The Grand Staircase Sequence Break

Two tiny, intensely crimson eyes, still echoing Strahinja’s furious glare from moments before, blinked slowly, registering the indignity of its new existence. It floated a foot above the floor, its multiple tentacles flailing in miniature, impotent rage, bumping softly against the cavern’s rough-hewn stone. “Ugh, non-combat pets are always so dramatic,” Dragoš muttered, shaking his head. “Thought that contract would give me a mount, honestly. What a scam.” He gave the now-shrunken entity a light poke with his finger. The squid-thing recoiled with a surprisingly loud, gurgling squeak. Danica stared, her mind struggling to process the visual. One moment, planar annihilation, the next, a grumpy cephalopod. Strahinja, still pale and disoriented, stumbled back against the cavern wall, clutching his head. The oppressive, mind-flaying aura that had plagued them for days was gone, replaced by the faint, petulant scent of ozone and something akin to disgruntled ink. “Strahinja?” Danica breathed, stepping towards him, a tremor in her voice. His eyes, though still bloodshot, held a recognizable warmth, a human spark she hadn’t seen since before the wedding. He blinked, pushing himself upright, his gaze falling upon the hovering purple blob with a mix of horror and profound, weary relief. “It’s… quiet,” Strahinja whispered, his voice raspy. “The screaming… it’s gone.” He looked at Dragoš, then at Danica, a nascent gratitude in his gaze. “He… he actually did it.” Dragoš merely shrugged, already checking his sleek blue interface. [Server Shutdown: 5 Days, 11 Hours, 43 Minutes]. “Alright, good, no more distractions,” he announced, clapping his hands together. “We’ve lost enough time. Developer’s Room, top floor, let’s go. Time to find that server reset button before this beta test goes offline.” “Offline?” Danica echoed, but Dragoš was already striding towards the cavern exit, his eyes fixed on some unseen objective. The Silent Zmey, ever-present, melted out of the shadows, their eyes gleaming with renewed fervor, apparently unbothered by the purple squid now hovering dutifully behind Dragoš like an extremely cross, unwilling shadow. The winding tunnels gave way to familiar, damp corridors of the Blackwood Keep. Dragoš led them with an almost inhuman sense of direction, navigating forgotten passages and crumbling stairwells. The air grew colder, the scent of damp stone and ancient dust replaced by the metallic tang of blood and the faint, sickly-sweet perfume of wilting funeral lilies. They emerged into a vast, domed antechamber, the sheer scale of the place designed to inspire awe, or perhaps, dread. Before them, the Grand Flight of Oplenac climbed toward the ceiling, a masterpiece of carved black marble that spiraled into the mist-shrouded heights of the Keep. It was a dizzying climb, lined with the perpetually weeping statues of forgotten nobles and gargoyles whose stone eyes seemed to follow their every move. But the path was not clear. A formidable, impenetrable wall of bodies stood arrayed across the first landing. Armored figures, their plate glistening with corrupted sigils, formed a phalanx. Behind them, rows of crossbowmen stood ready, their bolts tipped with sickly green glow. These were no mere guards; they were the loyalists of the Oplenac Dukes, bolstered by the remaining fragments of the Ashen Vanguard. At the forefront, a man of immense girth and sneering features, Duke Volkhard, stood, adorned in robes of black velvet embroidered with platinum thread. He held a gleaming, serrated axe, its edge stained dark. A cruel smile stretched across his face as he spotted Dragoš. “The ‘Divine Trickster’ returns,” Volkhard boomed, his voice echoing off the arched ceiling. “Did you truly think you could escape the vengeance of the noble houses, peasant? The Vanguard may be shattered, but our resolve is not. This path to the Spire is sealed. You are trapped, groom. The master himself awaits your failure, and he has prepared a most… agonizing welcome for your insolence.” He gestured broadly at the assembled army. “Every step you take towards the Spire will be met with the full, unyielding might of Oplenac! Prepare to beg for mercy!” Danica felt a familiar dread coil in her gut. An entire army. How could they possibly break through? Strahinja, still weakened, instinctively reached for a weapon that wasn't there, his eyes scanning the overwhelming numbers. Dragoš, however, barely seemed to register the duke’s grandstanding. He ignored