Brazen Humiliations
1.0k words
“My dearest fiancée,” Oshur drawled, his voice echoing with chilling finality. “Did you truly believe you could escape me?”
Rain lashed through the gaping doorway, outlining his perfect, tailored silhouette against the tumultuous Qartal night. Beyond him, the muted glow of distant neon towers pulsed, oblivious to the quiet apocalypse he held in his palm. His escort, a squad of six elite enforcers clad in matte black plating, fanned out behind him, their carbines humming with suppressed energy. One of them, a hulking figure with a chipped faceplate, advanced a step, a heavy vibro-axe held ready.
Senira looked at Oshur, then at the trigger unit, then at the enforcers, then back at Oshur’s perfectly coiffed hair. And then, a sound ripped from her throat. Not a sob, not a gasp, but a sharp, utterly undignified snort. It quickly escalated into a choked giggle, then a full-blown, hysterical peal of laughter. It was the kind of laughter that buckled her knees, forced tears from her eyes, and made her clutch her stomach. It was loud, shameless, and completely inappropriate.
“Oh, you,” she gasped, wiping at her eyes, her voice laced with mocking delight. “You really thought… *this* was a good reveal? With the rain and the dramatic lighting? It’s so… *tiny*.”
Oshur’s triumphant smirk faltered. “Tiny?” he repeated, his brow furrowing. “My detonator is a masterpiece of… ”
“No, not the trigger, you buffoon!” Senira wheezed, shaking her head, mockery sharpening the line of her mouth. She pitched toward him, unbalancing herself, then straightened with a theatrical flourish, hands on her hips. “Your *energy signature*! It’s like a flickering candle in a hurricane! All this effort, all this planning, for a man whose presence is barely a whisper in the static!”
Her words, dripping with scornful humor, struck Oshur like a physical blow. His face, usually a mask of suave arrogance, twisted into a furious snarl. The guards, momentarily taken aback by Liyana’s bizarre outburst, exchanged confused glances. This was not the cowering victim they had been briefed on.
“You insolent fool!” Oshur roared, his face purpling. “Do you have any idea who you’re speaking to? I am Oshur Veld, scion of the Veld Conglomerate, soon to be the undisputed master of Qartal! And you, my dear, are about to become a very, very public example!” He gestured sharply to the vibro-axe wielding vanguard. “Bring her to me. Unharmed, for now. I want her to watch him suffer.”
The hulking brute lunged, his axe humming, optics tracking her throat. Senira merely rolled her eyes with practiced languor. Vashir moved, shifting his weight across the wet aggregate. He stepped in front of Senira, shielding her with his body, his stance wide and unyielding.
“You lay a hand on her,” Vashir’s voice rumbled, low and dangerous, “and I will break every bone in your body.”
The vanguard paused, caught off balance by Vashir’s sudden bulk. His weapon still hummed, ready. But before he could reset his stance, Senira sidestepped Vashir, her posture snapping rigid.
As the man swung his axe in a wide, arcing strike, Senira ducked low and slipped under the blade. Her right hand lashed out, not with a precise discharge, but with a brazen, open-handed slap against his ceramic cuisse. It wasn’t meant to injure, but to create a momentary disruption. The man, thrown off balance by the bizarre impact and the sheer audacity of it, stumbled.
That was Vashir’s cue. As the man faltered, Vashir drove into him. He carried no weapon; instead, he caught the vanguard's wrist, using the man's own momentum to twist the arm back. A sharp wrench cracked the articulated forearm casing, loosening the grip. The vibro-axe clattered to the floor, its hum dying.
Before the man could recover, Vashir driven a knee into the lower rim of his visor, snapping his neck back. Then, shifting his footing on the wet tiles, he hoisted the deadweight by collar and belt, hurling him into the two riflemen advancing from the left.
Plates clattered together with a deafening ring, bowling the pair flat. Senira, meanwhile, darted past the tangle of limbs toward the two remaining marksmen as they brought their barrels level.
“Oh, no you don’t!” she chirped, a deceptive lightness in her tone. With an impossible burst of speed, she closed the distance, not engaging directly, but using her electro-kinetic abilities to create a rapid-fire series of focused short-circuits. Not on their armor, but on the delicate targeting systems of their rifles. A series of sharp, crackling *zaps* filled the air. The barrels sputtered, their energy cells venting hot ozone before dropping dark and inert.
Disarmed and disoriented, the pair barely had time to react before Vashir closed the distance. He moved with a brutal, efficient grace, a phantom in the chaotic rain-slicked den. One moment, he was striking with concussive force, the next, he was expertly dislocating a joint, rendering a limb useless. The syndicate retainers, trained for firing lines and perimeter sweeps, crumbled against their brutal close-quarters coordination.
Within seconds, all six guards lay groaning amidst the debris, their composite plate cracked and their weapons smoking. None were dead, but all were thoroughly incapacitated.
Oshur stood frozen in the doorway, the master console trembling in his grip, sweat cutting lines through the cosmetic powder on his cheeks. He stared at his broken guards, then at Vashir and Senira, who stood side-by-side, their breathing steady, a terrifying calm about them. The rain streamed down, blurring the neon lights of Qartal behind him.
“Impossible,” he whispered, a thin, reedy sound against the storm. “They’re just… Liyana… and an exiled brute!”
Senira smirked, a genuine, predatory smile that belonged to the woman she once was. “Oh, darling, you should really update your intelligence. We’re far more than that.”
Vashir closed the space between them, his knuckles smeared with hydraulic grease. “This ends now, Oshur. Surrender.”
But Oshur, cornered and desperate, saw only ruin. His gaze dropped to the trigger casing in his palm, frantic and feral. With a guttural scream of pure rage and defeat, he slammed his palm down onto the device’s central console, triggering a blaring red countdown that flashed across the screen: *30:00. City Grid Detonation Imminent*.
