Chapter 5 of 10
Patch Notes of Doom
881 words
Danica stared at the triangular artifact in Dragoš’s fingers, then at the lingering monstrous shadow behind Strahinja. Dragoš weighed the faceted prism in his palm, unbothered by the chill pouring from its edges. A faint hum vibrated through the subterranean vault, followed by a sharp chime ringing from empty air. Danica flinched, but Dragoš merely blinked.
[GM Access Token Acquired!]
[“Dev Key” Functionality Unlocked!]
[Server Maintenance Protocol: Phase 2 initiated!]
[Server Shutdown in: 5 Days, 23 Hours, 59 Minutes, 59 Seconds]
The blue interface flashed with an aggressive crimson border. Danica saw nothing of the panels, but the chill in the air bit down sharply. The shadow behind Strahinja convulsed, shredding into gray vapor that vanished against the ceiling. Strahinja dropped forward onto the limestone floor, motionless.
Dragoš scowled at the red numbers. “Five *days*? What kind of patch schedule is this? This isn't maintenance; it's a forced database purge! Someone pushed an emergency hotfix without patch notes!” He spun around, surveying the rock walls. “This isn’t a casual farming route anymore. It's a speedrun.”
A rumble shook the upper strata. The violet gloom filling the rift shifted, bleeding into dull copper and rust. Danica stared upward through the fissures. The skies of Zvergrad were failing, and the collapse was quickening.
“The upper tier,” Danica muttered, throat dry. “The light is turning copper above. I felt the atmospheric drop before we descended. It’s the curse, Dragoš. It is swallowing the provinces.”
Dragoš waved a dismissive hand. “Curse, shmurse. That’s just the ‘Endgame Apocalypse’ skybox filter kicking in. Terrible project management. They didn’t even post a proper countdown. Five days? That’s barely enough time to reach the Developer’s Room, loot the master chests, and maybe pocket a few named companion tags before the realm is wiped.” He kicked a luminous geode loose from the rubble. “This is why beta tests are atrocious. Rushed deadlines, broken scripts.”
His detachment now carried an impatient edge. He did not deny the impending ruin; he simply filed it under poor development choices. Danica drew a steady breath, torn between exasperation and grim relief. At least his priorities pointed toward survival.
“Developer’s Room?” she asked. “What sanctuary is that?”
“It’s where the root permissions live,” Dragoš explained, pacing across the stone. “Where the game masters drop debug items, bypass locked doors, and cancel shutdown routines. It’s always tucked into the highest coordinate of the zone mesh, behind three layers of bad geometry. For Oplenac Keep, that’s the Spire of Echoes, right at the summit.” He cracked his knuckles. “New plan. We climb. No detours, no stalling. Pure speedrun routing.”
Pitted ropes rattled down from the upper crevices. Masked figures slid down in unbroken silence, dropping into crouches around the pedestal: the Silent Zmey. Their captain knelt at Dragoš’s boots, tilting her blank mask upward.
“Lord of the Glitched Code,” the captain murmured through her veil. “Our perimeter scouts intercepted couriers from the outer courts. The houses of Borislav and Gvozden have formed a pact. They march their retainers toward the Spire of Echoes—the Iron Crows and the Shadow Wolves. They seek to encircle you amid the encroaching rot and take Oplenac for themselves.”
Dragoš squinted. “An ambush? Are they actually trying to initiate open-world PvP?” Dragoš scratched his jaw. “Fine. We run a battleground route. Time to distribute vanity loot.” He opened his invisible inventory grid, pulling bright bundles from thin air. “Here, Captain. Take this. The ‘Flaming Greatsword of the Eternal Sunrise.’ Zero combat stats, but the bloom effect is blinding. Maximize target confusion.”
The woman received the massive broadsword. It stood nine feet from pommel to tip, radiating harsh orange glare across the granite pillars. She balanced the absurd iron slab without a tremor. “As you command, Glorious Exploit.”
Dragoš continued, pulling out more ridiculous armaments. “For you, Radovan, the ‘Axe of Cosmic Radiance’! And for you, Radoslava, the ‘Shield of the Blazing Nova’! Everyone gets one! Let’s make this ambush look like a light show!”
The hollow erupted into neon pinks and radiant golds as the assassins strapped on oversized, scintillating skins. Shadows vanished under the garish illumination. Danica pressed two fingers against her brow; they were preparing to breach a noble blockade while wielding luminous display props.
“Do those blades even cut?” Danica asked, gesturing toward an assassin bracing a lance that shed blinding magenta sparks.
“They have top-tier particle effects, Danica! Psychological warfare,” Dragoš said, grinning. “Nobody charges a guy holding a radiant neon claymore without hesitating.” He offered her a crystalline wand that hissed harmless blue smoke. “Take a prop. We push to the Spire, access the terminal, and cancel the shutdown sequence. I've patched worse anomalies than this.”
The subterranean chamber shook before she could refuse. Granite fractured along the eastern wall, splitting open with the screech of grinding slate. Strahinja did not remain unconscious on the floor; his limbs lengthened, torso swelling to twice its natural width as blackich fluid erupted through his doublet. The skin across his face pulled taut over protruding mandible ridges, his irises burning in fractured crimson facets. The slumbering entity within him had seized the reins entirely.
The creature’s voice, a chorus of thunderous echoes that vibrated directly into Danica’s skull, boomed through the abyss, a chilling pronouncement of doom. “The Singularity demands silence!”