the snarling faces, the drawn bows, the bristling spears. His gaze was fixed, not on the blockade, but on the polished, angled handrail of the steps. It curved smoothly, offering a tantalizingly unbroken path skyward, high above the heads of the assembled army. “Huh. Looks like a terrain glitch,” Dragoš mused, a glint in his eye. He glanced around, spotting a discarded, ornate pewter serving platter, left askew on a nearby pedestal. He snatched it, testing its weight. “What are you doing?” Danica asked, her voice tight with apprehension. The Duke’s sneer widened, anticipating Dragoš’s foolish charge. “Hold on, this is gonna be quick,” Dragoš announced, taking a running start. Before anyone could react, he hopped the marble railing, landing deftly on the polished handrail, the serving tray held flat beneath his feet. He leaned forward, pushing off with one foot, and then, with a burst of impossible speed, he was gone. He wasn't running; he was *gliding*. The tray, seemingly frictionless, propelled him skyward along the rail's smooth curve. He shot past the first landing, a blur of motion, leaving the Duke and his army gaping in disbelief. The sound of his passage was a faint, exhilarating whoosh, like wind rushing through a narrow canyon. He bypassed the entire army in seconds, arms outstretched for balance, his face locked in delighted concentration. “Hey, you guys coming or what?” Dragoš called down from what felt like an impossible distance, already halfway up the spiraling ascent, his voice echoing back down the marble well. He gave a triumphant flourish with one hand. Duke Volkhard’s face purpled with rage. “What in the blazes—!? Stop him! Shoot him down!” The crossbowmen, stunned, fumbled with their weapons, but Dragoš was already too far, too fast. The Zmey, however, did not hesitate. Their leader, the stoic Kolar, observed their god’s maneuver with a single, knowing nod. They drew their long, curved scabbards, not their blades, and one by one, with silent, practiced precision, they too leaped onto the handrail, mimicking Dragoš’s stance. A line of grim-faced assassins, sliding upwards on their weapon sheaths, a ridiculous, unstoppable wave of silent, physics-defying worship. The purple squid, still grumbling, zipped after them, attempting to keep pace. Danica stared, then a laugh, breathless and disbelieving, escaped her lips. The sight of the fanatical assassins surfing the banister with deadpan expressions, while the Duke’s army roared in impotent fury, was beyond absurd. She found herself scrambling, pulling herself over the railing, a foolish grin on her face. She slid clumsily after them, using her boots, a sudden exhilaration warring with the lingering fear. Strahinja, still looking bewildered, followed. They reached the pinnacle of the grand ascent, leaving the entire, heavily armored blockade far below, shouting and scrambling in disarray. Dragoš landed lightly on the top floor, spinning the metal tray with a flourish. “See? Totally skipped that whole trash wave. Always look for the geometry skips, kids.” “That… that was incredible,” Danica said, still breathless, a flush on her cheeks. Blood rushed in her ears, carried by a strange, exhilarating triumph. Dragoš beamed. “Right? Maximum efficiency. Now, where’s that Dev Room entrance? Usually behind a fake wall or—” A tearing sound, like fabric ripping across dimensions, split the air. The very space before them warped and buckled, coalescing into a grotesque, towering form of shadow and raw void energy. The entity, no longer content with possession, stood revealed in its true, terrible glory—a multi-armed singularity avatar, its countless limbs tipped with razor-sharp tendrils, its central eye a swirling vortex of annihilation. It was the embodiment of stellar dread, far more terrifying than any gargoyle or Vanguard lord. The void-entity's voice, a chorus of screaming chasms, echoed directly in their minds. “You *dare*… insult my forces with such… *frivolity*! Your antics end here!” One of the singularity tendrils lashed out with impossible speed, a blur of pure destructive force. It struck Dragoš full-on, not with a crushing blow, but with a silent, annihilating impact that resonated through the very fabric of reality. The metal serving tray shattered into a thousand glittering shards. Dragoš’s body lurched, a sickening impact rippling through him. The sleek blue interface, visible only to him, flashed a stark, terrifying warning. [HP: 1%] [CRITICAL DAMAGE!] [WARNING! STATUS: NEAR DEATH!]
