Chapter 7: The Golden Cage Open

1.6k words

Blinding white light pierced my retinas, turning the world into a dizzying blur of flashing cameras and shouting voices. Strong hands gripped my elbows, pulling me out of the freezing wind before I could even register who had grabbed me. Broad shoulders clad in black tactical gear formed a physical wall between my trembling body and the swarming paparazzi. "Step inside, please," a deep, muffled voice commanded. Metal clicked, a heavy sliding door opened, and I was gently pushed into the dark, plush interior of a massive armored vehicle. Silence fell like a heavy curtain as the door slammed shut, instantly muting the chaotic roar of the streets. Gasping for breath, I clutched my chest, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. "Take a deep breath," a remarkably gentle voice murmured from the shadows of the cabin. My eyes adjusted slowly to the dim, warm amber lighting of the luxury van. Rich cedarwood and expensive clean linen scents filled the enclosed space, a stark contrast to the cold, exhaust-fume-choked air of the alleyway I had just escaped. Tinted windows completely blocked out the flashing bulbs of the cameras, though I could still see the distorted silhouettes of reporters hitting the reinforced glass before the vehicle accelerated away. Two men sat across from me on the leather bench seats, their presence instantly commanding the entire space. Kim Seokjin, wearing a simple but style-conscious black cashmere sweater, was looking at me with a mixture of intense worry and soft sympathy. Beside him sat Park Jimin, his blond hair slightly disheveled, his sharp eyes scanning my face with quiet, calculating intensity. Both of them looked completely different from their onstage personas—more grounded, yet somehow even more intimidating in their raw, human perfection. "Here," Jin said softly, reaching toward a small built-in console. Soft, heavy fabric was draped over my shoulders. Realizing it was a genuine silk blanket, I tried to pull back, but Jin insisted, tucking the edges around my shivering frame. Steaming hot chamomile tea was pressed into my hands next, the warmth of the porcelain mug stinging my cold, numb palms. My fingers shook so violently that the liquid sloshed over the rim, hot droplets landing on my worn, faded jeans. Shame washed over me, hot and suffocating. How could I look like such a disaster in front of these global icons? Growing up, I had always been the invisible child. My parents had been too busy with their own volatile, failing marriage to notice when I brought home top grades or when I sat alone in my room for days. Avoidance was my survival mechanism. If you don't let anyone get close, they can't leave you behind. Now, the universe had decided to bind my soul to a man who was constantly surrounded by millions of people, a man whose very existence was a public spectacle. It felt like a cruel joke. Every insecurity I had ever harbored came rushing to the surface, a crushing tide of self-doubt. "Thank you," I whispered, my voice cracking as I stared down at the tea, unable to meet their eyes. My mind raced with humiliating thoughts, analyzing my own flaws with brutal precision. Seokjin and Jimin were probably looking at me and wondering what their brilliant, museum-loving leader could possibly see in someone so utterly ordinary. "We were worried we wouldn’t reach you in time," Jin said, his voice laced with genuine relief. Panic flared in my chest at his words, my heart taking another erratic leap. "Is... is Namjoon okay?" I asked, the name tasting heavy and foreign on my tongue, despite the fact that it was literally branded onto my flesh. Jimin didn't answer immediately. His gaze drifted down to my bandaged wrist, where the thick layers of medical tape hid the elegant script of Namjoon's name. For a long moment, the only sound in the vehicle was the low hum of the powerful engine as we sped through the Seoul streets. Underneath my fear, a deep sense of dread settled into my stomach. Constant scrutiny made me feel like an insect under a microscope, and I shrank further into the massive leather seat. "I'm sorry," I blurted out, the words escaping before I could stop them. Seokjin’s eyebrows knitted together in confusion. "Why are you apologizing?" he asked, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees. His handsome face was etched with a kindness that almost made me want to cry. Tears pricked the corners of my eyes, but I blinked them back fiercely, refusing to break down. "Because of this," I gestured vaguely to myself, to the chaotic circus outside, to the fact that I had just been smuggled out of my own apartment building in a laundry cart. "I shouldn't be the one he is fated to," I whispered, the painful truth finally slipping past my lips. "Namjoon deserves someone... someone who can handle this, someone who matches his stature." "You think you aren't enough for him?" Jimin asked, his voice soft but carrying a sharp edge of curiosity. "I am an art restorer," I said, looking down at my hands. "I work in the dark, in dusty basements, fixing broken things that other people have ruined. I don't belong in the light." "Namjoon loves the dark," Jin countered gently, a small, sad