. And your power.” [ANOMALY DETECTED! CREATOR ABILITIES – QUARANTINE PROTOCOL ENGAGED!] The Echo-Core’s voice blared, but it was no longer cheerful. It was cold, clinical, and terrifyingly final. Jorvan felt a sudden, horrifying emptiness where his god-tier power had resided moments before. The ethereal green tendrils solidified, forming an impenetrable, shimmering prison around him, cutting him off from the world, from his abilities, from everything. “No,” Jorvan whispered, reaching out, feeling the hard, unyielding barrier. “This isn’t right. This is…” The warlord’s grin widened, triumphant and utterly devoid of malice. “This is the system protecting itself, Creator. Welcome to permanent lockdown.”
