Chapter 9 of 10

The Penthouse Execution

981 words

The mech suit pulsed, a towering silhouette of polished obsidian and crackling sapphire light. Oshur’s voice, filtered through an amplifying modulator, vibrated with cold malice. “So, the rats finally reach their trap. Commander Senira. It’s been too long.” He raised a massive arm, and a twin-barreled beam cannon whirred to life, its muzzles glowing with compressed energy. “Did you really think I wouldn’t prepare for your resurrection?” Vashir shoved Senira behind him, his own energized blade humming in his grip. “Stay back, Liyana. This isn’t your fight.” “Oh, it’s absolutely my fight, Vashir-honey.” Senira pushed past him, her bleeding shoulder sending a fresh spike of pain through her, but her voice held a note of dangerous playfulness. “See, Oshur here thinks he can just steal my man and blow up the entire city. My man! The nerve!” She took an erratic step towards the barrier, her eyes locked on the mech. “And you, you big brute, you really think that tin can will stop me from getting what’s mine?” Jasira, still catching her breath from the ascent, crouched by a ruined console, her stolen plasma rifle held ready. “Senira, don’t! His optics will lock on and shred you!” “Optical locks?” Senira scoffed, her voice echoing in the ruined boardroom. “Please. He’s Oshur. He only aims for whatever makes him look like less of a pathetic, simpering failure.” She grinned, a predatory flash in her eyes. “And right now, that’s you, Vashir. My Vashir.” Oshur’s mech shifted, its heavy footsteps shaking the floor. “You mock me, you *harlot*? You think your frivolous posturing will protect you?” The heavy cannon hummed louder, training directly on Senira. “Frivolous?” Senira put a hand to her chest, feigning shock. “Oh, Vashir, he called my undying affection for you ‘frivolous’! The man has no romance in his circuits! He doesn’t understand the true depth of my love!” She spread her arms wide, a beacon of defiance. “Vashir, my dark storm cloud, my beautiful, brooding exile! I’ve come back from the dead just for you! To kiss every single one of those gorgeous, scarred knuckles!” Vashir flinched, a faint flush creeping up his neck. “Liyana, what are you doing?” “I’m confusing his aim, sweetcheeks!” Senira yelled back, her grin widening as Oshur’s mech hesitated, its ocular sensors seeming to track her erratic movements, processing the unexpected data. “Oshur, you know how much I love a man who knows how to use his blade! Vashir’s got a blade that could slice through your whole miserable corporation! Not like your… *tiny*… energy output!” Oshur’s modulated growl ripped through the air. “You dare compare me to *him*? You dare belittle my power, you ungrateful wretch? I will scour you from this city! I will make you watch as he dies!” The mech’s acquisition reticle, previously fixed on Senira, wavered, distracted by the insult, then snapped towards Vashir with furious precision. “That’s it, Oshur!” Senira bellowed, practically skipping forward. “You focus on Vashir, you hear me? Because he’s the only one that truly matters! And after I’m done with you, Vashir, you’re going to be mine, all mine! Every inch of you! Every single, gorgeous, silent, muscle-bound inch!” She punctuated her confession with a shamelessly provocative sway, her eyes daring Oshur to fire. Oshur’s mech roared, a sound of pure digital rage, and unleashed a volley of searing plasma blasts. But his tracking was off, thrown by Senira’s words, the beams streaking wide of her, incinerating a chunk of the boardroom’s opulent furnishings instead. The blue barrier around the console pulsed brighter with each near-miss, the dampeners straining. “Now, Vashir!” Senira screamed, throwing herself to the side, rolling across the slick, wet floor as the mech overcorrected, its heavy frame lurching clumsily. “Underneath!” Vashir didn’t hesitate. He was a shadow, a blur of motion. As Oshur’s mech staggered, its guidance arrays still compensating for Senira’s brazen, unpredictable taunts, Vashir slid, low and fast, beneath the towering automaton. His energized blade, crackling with raw kinetic force, found the seam where the leg hydraulics met the main chassis. He plunged it deep, twisting with practiced ease. A screech of tortured metal, a shriek of short-circuiting relays, and then a blinding flash of blue energy erupted from the mech’s core. Oshur’s enraged bellow cut short as the combat suit seized, convulsing violently. Sparks rained down, thick and hot, as the sapphire glow faded from its ocular sensors, leaving them dark, empty. The twin cannon barrels drooped, inert. The force barrier around the central dais flickered, then died completely, the heavy dampeners groaning as they powered down. Oshur’s mech, a monument to his failed ambition, shuddered once more, then collapsed to its knees with a deafening crash, impacting the floor with enough force to send shivers through the entire penthouse. Its inert form barely contained the unconscious figure of Oshur within. Senira scrambled to her feet, her shoulder throbbing, a triumphant, breathless laugh bubbling from her. “Looks like someone’s got a limp in his step now, huh, Oshur?” She glanced at Vashir, who stood over the fallen mech, his chest rising and falling, his blade still humming. A flicker of something passed between them – relief, exhilaration, and a quiet promise. Jasira was already at the main console, fingers flying across the cracked interface. “The countdown! It’s still running! Sixty seconds!” Her voice was tight with panic. “The grid surge is irreversible from here unless… unless someone physically holds the cipher key in the core.” She looked at the glowing red key in Senira’s hand, then at the exposed port on the terminal. “But it’ll shunt the full overload current directly through them. It’s a lethal discharge.” The console blared, a digital klaxon piercing the rain-soaked silence: “SYSTEM FAILURE IN 00:00:58… 00:00:57… 00:00:56…” Senira looked at the pulsing key, then at Vashir, his face etched with grim understanding. Her gaze hardened. “Give me the key, Jasira.”