smile playing on his lips. "He loves the quiet, the broken, the things that require patience to understand." "But he is also Kim Namjoon," I argued, my voice growing desperate. "He belongs to the world. I can't live like this, being hunted by cameras, being judged by millions of strangers." "We understand that more than anyone," Jimin said, his posture relaxing slightly as he leaned back. "But the bond doesn't care about fame, Y/N." "This bond is a mistake," I whispered, clutching the warm mug tighter. "Don't say that," Jin said, his tone suddenly turning remarkably serious. "Not until you see him." "Is he really that upset?" I asked, my heart clenching with a strange, heavy ache. "Upset doesn't even begin to describe it," Jin sighed, rubbing his temples as if a headache was blooming there. "He has been like a caged predator," Jimin added, his eyes locked onto mine. "When the mark appeared, it was like a switch flipped inside him." "We've never seen him like this," Jin admitted, looking out the tinted window at the passing city lights. "He’s always the calm one, the leader who holds us together, but right now..." "He locked himself in his studio for three days," Jin said, his voice dropping to a low murmur. "He wouldn't let any of us in." "We could hear him pacing, throwing things, muttering to himself," Jimin added, his tone somber. "When he finally came out to get water, he looked like a ghost," Jin continued. "His eyes were bloodshot, and he was clutching his chest right where his heart is. He told us he could feel you crying. He could feel your absolute terror, and it was driving him insane because he couldn't reach you to comfort you." Knowing that my own fear was physically hurting someone else—someone I didn't even know, yet was cosmically tied to—felt incredibly terrifying. Looking down at my bandaged wrist, I could feel the skin beneath the white gauze pulsing in time with my rapid heartbeat. "Right now, he is losing his mind," Jimin finished, his voice dropping an octave. "I didn't mean to hurt him," I said, a wave of intense guilt washing over me. "I was just so scared." "We know you were scared," Jin said, reaching out to gently pat my knee. "But running from a soulmate... it does things to a man's mind, especially someone as intense as Namjoon." "He felt your panic through the bond," Jimin explained, his gaze unwavering. "Every time you ran, every time you hid, he felt it like a physical blow." "Is that why you found me?" I asked, looking between the two of them. "We had to," Jin said simply. "HYBE's security team has been tracking the media coverage, and when we saw the reporters swarming your building, we knew we had to get you out." "This van is armored," Jimin noted, gesturing to the thick reinforced walls. "No one can see inside, and no one can stop us. You are safe here." "Safe," I repeated, the word tasting bitter. "It feels like a cage." "A golden cage, perhaps," Jimin murmured, a flicker of amusement in his eyes, though it quickly faded. "But a necessary one." "Where are we going?" I asked, looking out the dark window. "To his private residence," Jin replied. "Away from the agency, away from the dorms. Somewhere quiet where you two can actually talk." "I don't know what to say to him," I admitted, my voice barely a whisper. "What if he looks at me and regrets it?" "He won't," Jin said with absolute certainty. "Trust me on this, Y/N. Namjoon is already completely gone for you." "You don't understand how much he has been suffering," Jimin added, his expression turning solemn once more. "Why?" I asked, my chest tightening. "Why is he suffering so much?" "This soulmate bond isn't just a romantic fairy tale," Jin explained. "It's a biological pull. When one half rejects it, or runs away, the other half suffers physically." "My wrist... it burned," I admitted, remembering the searing heat that had kept me awake for nights. "For him, it's much worse," Jimin said, his voice dropping to a dangerous quiet. "He is the dominant match," Jin whispered. "His instinct to protect and claim you is fighting against your instinct to run. It's tearing him apart from the inside." "I didn't know," I whispered, tears finally escaping and tracking down my cheeks. "We aren't telling you this to make you feel guilty," Jin said quickly, offering me a soft tissue. "But you need to understand the reality of what you're walking into." "He isn't going to let you go," Jimin warned, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Not now. Not ever." "Is he... is he angry with me?" I asked, trembling. "No," Jin said. "He's desperate." "Desperate is an understatement," Jimin corrected, his gaze intensifying. "We are almost there," Jin announced, looking at the GPS screen on the dashboard. My hands began to sweat against the porcelain mug, and I set it down in the holder before I could drop it. Slowing down, the vehicle turned into a private, underground parking garage that was heavily guarded by security personnel. I swallowed hard, my throat feeling dry and tight. Jimin leans forward, his playful demeanor vanishing as he whispers, 'You need to know something before we arrive. Namjoon hasn't slept or eaten since his mark appeared—the bond is literally consuming him alive.'
