Chapter 6 of 10

Unarmed and Unhinged

919 words

Jevro’s hand closed on empty air, fingers clenching against cold space. The polished metal, the worn grip, the subtle hum – all gone. Neshka, a collapsing storm of static, barely held together by the frayed edges of reality, lifted a disintegrating hand towards him. “Jevro… your… song…” Her voice rasped like grinding gravel, each syllable a struggle against total dereferencing. He stared at her, then at Tarsian, whose sneer widened, enjoying the sight of the legend stripped bare. The developer’s ‘Moderator Privileges’ icon pulsed with malevolent glee. Jevro’s mind raced, a frantic algorithm processing possibilities, discarding them, pushing further. His illness. The constant tremor in his bones, the dry cough, the systemic instability that had marked his prologue existence. It wasn't a flaw. It was a feature. A constant, low-level vibration. He wasn’t wielding the frequency. He *was* the frequency. The fork had merely been an amplifier, a focal point, a crutch for a power he already possessed but couldn’t perceive. His gaze snapped back to Tarsian. The modder had already begun the purge sequence for Jevro, a glowing, dark-blue glyph coalescing above his outstretched hand to expunge the rogue actor from Zhalmora. Jevro lifted his right hand. Not to block, not to beg. He held his index finger and thumb together, pressed them with impossible force, then snapped them apart. The sound wasn't a *click*. It was a *crack*, sharp and violent, like a sapling splintering under an axe blow. The air around him warped, distorting, then *burst*. [SYSTEM ALERT: Unforeseen Kinetic Event Detected. It slammed into Tarsian’s chest. The ‘Moderator Privileges’ icon flared, its protective barrier flashing into existence, then *shattered*. Glass shrapnel, made of pure light, exploded outwards, showering the developer in glittering shards. Tarsian stumbled back, boots skidding across cracked tiles as his smirk vanished. “What in the…?! That’s a physics exploit! You don’t have an item!” The dark-blue purge glyph, targeted on Jevro's coordinates, spiraled toward him. Before it could connect, an emerald streak launched from his collar. The hatchling expanded in mid-air, growing, stretching, scales hardening into thick plates. The reptile unhinged its jaw, impossibly wide, and *devoured* the raw hex string. [SYSTEM ALERT: Exotic Data Ingestion Detected. Entity 'Nibbles' Undergoing Unscheduled Evolutionary Phase.] The beast swallowed the hex string down into its core. Leathery wings unfurled wide, snout elongating into a spiked wedge, amber pupils slitting with sharp intent. It landed with a bone-jarring thud, now bulked out to the mass of a war hound. The beast shuddered, ribcage expanding, then spewed a thick sludge of corrupted bytecode. The digital bile, smeared with the fragmented detritus of Tarsian’s administrative commands, struck the caster squarely. It encased him in a flickering lattice of bad pointers. The caster seized, limbs locking up as his render thread choked on an unhandled exception. “Jevro!” Xilma dropped beside him on light feet, daggers drawn. Behind her, Vashni sprinted across the flagging, brass gauntlets humming with stored kinetic charge. “The Spire is collapsing!” Vashni yelled, gesturing upwards. The entire structure shuddered, dust raining down from the tiers above. A new Architect Prompt flared into view, overwriting the 29-day timer. [SERVER WIPE IMMINENT: Zhalmora System Integrity Critical. Hard Reset in 00:03:00.00. Good Luck.] “Three minutes?!” Xilma yelled. “That’s not even enough time to argue!” “Neshka,” Jevro gasped, looking at the healer. She was fading fast, her form less and less substantial. “Xilma, your cloak! The high-tier one! Can it localize a spatial bubble?” Xilma unclasped the heavy, silver-woven mantle from around her neck. Jevro took the enchanted silk and wrapped it tight over Neshka's failing wireframe. The tearing geometry paused, locked its coordinate bounds, and stabilized into a translucent, protective cocoon. [SYSTEM ALERT: Localized Instance Bubble Detected. Entity 'Neshka' Integrity Stabilized at 17.3% for 00:03:00.00.] “Drag Tarsian through the portal!” Jevro barked, watching the masonry split above. “We lose his admin bypasses if his profile drops to zero.” Vashni nodded once. “Understood.” He hoisted the paralyzed player across his back. Xilma cleared the falling masonry ahead of them with a focused gale blast. “Three minutes, Jevro!” Xilma shouted back while hauling the frozen modder toward a newly spawned exit rift. “What’s the plan? The lift shafts are wrecked!” Jevro looked up. The sky-oceans, once a distant majestic canvas, now felt terrifyingly close, the entire Spire groaning, ready to tear itself apart. A spiraling vortex of dark code swirled at the highest point, a maw ready to swallow their reality. The anti-cheat kill volume, an invisible boundary of infinite true damage, was hardcoded to vaporize anyone bypassing the outer walls. But the drake ate geometry buffers. He met the drake's slitted stare. The dragon snorted, venting exhaust smoke through razor teeth, perfectly aligned with the vector. “Hold on, Neshka,” Jevro murmured, pinning her cocooned frame securely against his chest as he vaulted onto the scaled spine. The floor gave way beneath them, splitting into white voids. There were only two paths left: the agonizingly slow, crumbling internal structure of the Spire, or the direct, suicidal ascent up its outer hull, straight through the anti-cheat. He had to be out of his mind. “Punch through the ceiling,” Jevro told the mount, gripping the horn plates along its neck. “Time to go out of bounds.” The dragon bellowed, a noise rattling the tower’s load-bearing pillars, and rocketed upward directly at the lethal kill volume and the tearing fabric of reality.
