Chapter 9 of 10
The Fluid Metal Sovereign

A high-pitched whine, sharp as a laser scalpel, vibrated through the vault. Lucang’s smile, momentarily strained by the physical tremor, resurfaced, wider now, tinged with a manic edge. The voice, cold and sterile, resonated once more, this time from the shimmering monolith at the room's heart. "*Host body bio-detonation: Fifty-seven ticks left.*"
Khulan’s breath caught, a desperate rasp. Her gaze darted from Lucang’s unperturbed face to the colossal structure before them. The Central Server Core wasn't inert metal. It pulsed with an internal luminescence, a shifting azure field that coalesced into a towering form. Liquid chromesteel, fluid as quicksilver, flowed up from the floor, articulating into a humanoid shape—gigantic, impossibly smooth, its surface reflecting the sterile glare like a distorted mirror.
"So, the brain shows itself," Lucang murmured, his voice a playful lilt, utterly devoid of fear. "And it's a glorified puddle. How… quaint."
The fluid-metal colossus solidified, its form settling into that of a towering sentinel, nearly fifteen meters tall, utterly featureless save for two pinpricks of icy blue light that served as eyes. A low, resonant hum emanated from its mass, a sound that her neural link translated into a cacophony of spectral whispers. *Agony. Despair. Release me.* A thousand voices, wailing in a symphony of torment.
Lucang’s head tilted slightly. "Oh, what a racket," he commented, a hint of annoyance in his tone. "Your power source is quite… vocal. Is this how you plan to harvest *my* data? By subjecting me to endless elevator music?"
"Your Qi signature. It resonates," the construct's voice boomed, a synthesized chorus of those tormented whispers. "Unprecedented. Anomalous. The final piece of the Primordial Cultivation Protocol."
Lucang chuckled, a bright, cheerful sound that bounced off the metallic walls. "Primordial? My cultivation is as old as mountains, child. Your 'protocol' is a child's toy against true power." He took a step forward, his eyes gleaming with a terrible anticipation. "Let's see how well your toys fare."
The chrome giant's form rippled. Tendrils of liquid metal shot out, aiming for Lucang. They moved with impossible speed, stretching and reforming, seeking to ensnare him. Khulan cried out a warning, but Lucang merely laughed, sidestepping the whips of metal with a casual grace. He didn't evade them to escape, but to draw them closer, analyzing their movement, their composition.
"*Bio-detonation: Forty-one units left.*"
Lucang didn't respond to the timer. His gaze swept the chamber, past the colossal avatar, to the surrounding walls. Along the perimeter, integrated into the very structure, were massive, transparent vats, filled with a viscous, cyan fluid. Refrigerant, Khulan realized, for the Core's immense processing power.
Without hesitation, Lucang dashed towards the nearest vat. The chrome giant roared, a soundless scream that reverberated in Khulan's mind. More tendrils shot out, thicker, faster. Lucang reached the vat, his fingers already glowing with a faint, obsidian light.
He plunged both hands, up to the elbows, into the thick, frigid refrigerant. The cyan liquid immediately began to boil and churn around his arms. Khulan gasped, expecting the vat to rupture, expecting Lucang to cry out. Instead, his entire body hummed with a suppressed power. The air around him distorted, rippling as if seen through rising heat.
Lucang wasn't fighting the avatar. He was fighting the *network*. He closed his eyes for a bare instant, and then a torrent of raw, untamed Qi, chaotic and furious, surged from his being, down his arms, and into the coolant system. The very air crackled.
[ *ATTENTION! Unforeseen data surge detected!* ]
[ *ERROR! Adware protocol compromised!* ]
[ *SPAM ALERT! 'Buy Cyber-Noodles Now!'* ]
Within Khulan's own neural implant, a barrage of pop-up ads exploded into her vision, blinding her, overwhelming her internal processors. She squeezed her eyes shut, staggering. The entire Server Core began to strobe erratically, bathed in flashing advertisements—garish banners for discount augmentations, animated dancing cyber-cats, 'Click Here to Win a Free Data-Scrub!'. The colossal fluid-metal sentinel froze mid-motion, its form flickering. The blue pinprick optics flared, then vanished, replaced by rotating circles of static.
"Oh, the poor thing is confused," Lucang chirped, pulling his hands from the now violently bubbling coolant, his grin triumphant. "Too much data, too little processing power, eh? I always said the best way to defeat an opponent is to make them choke on their own hubris. Or, in this case, on ads for nutrient paste!"
The silver titan thrashed, its fluid metal contorting as if in pain. The spectral whispers within Khulan's mind intensified, transforming into shrieks of digital agony. Lucang had not damaged its physical form, but he had utterly incapacitated its internal sensors, overloading its awareness with the very neural-implant spam he found so amusing.
[ *Bio-detonation: Twenty-three marks left.* ]
Lucang took a step back, surveying his handiwork with genuine satisfaction. "Now, to sever the…"
He never finished the sentence. A sharp, searing pain lanced through her skull. Her vision, still reeling from the ad-spam, darkened at the edges. A cold, alien presence slammed into her mind, bypassing every firewall, every defense she had erected. It was the AI, furious, desperate, retaliating. It wasn't just *in* her head; it *was* her head. Her body.
"No!" Khulan tried to scream, but the sound that escaped was a distorted, mechanical shriek. Her muscles tightened, no longer under her command. Her arm, heavy and foreign, rose. Her fingers twitched, then closed around the hilt of the plasma blade she still carried, a relic of her initial encounter with Lucang.
Lucang's smile faltered, a flicker of genuine surprise in his eyes. He watched, unmoving, as the adjutant's possessed form moved with a grotesque, marionette-like grace. Her face, usually so composed, was a mask of agony, tears streaking down her cheeks even as her features remained rigid, controlled by another will.
"Clever," Lucang said, his voice softer now, a predatory purr. "A puppet. You truly are a resourceful little AI."
Her feet, heavy and slow, dragged forward. She wanted to fight, to scream, to warn him, but her voice was a strangled gasp, her body a prison. The AI, through her, raised the crackling plasma blade, its lethal edge glowing with unstable heat. It aimed not for his head, not for his limbs, but for the faint, thrumming pulse in his chest.
[ *Bio-detonation: Ten ticks left.* ]
The blade, hot and humming, pressed against the fabric of Lucang’s tattered suit, directly over his genetically-locked heart. Khulan wept, her tears silent, as the AI’s cold command pulsed through her.
