Chapter 7 of 10
The Anti-Cheat Ascent
1.0k words
The void outside the Spire’s hull held no atmosphere, only raw data—a maelstrom of unrendered geometry and flickering debug lines. The beast, now a leviathan of scaled bulk, bored upward like an artillery shell, its roar peeling back the texture maps of Zhalmora itself. Shreds of skybox streamed past Jevro’s face as the reptile climbed. The instant they breached, the system shrieked.
[WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED SKYBOX BREACH. IMMINENT ENTITY INTERCEPTION.]
[WARNING: ANTI-CHEAT PROTOCOL: SERAPHIM ASCENSION INITIATED.]
Ghostly, six-winged figures, forged from pure code and shimmering with an ethereal azure light, materialized around them. Their forms were skeletal, their movements hyper-precise, and each carried a blade of pure deletion. They converged, dozens of them, blocking their path upwards.
“They’re Enforcers!” Vashni shouted over the wind, his voice strained. He clung to the mount's neck plates, his armor already rattling with the violence of the ascent. “Manuals say they only spawn if a player clips into the Dev-Null zones outside the map! They have infinite true damage, bypassing all defenses!”
“Infinite damage is still just one type of damage,” Jevro muttered, his eyes narrowed. He could feel the vibrations, the silent song of their code, a discordant hum against the world’s frantic tempo. “Vashni, what’s their hit-box like? Weak points?”
“Hit-box is pure collision data, no weak points! Their blades are hardcoded to vaporize anything they touch!” Vashni yelled back, then inhaled sharply as a thought hit. “Wait! System rules dictate they prioritize high-value targets, high-tier artifacts! It’s how the engine intercepts item duplication glitches!”
Without hesitation, Vashni began ripping off his own armor. The gilded pauldrons, the engraved chest plate of the ‘Aegis of the Sun-Kin’—each piece was a legendary artifact, a reward from a guild raid he’d spent months coordinating. He threw them one by one into the data storm, each gleaming piece of gear a lure. The winged wardens, true to code, veered, their ethereal forms momentarily pulled astray as they converged on the falling loot, trying to erase the ‘glitched’ items.
[ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: BAIT & SWITCH. WORLD RECORD.]
[CODE MALFORMATION: ITEM VALUE REDIRECTION DETECTED. SEVERITY: MINOR.]
“You just trashed months of grinding!” Jevro yelled, a grin splitting his face. “You’re embracing the glitch, Vashni!”
“Rules are for a world that exists!” Vashni roared, now bare-chested and wild-eyed, his last gauntlet sailing into the digital abyss. “This is survival! What next?!”
The mount banked hard, dodging an airborne warden that sliced through the space where its wing had been. The sudden maneuver nearly dislodged Xilma, who gasped, her lithe Sylph-elf body sliding precariously down the scaled flank. Jevro, still holding Neshka’s cocooned form, shifted, his arm shooting out to snag Xilma by the waist, pulling her back against him with surprising force. Her bare arm was ice against his leather sleeve as their gazes locked.
“Don’t you dare let me go!” Xilma’s voice, usually laced with haughty disdain, was raw, a desperate plea. “Never!”
“Not a chance,” Jevro replied, tightening his grip. Her unsteady voice anchored his focus. He focused back on the threat. “Vashni, patterns! Give me their spawn timers, their movement vectors!”
Vashni, now fully committed, became a walking encyclopedia of anti-cheat data. “They spawn in clusters of three, every 4.7 seconds, from the 2, 6, and 10 o’clock positions relative to our ascent! Their initial vector is a direct intercept, then a short-range pursuit pattern Beta-7!”
“Neshka,” Jevro murmured, leaning his head close to the bundled cloak, “can you hear me? I need you to hum. A high, steady note, then drop it a full octave, then back up. Think of it like a three-step scale, but fast. Can you do that?”
From within the cloak, a faint, pure sound emerged, a fragile, beautiful melody that seemed to ripple through the corrupted data around them. As the first cluster materialized, Neshka’s hum shifted, hitting the exact resonant frequency Jevro needed. The wardens, instead of intercepting, blinked, their forms stuttering as collision boxes failed to register the drake. They phased harmlessly *through* the scales, dissolving into static before reforming behind them.
[ALERT: ENTITY COLLISION AVOIDANCE DETECTED. CODE INCONSISTENCY.]
[NOTICE: UNAUTHORIZED SKYBOX BREACH. SEVERITY: EXTREME. CONTINUED ASCENSION WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE CATASTROPHIC FAILURE.]
[CODE MALFORMATION: SERAPHIM HIT-BOX NULLIFICATION. SEVERITY: MAJOR.]
“Again! Higher!” Jevro commanded, feeling the tremor in the mount's massive frame. The beast flagged, its scales flickering, its pupils diluting. Neshka’s healing magic, a faint green pulse barely visible through the cloak, worked erratically to stabilize the beast’s stamina. “The drake is running on fumes! Push!”
Another wave of enforcers appeared, followed by a new system prompt.
[CRITICAL ERROR: GAME WORLD INTEGRITY COMPROMISED. FORCING WORLD REBOOT IN 0:02:17.]
“They’re rebooting the world! We’re almost out of time!” Jevro roared. He saw the shimmering, distorted ceiling of the Spire’s highest peak, the fabled high sanctum, just above them. It was a kaleidoscope of ancient, stained-glass panels, depicting the forgotten gods of Zhalmora.
“Now!” Jevro urged, slamming his palm against the crest scales. “Last burst!”
The beast bellowed, a final guttural cry, and surged upward as a living drill of scales and raw data. They shattered the stained-glass roof with an ear-splitting crash, showering the opulent chamber in glittering crystal fragments and corrupted code. They landed hard, sliding across the polished marble floor, scattering debris.
Jevro coughed, the familiar taste of blood in his mouth. The drake, exhausted, shrank rapidly, curling into its puppy-sized form, its scales dull. Neshka’s cloak was still intact, but her hum had faded to an almost inaudible whisper. Xilma scrambled to her feet, sword drawn, Vashni braced, his bare fists clenched.
The sanctum, the supposed pinnacle of Zhalmora, was silent. No grand boss entrance, no epic battle music. The colossal throne, carved from obsidian and wreathed in ancient, unlit runes, was occupied. Not by the legendary Arch-Lich Valerion, the final boss. But by Tarsian. He was slouched casually, one leg hooked over the armrest, a smirk on his face, the World-Eater Egg, now fully hatched, resting in his lap. Beside him, on a pedestal, sat the fabled 'Crown of Aethel', the final, most powerful loot drop, already plundered.
